My son, who is 3 years 9 months old, has been peeing on the potty for almost a year. But, I can't get him to poop on the potty! He went one time on his own, I put the potty in front of the tv and left it and he finally just went. (When my 2 year old was napping b/c if he were up he would of thought it was to play with.) Then he was afraid to go it again. I got him to poop on it another time by putting a diaper on him and cutting a hole out in the back. He was fine and proud of himself, but he won't do that again! He pees in the regular potty, but the two times he pooped it was in the baby potty. He won't even think of pooping on the regular potty, even with the seat you put on it for kids. I know this is a somewhat common problem and I even asked a Psychologist and he said not to be concerned until he is 4, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions?

Quoting Emma:

i can relate to you here, it was an endless battle with my son, but then i read an article. let him wear his nappy and take him by the bathroom door, encourage him to go in his nappy, after a week, get him to stand in the bathroom and again, go in his nappy.  week 3 get him to sit on the potty / toilet (nappy remains on) and encourage him to go in his nappy whilst sitting there, week 4, take him to bathroom and take his nappy off and he should know to sit on the potty or toilet and go.

this was a lifesaver and hey, 4weeks seems like a long time, but it beats 4mths etc etc

I read this same article!  Written by a Psychologist!  The one I read said week 4 cut a hole in the diaper and week 5 get them on the potty without a diaper.  I jumped ahead to the cut a hole in the diaper and have him sit on the potty, but I think I should do it just like you posted and not get ahead of myself! Thanks!

My son did the same thing and my pediatrician suggested using a treasure box with little trinkets...my son loved trains and things that squished so I filled a shoe box up with those things and a handfull of candies. I told him if he put his stink in the potty he could pick out a cool treasure. It took about a month for him to grasp the concept but once he did no more accidents. My hubby also started saying at random times and when accidents did happen "Pee and Stink go in the potty...where does your stink go?" My son started repeating and then did!! Good luck!!

We had the same problem and we did two things that seem to make the difference.  Our library has the Bear in the Big Blue house potty video.  That was very detailed and had songs we could sing that were kinda cool.  I'm lame, I know!   Also, we went our local dollar store and found a potty training doll.  We taught him how to train the doll to use the potty.  Did it all in the kitchen, but these things don't poop.  Sooooo...this is kinda gross, but I chewed up a raise and dropped in the little potty as the doll was going pee.  He freaked...Was like, Mommy, he poopoo'ed!!

Hope that helps.
