Hi everyone - I'm due at the end of April with my first and I will NEED a good realiable but affordable breast pump for when I go back to work. I've read some customer reviews on Babies R Us but it wasn't enough to convince me on one or another. I'd like to stay under $100 but it seems that the more expensive, the more liked... I would get one just to test it, but obviously they are nonreturnable once opened. Is it true when it comes to breast pumps, you get what you pay for?

Hi, I just gave birth to my son three weeks ago and i purchased the Lansinoh electric breast pump. I love it! You can control the speed and suction to your comfort level. I would suggest reading the reviews from Walmart's website.

i have the Amendea pump which i got with a discount at the hospital i work at. i love it, it doesn't hurt, it works with batteries or AC, is small and easy to take into work to pump. it comes with 6 4oz bottles and a few spare parts. it was just under 250 for me but well worth it. I definatly agree that renting one from your local hospital for the first month is a great idea as breastfeeding can be very difficult and a pump is a big investment. best of luck on your search! and just remember that despite the challenges of getting used to breastfeeding it is the most rewarding and satisfying part of new motherhood!

Different pumps work differently for different moms.

I got through part time work with teh Avent Isis hand pump with no problems.

I have friends who couldn't use anything but the Pump in Style, though.

I got the Medela Pump in Style and I loved it!!  Yes, they are expensive but you really do get what you pay for.   But think about it this way- if you plan on having more kids than you will get your money's worth.

I have the medela in style I think its called... it's a packpack. It has the two phase pumping... so it imatates a baby's first quick suckles to get the milk going and then the slower suckles afterwords. I like it alot and I was fortunate enough to have it given to me. All I had to do was get a new set of tubes , breastshields and bottles (30 vs. 300+ dollars). I know that you can rent a pump from most pharmacies, all you have to do is go to the medela web site and they tell you the closest place to get one. I would rent one and try it out for a month before buying so that you can see if breastfeeding is going to work out for you first and if you like certain features or not.

Quoting Danielle:

the Medela Swing! You can pump 4-6 times a day and not lose supply. It is pricey, but you can check craigslist for a used one which should run around $100. You can buy all the replacement parts like the tubing, etc. so it is sanitary.

I couldn't breast feed, my motherinlaw went out and brought me the Medela Swing! it was fantastic! Its electronic and does not hurt!

You can use it either electonicly (as in plugged in at the wall) or you can use it with batteries.

It'l be a great investment!

The question you have to ask yourself before you buy a pump is what am I going to use it for? Do you need help with engorgement or are you planning to return to work? I bought 2 pumps. I got the Avent Hand pump for about $25 to help while I was home on maternity leave. It was cheap and it worked (your hands do get tired though)! When I went back to work I heard such good things about the Medela Pump 'n Style. It was incredible! I am convinced it is what allowed me achieve my goal of working and breast feeding my daughter for a year. Check with your insurance. Sometimes they will give you a discount or a coupon for the purchase of a breast pump. I even rented one from the Lactation Center at the hospital I delivered at to compare and I preferred the Medela Pump 'n Style over the hospital grade pump.

Check with your insurance company. The Medela is obviously the most known brand (and most expensive!) and usually thought of as the best. My friend was able to get one through her insurance for super cheap.

I brought the Aventis hand breast pump it was $60 two years ago. I found it was awesome easy to clean and fits into most sterilizers and it comes with 2 bottles to get you started and some come with the cleaning brushes. the funnel bit is a soft silicone and the whole contraption is light weight it took only a couple of goes to get the suction right but it did hurt at all and to me it was as close to the normal suckle of a baby. The Aventis pump is at Babies R Us or Target or Big W and I think KMart. Happy shopping and hope this helps...

I bought one to get me by and I hated it and it hurt...then I bought the playtext petite double electric breast pump from babies r us for 79.99 and I love it!!!  Its not the fastest(although it doesnt take as long as some people said) but it doesnt hurt at all since it has silicone padded cups and it worked without me having to squeeze my boobs and feel like I was milking myself like a cow! I recomend this to anyone who needs one and the best part is the milk goes right into one of the drop-ins bottle in a liner so the air never gets to it and it was all ready to go for my son.  I'm a first time mom and only 26 so I had to experiment to get a good product and this one was great!
