How do you fatten your baby up?

[deleted account] ( 101 moms have responded )

My son is a skinny baby, my husband's and my whole family are all petite but my son weights ounces less than he did at 6 months and we're worried. I hear adding the Rice cereal to his formula will start to add weight. He eats 4-5 3.5oz stage 2 solid baby foods a day and 4-5 bottles a day of formula. I just don't understand with both of those foods why he would not gain? We are doing lab work but I need him to gain, any ideas?

i would talk to your childs dr. and see what they say if they are concerned they might have you add butter to the food but i think that is a last resort, maybe try mixing baby rice or baby oatmeal in with the stage 2 foods or if he chews try giving him stage 3 even without teeth he should still be able to mash it enough with his gums and for a snack you could give him a half slice of toast.

Yogurt. You can even add jello mix to yogurt. My daughter is really underweight, she's not even on the chart. She's eating pancakes with syrup, ground beef, cream cheese on bagels, and pasta to raise her calorie intake. Also you can add butter to vegetables and other meals for your baby. My baby is 10 months and only weighs 15 lbs. Your baby is 17 lbs though and is well within that weight chart. Definitely change doctors because that's crazy. It's normal for their way to stay pretty even as well because he's more active from crawling & cruising

my daughter is on rice cerial and formula as well as breast milk, she is now 9 months and 34 pounds.she gained alot during the lastfew months. All babies will lose some before the gain.
If your baby is old enough to have banana or yogourt in the cerial theen that will help.if not your baby will start to gain with what he or she is eating.

my daughter is 22 months old and only 20 lbs. The dr's say she is healthy and all babies are different. I did buy a baby scale to keep an eye on her at home and this website is great for keeping track of caloric intake - http://caloriecount.about.com/

But over all she is fine! just tiny :)

I always wanted to know the answer to this question also because my son was born 5lbs 12oz. he is now 14 months old and 18 lbs. He is a little piggie, eating everything in sight. we feed him his food and he eats our s as well, and sometimes depending on wat we have we blend him the same things we eat, but he s still small. Doc said he could jus be a little guy cuz me and my fam are petite ppl, but he wants to check his wieght again in 3 more months to make sure he s gaining and not losing. But he is also a very active little boy, cant sit still for nothing. Always on the move. I wonder does that contribute in the weight dept???

Try the rice with his formula Also May want to try a different formula..I think its enfimil AR that helped alot with my baby..My son had the same problem at 6 months he was diagnose with Acid Reflux but grew out of it by the time he was 10 months old...If he's not spitting up after feeding then I don't think you'll have to worry about that...But getting lab work done is good idea just ot be on the safe side. If he's teething sometimes they won't have much of an appetite either..I sure hope that this helps you hun. Good luck and keep us all inform :)

[deleted account]

Omg...now I'm worried! ****Gina Duley**** How did they finally diagnose your son at 2? We're moving to Stockton, ca and so that is the reason I told her I am switching regardless. I'm wondering did they do blood work to diagnose your son? Was this an ongoing weight loss for a few check ups? This is the first time he's lost weight and it was only a few ounces not pounds. He is active and NO he doesn't spit up AT ALL. He eats and drink and NEVER spits up. I only worry because I think she mentioned the thyroid to be safe in doing the blood work. You said that the respitory stuff didn't come until later. I'm wondering what is all of that anyway? How could or would I know if that is something he has...the blood work? I doubt it is because he's so healthy and eats a lot and is very active...but the mention of the breathing problems not coming until later and being a first time mom I'm scared of everything!! Y'all have been so helpful and so encouraging we can't begin to thank y'all enough for your support and advice!!! I LOVE THIS SITE!!!

some of the time when the child starts to move around they will lose weight. you can try to give some table food like mash up fruit and vegetables and oatmeal with milk you are giving your son. but weight doesn't matter just as long as he is healthy.

