my son is almost 4 months old and sleeps 10 hours at night and i keep trying to change his diaper half way through the night but when i do this he will not go back to sleep. i have tried it in complete dark, tried rocking him back to sleep afterwards but once i've changed him he's wide awake and he wants a bottle. is it ok for him to go this long without a diaper change? i lather on the butt paste before bed but still feel bad. what do other mom's do?

I dont know if anyone said this yet there are alot of comments but a wipe warmer! I had one I used on my little cousin and now I have to get one for myself. It just makes it so the coldness of the wipe doesnt wake them up its a life saver.

I put my son in sposies at night for this reason. With a sposie he could go all night without a leak and the sposies really draw the moisture away.

Hi there,

try to change his diaper while you feeds him at night and try it slowly, I'm sure he wont realize that you're done changing his pads :)

I didn't wake my kids up to change them in the night but if you feel that you need to try putting him to bed in a nightie that is open at the bottom so you don't have to undress him entirely. Keep the lights low, maybe try putting nature sounds in the background while he sleeps to camoflauge the sounds you make changing him.

try buying the next size diaper up for the night time. so if he wears a size 3 buy a 4. or they make night time diapers that soaks up more. all 3 of my boys slept through the night by 2 months and i had the same problem.

I change my daughter if her diaper is soaked and I mean hanging to the ground. She is 1 and wakes up around 3 for a bottle. I give her the bottle while I change her and I don't use a wipe (too cold) I just put some powder on, and make sure I change her when she wakes up first thing. I also change her right before her nighttime feeding ( 9pm). I also find that because she is eating solids, her urine is smellier and she gets more susceptable to a diaper rash, so more frequent changings are needed. Knock on wood she hasn't had one yet!

i noticed that the wipes tend to wake the baby up especially when they are cold so I would recommend a wipes warmer, but my daughter tends to sleep right through it I be very gentle but quick. Or try changing their diaper while feeding this technic works. [prop bottle]

I have made the mistake of waking my son up to change his diaper and I wouldn't recommend it. Diapers should hold up all night up to 12 hours. If they don't go up a size at night or they do make night time diapers.

I have 2 kids, and with the first one i did what you did,and went through that. With my second one i didn't disturb her at all. If i was already up yes i would, but in the middle of the night no. I just made sure when she woke up i put a clean one on her,and she went to bed with a clean diaper. You need your rest too and i know that with a 4mth old it is hard.

ooh yea thats a point actually - people told me when my little one was small to put on loads of bum cream & they were soooo wrong, her bum was REALLY sore cus as others have said it stops the nappy from absorbing! if their bum is sore just use a v small amount & rub it in well. if not sore don't use it..... ;-)

there isn't a need to change him during the night - just change him just b4 bed as part of your routine. nappys last all night without leaking - there's no need to change him in the middle of the night...he'll be fine ;-)

My daughter is about 7 months old now. she has always slept through the night, shes generally a heavy sleeper, but it changes from night to night. I usually just make sure i change her right before I put her down for the night so that if she is sleeping lightly that night i dont have to worry about her soaking through. When i do have to change her while shes sleeping, im just slower and and try to move her as little as possible. Try warming the wipe before you use it. I find if i forget to do that the cold wipe will disturb her sleep and then when i try to finish she wakes up. I also usually let her sleep in just a shirt so that i dont have to take off pj pants or unsnap a sleeper and get her legs in and out.

I dont like her using a soother during sleep, but i keep one near me when im changing her and if she starts to wake and fuss i put the soother in her mouth while im changing her, and let her use it till im done and sure shes not going to wake up. shell usually suck for a bit and then spit it out or ill go back a few minutes later and take it out.

i dont know what time you usually go to bed, but im used to being up very late. what i found that worked really well with my daughter is that shed usually go to bed at 11 and stay down for the night. but im not usually tired enough to sleep till about 3 am. So what i do is let her go to bed at 11. Make sure she has a clean diaper, and let her sleep untill around 3 am when im ready to go to bed. By then she usually needs a change and a bottle. So i change her, in her crib, and then give her a bottle. she will usually finish her bottle and then go right back to sleep. i find changing her at 3 usually means that i dont have to worry about her soaking through and shes usually up at 8 or 9.

we both get to sleep through the night and i dont have to feel guilty about not changing her. . i also found a huge differance when i switched to pampers. i was using a cheaper diaper because they were half the price, but i ran out one day when i was at a friends and had to run to a store near her house they olny had pampers on cheap so i got them and havent switched back since. it means spending about $7 more but its well worth it.

Hope this helps and i hope everything works out well for you. good luck :)

Pampers has these great night time diapers that last through the night I'd try those! And there's this triple paste diaper cream that's amazing!

