Having a period with an IUD

I have had an IUD in for a year and 3 months and I still get my period. It may be very to the point where I only notice when I wipe and other times where I may need something for a day. But my gyno told me that she had one woman that had just come in before me for a check up and had hers stop after a year of having hers in. But for some woman their period doesn't stop until the second IUD is inserted (which is 5 years for the Mirana I got)

I have the mirena as well and my body was the same way once I hit the 6 month mark my periods slowed down to slim or nothing. The doctor told me most women have the effect but once you can make it past the 6 month mark you should be in the clear.

going on two years with the Mirena IUD and I love it! i get my period every 3 months for 3 days at a time... and its really light. the only thing that scares me is having rough sex. im scared its going to push through my uterus OR - having a tubial pregnancy... but other than that.. i've had really good luck with it.

I got the copper one 6 weeks after my Daughter was born and had long periods every couple of weeks, spotting between periods. Pain during sex and heavy spotting after, for about 3 days. My doctor kept telling me I would adjust, and that it would just take time. I finally had it removed after my daughters 2nd birthday. That was the best thing ever. I would never go back to an IUD and have warned all my friends who are thinking about getting one. They are not worth it. Good Luck.

When I got the IUD I was told that I may or may not get a period. I was in that percent that continued to get a period. I had the IUD for 2 years and got a regular period. I now have a norplant that is made with the same hormones of the IUD and was told that if i had a period with the marina i would get a period the norplant. I haven't had a period yet and its been 4 months.

well i have the i guess you can call it IUD i have the one in the arm but i started off with the shots and i havent had a period in like five years i guess birth control works different for some people.

I had my period for a month and a half after i got my IUD. I felt the same way but it went away for two months after and now i get it every month for 3-4 days. I hope that it will go away like when i had the Depo with time.

yeah but it stopped by the third period. But it is heaver and last longer which is a major pain!

i just got the mirena in january, had my first period in febuary it lasted about 3 weeks my period this month was two weeks late, so i totally understand your frustration.

I have had the Mirena IUD for about 3 years now...I do remember having weird long periods as well. My doctor said the same thing...its fine...I love and hate the IUD because I can only keep up with my cycle by dates and sometimes thats tricky because its sometimes spotting and then a heavier period then non at all....I love not having cramps though....It has worked in my favor for this long NO MORE BABIES...I love them to death but my cut off is at 2 kids which I have reached...before 30

i had the same problem and after a while it stopped i didn't have one at all. i am on my second round of IUD i had one took it out to have a baby and got another after that. the same thing has happened both times.

Yes! The doctor told me eventually my period would go away all together but I still have a very light one every month. I've had mirena for almost 2 years now. It works well but the first 6 months were very annoying.

Everyone is definately different but I had mirena put in about two months ago and I really like it. Before I got it I had horrible painful heavy periods. They were so bad I had to use tampons n pads together. When I got my IUD I did have cramps for a couple days and a constant light period for 2-3 wks but after that, everything has been great! I've had one very very light period with no cramping at all. So far, its the best birth control I've ever used :-)

I have had the mirana for a year now and I dont remember it givig me any problems but i got it right after my daughter was born so maybe I just thought that the bleeding with from that. I have only had one period since I got it. and that was in nov. So I love it. I am a little worried about it coming out or in. Or messing up something. But It hasn't so far. My sis got one too right after he some was born And that was 4 years now. She has had no pregnancies or other problems with it. Hope you find a bc that works for you.

it happened to me to. it feels like i never stopped bleeding after she was born. it almost seems not worth it. i spend so much money on panty liners and tampons its ridiculous... i feel you pain !