Both of my kids are petite my daughter is now 4 and just hit the 30 lbs mark with shoes on!! she is 34.5 inches tall though she was alot like your son tall and skinny. at 9 mos i think she only weighed 15lbs if that we just made sure she had snacks and ate when our doctor did worry about her weight she asked us to add pedisure to her diet to help gain weight.

also your son lost ounces not pounds so dont be stressed about a few ounces maybe he pooped right before you had him weighed:)

I would not worry too much....I think as long as your baby is happy and healthy there is no need to worry. My daughter Peyton has always been very petite as well...she is 15 months old and weigh 18 maybe 19 pounds...and she is one of the happiest babies i know. All babies are different, but i think as long as his weight is not affecting him it should not be a problem.

If you are worried though, I would also suggest cereal in his bottle as well. I think my daughter was eating around 5oz at six months as well without cereal...I tried cereal but I ended up stopping it because she seemed perfectly fine without it. I would go with your instincts. :]

ok so i don't think you should worry about it my son is 11 months and he is 18 lbs 5 oz at 11 months if your son is 17 lbs and he is 9 months old i don't see thats anything to worry about when we went to the 6th month check up my doctor said that because they are becoming more active they might not gain as much even loose some yes my sone was born at 7lbs 8 oz and has gained weight very slow and went from the 50% the first 1 month and a half to 5% then moved up to 10% at 9 months but hasn't gained that much since his 9 month check up and my doctor never said she would call cps on me maybe you should look into getting a new doctor or atleast talk to some new doctors to get there thoughts! GOOD LUCK trust me i have been trying to fatten up my kid but i haven't really found anything that has worked

I had the same problem but it was because my son threw everything up that he could only eat small amounts to be able to keep it down and the trick to gain weight is one teaspoon a day in one bottle of corn oil...also keeps them from being constipated

I'm not sure why he would lose weight, but I have heard of it happening. Does he happen to spit up a lot or have diarrhea? A friend of mines daughter had a lot of spit up and lost weight. But any ways, I would suggest adding rice cereal to the baby food. I did that with my son, he loved it. Maybe start off with smaller amounts so he can get the hang of the thicker texture, but I think it could help put on weight, if their isn't anything health related wrong. I wish the best for you and your little boy. Hopefully he will gain some weight soon!

Also I COMPLETELY know what you mean about his doctor!!!! My son's doctor called me a bad mom, just worded it differently. She never took action when needed with my son, but then accused me of over feeding my son! He would spit up a lot, and she told me it was cause I stuffed him so full! But in turn he had acid reflux. So I am glad that you are moving and I'm sure you will find a better doctor!

my son as well is skinny and has not gained much weight for the past 2 months but the doctor said to not worry, if hes eating well and acting normal as being active there should not be any problem. He is just a baby you should not worry about the weight problem as severely, but if he is acting different or you think its just not right than maybe adding the cereal to his formula may help. Wish you the best..

I had a doc do the same thing to me with my first child, don't change doctors right away! She will just call CPS and say that you are running from her to hide child abuse and neglect. You need to take your son to another doctor while still seeing her and tell the new doctor about what is happening. If your son's weight is a problem, have a sweat test for Cystic Fibrosis done and have his thyroid checked. My son has Cystic Fibrosis. Usually it is noticed because of respitory problems and lack of weight gain. My son didn't have any respitory problems for the first year of his life though. He was 2 when he was diagnosed finally. If you want to help him gain weight faster, feed him cereal and/or yogurt at night before bed. You should use adult yogurt without fruit. Especially not strawberry. Babies and toddlers can easily have reactions to fruits and berries the first time they eat them. Late night feedings should be the largest meals to help gain weight because the body stores the foods in fat cells rather than breaking it down and creating waste (poop) with it.

By the way, I would tell someone about your doctor because that was a wrongful accusation and it sucks. I hope you get a wonderful doctor. My daughter is in the under 0 percentile and weighs 18 lbs at almost 2 years old. She was 5 lbs and 12 oz when she was born. You should never have to go through a doctor that questions your morals. My doctor has only asked "what are you feeding her?" and suggested more stuff to give her. Good luck!!! Your son is soooo cute by the way.

