Kelly - posted on 07/23/2010 ( 9 moms have responded )

I cannot get our 5month old daughter to sleep throughout the nite or in her crib. At night time I do put baby cereal in her bottles to try an keep her tummy full. She still wakes up every night at 4AM then wide awake at 7AM. I feel at lost because I dont know what else to do I work afternoons so its hard to have a set schedule to follow with bath, read, sleep ETC. Any advice will be appreciated!

I was told by my daughters doctor that if she is sleeping 5-6 hours straight that IS sleeping through the night.... lol And I have done research on putting ceral in the bottle and its proven that it doesn't make them sleep through the night either it really just depends on the child... I have known babies who have slept through the night since born and some toddlers that still don't sleep all night long.... I know you said you work afternoons but have you tried a earlier bedtime my 4 month sleeps longer when she goes to bed at 5pm then when she was staying up later....

actually no need to be scared my daughter does not sleep with us and she never has. She has a sleeper seat craddle thing made by fisher price which hold up to 22 pounds, and she likes to sleep with her boppy laid out on a blanket.

We usually try to keep her awake till 930-11. seems late but like i said I work afternoons and she is adapted to me coming home that late.

I leave a night light on in hall till she falls asleep then I shut it off

I consider sleeping from a normal bedtime (7, or 8) to 4-5 in the morning sleeping through the night. Where else would the baby sleep BUT the crib. Reading horror stories like this one makes me realize I am SO glad I made the choice to never let him sleep with me unless he was sick!~

sleep through the night? whats that? lol!
my son is 7 months and still wakes 2 times.
cereal doesnt work. my son has had cereal in his bottle since 1 month old bc of reflux and thats the only thing it is good for.
just make sure baby is tired when u try to put baby to bed. i just realized last week that i "put" my son to sleep when he wasnt even tired, and that would cause him to wake sooner and stay awake in the middle of the night. hope u get some rest! im sorry i didnt help much!

i think it sounds normal. some babies just are not ready to sleep through the night until later. keep in mind that a doctors definition of sleeping through the night is 5 or 6 hours. also, studies have shown that giving cereal before bed does not actually help baby sleep longer. giving cereal in the bottle can also be quite a choking hazard and is never recommended.

a bedtime routine doesn't have to be at the same time every night, as long as baby is drowsy it'll work.

my son is 8 months old and still wake once a night. it kind of comes with the territory :/ i trust he will outgrow it when he is good and ready to.

It sounds pretty normal to me. My son didn't sleep through the night till he was 13 months old, and at 5 months he was still waking every 3 hours to feed. I was working full time and waking up at 6 to get to work, driving an hour to work each way. It's exhausting!

Also, when do you put her to bed? With our son we would try to adjust his bedtime so I could get the most amount of sleep, I think 9 or 10 we'd put him to sleep, and some nights my husband would stay up with him so I'd get more rest.

Try just putting her in the crib at naptime. If that works, then start putting her in there more often. Is there a light in there? I don't think my son likes the dark, I keep a lamp on in his room all night. He was 6 months old when he started sleeping in his crib. Probably until he was about 8 months old he would wake up once a night for a feeding, then go right back to sleep. She will get it eventually. Just have patience & keep on keeping on!

hmm i think my son started sleeping through the night about 4mo. i also had to thicken his bottles up to help him sleep thru. i would try to keep him as active as i could at night time then maybe about 11ish i would lay him down. i also gave him a bath at night with the night time johnson stuff. I also work second shift and now we have the routine down except when he is cutting some teeth! So usually he sleeps from 11 to 8. Good luck