I always make sure to change it before he goes to bed for the night. By the ways I have a month and a half son. But sometimes i dont change it until early morning and it has been working well for me. Also i try to put a gown pjs on him so that i all have to do is pull up on it and not have to un button and take his legs out, less movement is better. I have heard that using a pacifier at night is good for your baby its suppose to reduce the change of sids. I would try that also.

i have a 2 year old and a 4 month old girl and with both of mine ive changed them just before putting them to bed and unless i could tell that theyve pooed or have a very wet nappy ive left them till the morning but if it is needed then try to do it in the crib as dim lit as possible if it makes u feel guilty about leaving him in the same nappy throughout the night u could always try to clean him with cooled boiled water and cotton wool instead of baby wipes when u change the nappy in the morning i hope this helps

only change it if you smell something - my little one was sometimes sleeping 12-14 hour at night and although his nappy was huge if i put on cream before he never got sore.

i would say leave him if he is sleeping. my daughter of almost 6 months sleeps in cotton bio-baba nappies and sleeps straight through in them. After her morning feed at about 6, I often let her go back to sleep again and only change her when she wakes at about 8. Sometimes we use huggies disposables, but with neither system have I had any problems whatsoever. She only soils her nappies in the day time, the night time ones are only wet and she has never had diaper rush of any kind.

I have to add that she has slept through since about 7 weeks and we have never had to change her unless she is already awake.

Good luck!

let him sleep! its not gonna hurt him to have a wet diaper thru the night. All you are doing is training him to wake up every night, pretty soon you wont have to wake him to change the diaper he will be waking you up. Besides tired mommies dont make good mommies, you need your sleep too.

Quoting Erica:

well he actually has no problem falling asleep it is staying asleep for long periods of time , we tried letting him slep in bed with us , we let him fuss a little bit at night but its hard b/c he is in the same room with us, we also have a 3year old we had no problems with when he was a baby. And he is breastfeed so his milk is already warm

Is he waking up for milk?  If so maybe he is not getting enough during the day to keep him sleeping during the night.  I feed my son formula and make sure that he has atleast 28 oz a day and make sure the last bottle is right before bed time and it will do the trick every time.  If he is getting enough to eat but still waking up for milk maybe it is something for security.  Maybe try to give him water during the night and it will help.  Or try the heartbeat monitor thing that they came out with... I heard that it really helps soothe babies that have problems sleeping.

Unless hes doing a number two I wouldnt change it, theres no need, change him before you put him down to bed he'll be fine in it till morning, you cant be expected to get up during the night every night to change him, enjoy the full nights sleep your getting, most nappies have that whole 12hour protection :)

i think that as long as h'es sleeping, let him be. try using the new pampers baby dry. they work up to 12 hrs. my daughter uses them. but also, does he get any diaper rash going all nite without a change? if not, dont worry about it. take the time to sleep yourself!

My daughter is 5 months old and sleeps 12 hours through the night!!! I change her right before i lay her down and i put her in a diaper that is one size bigger at night only so it will absorb the whole nights product. Shes never had any leaks or has never had an irritated behind.

Unless I smelled poo I let it go but luckly I have hard sleepers so it was pretty easy but with 5 kids they have to be able to sleep through alot in order to get any sleep at all.

if you're feeding him at night, pop the bottle in than do while he eats (prop the bottle)

or

no bottoms to the diapers while he sleeps, and VERY SLOWLY. lol

i only had to do night changes when my daughters were still being fed through the night, so i would prop the bottle and let them eat while i changed them, or changed them first and then fed them back to sleep. Now that they don't eat at night, there is no reason to change them.

you do not have to change their diaper during the night if they are still a sleep. doctors say only change their diaper if they are crying and a wake. do not wake a sleeping baby. you will be messing with their sleep. i should know i have 4 kids lol

hi

my little girl is now 9 months old, she only woke up for night feeds untill she was 6.5 weeks old and then she started sleeping through the night. at first i felt really unsure about not changing her nappy half way through the night... then i though this is crazy plenty of babys sleep the whole night through without a nappy change so i just stopped! she never poos at night, she has only ever leaked twice and i never ever have a problem with nappy rash... i think if your using a good quality nappy that is absorbant enough you should have no problem at all.

have you tried overnite diapers? does your baby sleep on his back or stomach? i have been able to master changing diapers on my kids while sleeping. it takes some time but everyone finds their own little tricks. if they are on their backs i will open up the new diaper slide it under them, then undo the dirty diaper slide it off then all you have to do is lift up the new one. it seems to be pretty fast and works great for me. or right before you put baby to bed put a fresh diaper on him. but i wouldnt ever wake a sleeping baby!

Id let him cry it out! both my kids were good sleepers from the start, but they did start waking through the night i give them there dummy or a bottle if that didnt work id let them have a cry. try having the room dark and give him a rub on the back seems to sooth them...