I got my IUD almost 4 years ago. In the first year I remember getting my period for about a month once and then nothing for months then a little spotting from time to time. Last year I got a period for 3 days and the past few months a little spotting. I have gone to two check ups specifically for the IUD and I get a papsmear yearly and they check it then too and all is well and good with mine. But I feel your pain I remember so clearly having mine for so long in the first year and now its been gone a while. Hope it gets better for ya.

i am getting the marina inserted very soon my dr said it can muck u around for a little while but after min 3 months most woman no longer get a period at all while the marina is in

I had the Marina put in last October and i've had a period since.I had to get it taken out b/c my gyno said that my body is just rejecting the iud.I just got it taken out this month and put on the pill and ive had no trouble or bleeding since.

I have the Mirena IUD..& absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! I had it for 5 years & then had it replaced last april...so ive had this type for 6 yrs. This 1st time I got it I bled for 6 weeks & havent had a period since... in the 1st 5 yrs i spotted mayb 1 or 2 times a yr...which wasnt even enough 2 use a tampon or pantyliner, or anything... Whn I got the old one removed & the new one put in (in the same visit) I bled, like a light period for about a half a day & havent done anything @ all since.
I love it. They do tell u 2 check the strings once a month bcause your partner cna dislodge it OR a heavy period can flush it out. But all in all I LOVE IT & would highly recommend it to ANYONE!

i 've had mine in for 9 months and that just happened to me and my dr said that if you had sex when it looked like you period was over it will start up again. so if that was your case wait to have sex until you know your period is completely over.

Yes, I've had an IUD twice-once after my 4 year old and then another after my 2 year old. Both times I had my period frequently and it was very unpredictable as to when it was coming. After having it in for nearly 6 months, the periods stopped all together. With both IUD's, however, they migrated into the lining of my uterus and this last time did some pretty good damage. Be careful and monitor your body closely. As for the periods, it should get better.

i had my Mirena for a year and 2 months and for the pst couple of months iv been getting a periond every two weeks. I went to my obgyn yesterday and he said it wasnt normal so i had a ultra sound done and growing on my Mirena is a Polyp thats why im bleeding every two weeks...So i have an appointment made to get the Polyp removed...I would get checked out because something could be wrong.

I got my IUD 8 months ago and for the first 3 months I had periods that lasted for 2 weeks at a time with a 1 week break in between each. But since then I have had 2 periods (every 2 1/2 months)... your body just needs to adjust to all the hormonal changes going on... Don't worry.

I have the mirena. At first i had periods, but now i just spot but it never lasts long, besides that i haven't had any problems with it

i have the mirena too and its alot of spotting at first and they recommend you check your strings make sure its still in!!! It is rare that they fall out but it could happen!! so CHECK!!! other than that it has been great.

I had a Mirena put in at my 6 week follow up appt.. It has now been 1 1/2 years and I love it.. I had a cycle for about 2 months after it was put in, but now I have a cycle about every three months and they last for like 2 days.. The only downfall is that I don't know when they are going to hit.. However, they are so light they don't do much damage before I catch it.. I don't experience the mood swings that I had on the pill.. like I said, I love it. (we also use condoms as a back up.. we always have used two types of birth control when we are trying to prevent pregnancy)

Yep i had mine in for just two months, had cramps, and spotting, and then eventually i somehow managed to conceive my third child on it, and had to have it removed from placenta after the birth (soz if tmi!) I personally wouldnt have any form of hormonal contraceptive again and have started charting....if this persits see family planning for less invasive options maybe. Everbody reacts dif to the hormones..x hope this resolves soon for ya x

I also have an IUD. Like you I have, what seems to be a million periods in just a month. My doctor said that it's normal and there is nothing I should be worried about. We are just stuck with having a million periods but hey, at least we can't get pregnant again!

I have the copper IUD, which I got put in at my 6 week postpartum checkup. I had a little bit of initial bleeding after it was put in, then my first period came like normal a few weeks later when it was supposed to. However, it was heavier and longer than normal. Now this month, I was expecting my period again and having all the period symptoms, but I hardly have any bleeding. It's very light, and more pinkish than red. I still feel gassy, crampy, and bloated, so I know it's my period, but the bleeding is very light. I have had no problems with the IUD and have loved it so far.