From what I see your baby is around 9 months. Usually around this time babies start to move around more. Become more mobile. So it is very normula for them to loose weight since they are becoming active and burning more calories. Feeding your son rice will NOT fatten him up. For once its empty calories and all it will do is fill his stomach quicker so he eats LESS. Have you talked to your doctor? If your doctor was worried then he would put him on a high calorie formula. My son lost a bit of weight also when he was around 5 months old or so. We were worried but our doctor wasn't. He said to come back in 2 weeks and if he had lost more weight then we would go from there. Went back and he had gained about 5oz. Also has your baby gets closer to a year their weight gain starts to slow down.

My daughter is the same way and what advice I got was to use avocado as a spread on toast. When he is able to eat more foods, start putting butter on everything he eats. Butter and avocado are good fats. He should also maybe do a snack in between breakfast and lunch, then another snack in between lunch and dinner. Does he throw up a lot? My daughter ended up having acid reflux. You should check into these things. I hope it goes good.

i am having the same problem. i brought my son in for a well child check up at 7 months and he weighed the same as he did at 5 months. his doctor recommended that when i make him food like mashed potatoes etc. I add butter or oil to his. also i dont feed him baby food anymore I make my own. often mashing up what ever it is im eating. it seems to be working but he has a weight check on monday so ill let you know.

also you might want to switch doctors. My son is 8 months 31 inches long and weighs only 15lbs. and his doctor was concerned but never blamed me and DEFINITELY did not mention turning me into CPS. thats ridiculous.

Adding rice cereal won't necessary add weight. Some kids can eat and eat but not gain weight. My son would drink almost twice what the dr's told him to, and eat solids, but he gained very slowly.

Try looking for foods that have a little extra fat. Avacado might help. Other than that just keep offering your child food and drink and he/she will be just fine.

I am really sorry to hear that. If any one threatened to call cys I would also be in fear my kids are my whole world. I used to babysit a little boy and he was 9 months and 13 pounds, He was a healthy 7.9 pounds at birth. I kept telling his mother you need to figure out why he is not gaining wait. He didn't even double his birth weight. He was a breast fed baby which once the breast milk ran out at my house that was it till mommy got home. I know he was eating a lot at my house he just wasn't gaining weight. I stopped watching him at a year old and he only weighed 14.5 pounds. She had him to the Dr and they weren't that concerned and I was thinking what is wrong with you people you don't see that he is way off the charts? Your son is a healthy weight and active thats all. I pray it doesn't happen but if they do get called you are doing nothing wrong and they will see that. It is bogus accusations. I wish these people would go after people that actually didn't take care of there kids not good honest mommys like you. I wish you all the luck in the world to you and your family.

I am sorry to hear about your doctor! And yes, I would be shopping around. My son is 19 months. He is in the 75% for height and 10% for weight. He has never been chubby! From the day he was born he was long, lean and muscular. His doctor is a little concerned, but not overly because I was under-weight growing up as well! (as was my mom, my uncles, my grandma etc etc etc) God forbid a MEDICAL PROFFESIONAL could understand genetics huh? Just keep it up mommy and don't let this douche of a doc get to you!

You ladies are so awesome!! THank you so much!! Seriously..who needs a doctor lol! I went and bought the "Yogurt Blends" from Gerber. It says it's made with whole milk so I'm hoping he doesn't play off too many pounds :) He is a taller baby in the 98% (29inches tall) at 9 months. This doctor of his is crazy, i give him juice mixed with water and she told me not to and then gives me a form that says what he should or could eat at his stage in life and it says JUICE. Anyway, you ladies have been so helpful, my husband and I were so worried and now we feel at ease. The doctor mentioned he might be allergic to his formula and that's why he isn't absorbing it but he gained weight all of his other appointments using the same formula since a month old. I am in the works of changing his doctor. HMO's require us to wait until the first of the month. BOO! THANK YOU ALL you've really helped take the anxiety away!

