HELP!!!!! my doctor told me to put cereal in my sons bottle and i can't figure out how to make the nipple bigger. i've put 3 toothpicks through it at a time and it still seems like work for him to eat. i've been told to cut a small slit in the nipple but i thought if nipples are cut or ripped i had to throw them away! HELP!!!!!!

no worries... good luck hope he grows out of it... it's not nice, I have it myself, although I'm not too bad now... my eldest has outgrown it, but my youngest still has bouts of acid reflux at times.

Also just a thought, if it helps... My eldest had terrible reflux, I found she wasn't as bad if I didn't heat the bottles... the warmer temperature seemed to make it worse. Boil the water and just leave it to cool to about room temperature and try that. It made a huge difference for us.

In that case then try snipping a cross in the teat, and look for a variable flow teat aswell. are you in the UK??

I'm so sorry for you and your son! That sounds horrible. LIke I said though, I know they sell special bottles for feeding cereal. I know I've seen them at Babies R Us and I'm sure you can find them online.
Best of luck!

the reason my son's doctor told me to put cereal in his bottle is the following:

he was born 2 1/2 months early and is now 8 months old. he loves cereal and she told me many times that it is a bad idea to put cereal in his bottle until now. he has really bad acid reflux due to the caffeine that he was on with his apnea. he got a load dose that ended up burning his throut to his tummy causing severe pain for him. and its related to acid reflux. he isn't heavy enough to up his medication for this but he does really well on his solids and i can't be feeding him 8 times a day by spoon and he still needs the 25 cal formula. he does better with heavier food then he does with formula so she wants me to make the formula heavier with the cereal and when i get it too work it seems to be making him feel better but it doesn't last long before something happens to the nipple and i have to attempt to make it bigger. he has a wonderful doctor that has talked to me about many things and she and i feel that this is the best and only way to make him feel better. and she also told me that this is one of the only case that the AAP says it is okay to put cereal in a bottle.

I know they sell special bottles for this, but I too have always been told this is a really bad idea. If your son is old enough to have cereal, he's old enough to take it by a spoon. And even then the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no cereal/solid food until at least 6 months of age to let the digestive tract mature enough to handle it.

You can get variable flow teats from most chemists that have a cross cut in them rather than holes (or at least they did 7 years ago)

What I don't get is why a doctor would suggest putting cereal in a bottle for... I always thought that was a very bad idea... it can cause the child to choke. It may be worth having a word with your Health Visitor about this before you take your GPs word for it.