I have had that problem, for the first three months i had my period non stop, i just waited that time out and now my cycle has gone back to normal. My dr suggested if it is to inconveniant for u that u shld remove it, i just waited.

OMGOSH! This is one of my very frustrations at this point! Ive had my IUD for 3mos & im still irregular & spotting :/ it pretty much stinks & i hope it ends soon! For both of us!

well there are two diff. kinds of IUDs which kind do you have in? the copper one or the one that lets hormones slowly out? I have the copper one, and i have the same problems. I had problems before though so I don't honestly know if they are made worse by the IUD or if they are a whole new set of problems. After looking it up ( a bunch ! lol) I have found out that spotting in between periods is normal, heavey flows with more clots coming out is normal, and heavy cramping can also be normal. Going and seeing your Doc is the best choice ( I plan on seeing mine too). I would love to know what the doctor let you know.

I do not have an IUD...however a friend of mine does. She said for the first month she had her period for 2 weeks. The second month she got her period regularly, with some spotting between month 1 and month 2. After the second month she got her periods regularly, without any spotting in between, and after a year of having her IUD inserted she no longer gets a period. She says she really likes her IUD and recommends it. Hopefully things get better for you!

I have Mirena and you can actually bleed for the first 6 months, but it should stop after that. It is frustrating, but to be period free for 4 and a half years would be good. Be sure to check that it is in after each period because it can become dislodged and travel elswhere causing pregnancy or an infection. I've had mine since December and the bleeding stops and I just spot occasionally.

Oh yes! After my daughter was born in 2007 I got an IUD. It was put in September 2007. From the time I had it put in until I had it removed in March 2008 there were only a total of 5 weeks that I wasn't bleeding. It had to go. I got rid of it and went back to the pill.

I am getting the same problem, this is also my last resort to being on birth control. i GET A HUGE reaction to being on any hormones, it makes me crazy and wayyyy to emotional. It's sad actually. I get my period every 2 weeks with this copper iud. I am just so frustrated because I ts so heavy when I do have it and its making me think something is wrong. It has been 6 months too. My doctors app is the end of this week so we will see how it goes. But I dont want to get it taken out because then I will get pregnant, my partner wont wear condoms....

I had the Mirena in for three years after my second child was born. The bleeding stopped after the first month, and I didn't have a period after that until I had the Mirena removed, nor did I have cramps. I also didn't gain any weight. What I haven't noticed yet in the other replies is this: if you decide you're ready to get pregnant again and have the Mirena taken out (don't know if this applies to the Copper T, my OB/GYN was highly against using it), it can take up to a year before fertility returns. My prior OB/GYN said fertility came back within 2-3 months of having it removed, which is the only reason I was accepting of using it to begin with. It took exactly a year before I finally got pregnant with our third. I didn't want my kids that far apart in age, and was quite upset once I did the research on it all.

I got the IUD 2 months after my daughter was born, I spotted for a few weeks and it felt like I had a period forever but after about 2 months it stopped now sometimes I have a period and sometimes I dont but if I do have a period its usually lite and doesnt last but a few days.

Sometimes, I wonder it the fact I had mine put it while I WASN'T on my period has something to do with it, because I dont recall all this extreme long periods of bleeding comments I've read. The doctor said that that is normally when it is done, but in my case, it didn't bother me and I only spotted a little from the placement.

You will be fine, it can take years before you stop bledding completely. You just have to look forward for when that time comes, it can start soon or maybe later, just like the doctor says, every woman's body adjusts to the IUD different. I think it has something to do with the kind of period you have had since you started. If you were regularly a heavy bleeder for the first 3 days, I would think it will take longer for the IUD to make a positive effect on your period. See I never had a bad period....usually I only had 1 heavy day, and my second would vary from mid-heavy to light....and after that it would be spotting..so me I practically get barely anything now on my 5th year. But after my 1yr, it was already great, just spotting and only on the first day.