Rice cereal is good for gaining weight. I've learned that oatmeal will pack on the pounds! My Marley can't eat rice, so they put her on oats. But oatmeal, rice, or barley does the trick. Couple of ounces twice a day, depending on how much fruits and baby veggies he eats. You can even mix baby foods with the rice or oats. I found that mixing different stuff with applesauce usually helps with a new food. But! A skinny baby isn't a bad thing. Just as long as he doesn't keep losing weight or looks unhealthy.

I would reccomend the Yo Baby yogurt for now. Only because it is made with whole milk so it has more of the good fats. Gerber also started making a baby yogurt. The only difference between regular and baby yogurt is that the fruit is pureed for the babies(no pieces of fruit). The Yo Baby yogurt is organic and made with whole milk, some also has cereal in it.

I hope you did decide to get a new doctor. I have had many issues like yours with my daughter Kaylee who is almost four now. Your doctor is too busy accusing you it sounds to even help you with the real problem. You need a doctor that will listen to you trust me my nephew in Iowa has lead poisioning right now and all the people involved wouldnt listen but her doctor did when i researched a medicine that he could be given. If it wasnt for a doctor that would listen my nephew would have reached the seventy and possibly have brain damage.

heres a little bit of info for when your lil one gets older based on what ive had to do....

Kaylee has been underweight her whole life and it has nothing to do with starvation lol she is four in june and is 38 inches tall and 28.7 lbs. They took all kinds of tubes of blood and ran tests and nothing is wrong with her, a high metabolism. The only thing i can say is that whole milk is more fattening so when you ween on the bottle do whole milk. Start off by 1/4 whole milk the rest formula and slowly make it to where the bottle is just whole milk over time.

Also if you still have weight issues over time into toddler years they tell you to give boost but an alternative that help saves money is carnation breakfast essentials...i buy the powder form its five bucks and you add it to milk. It is very similar to boost its like drinking chocolate milk and if you compare the labels it is good for them. Her doctor approves it as a subsitute i even drink it with her.

As the mom of three VERY different boys, I say don't freak out. You went to the lab, they are checking his blood for whatever they will. You feed him, and obviously care enough to take him to the Dr. All babies are different! You can't put everyone in a "box" and get pissed when we can't conform to "standards". My boys have always been on the low end of the chart for height, middle to low end for weight, yet off the chart for head size, lol
My oldest was a total chunk. Did start slimming down some when he got mobile, but not a whole lot until he was about 5.
My middle boy is tiny. Almost 7 and still in 4T pants. He went through a phase (about a year long) where he would eat and eat, finish his brother's plates at dinner time. Yet he's still tiny. Very active.
My youngest is almost 2 years younger than the middle boy and is the same height and only about 2 lbs less. They wear the same clothes. This is the boy with all the allergies and asthma and medical issues.

Don't let the stupid Dr. get to you. Just because they have been to all this school doesn't mean that they automaticallly know everything. Find a better Dr., one that you like. Good Luck with the move!

[deleted account]

I would try higher fat foods like avocados before I would add rice cereal to his bottle. Is he happy and developing on track? If so I wouldn't worry too much. When baby's become mobile it's harder for them to put on weight because of all the calories they burn by moving so much.

My son is 16 months, and is barely over 20lbs. My WIC office tells me he's on the verge of being underweight, but his doctor says he's just fine. The doctor says that when they begin to get mobile & walking around they tend to slim down anyways, plus me & his dad are thin and the doctor says it's just in his genetics. Is your son tall for his age, LC's height is in the 95%, so he's really tall for his age, & that spreads out some of his weight too. I got worried when my WIC office told me he was almost underweight, but the doctor reassured me that he's perfectly healthy, & that it's just in his genetics to be a skinny minnie! My baby is TALL & SKINNY, but he's healthy! Tell your doctor to shove it, Good luck on finding a new one! :o)

Your son looks so happy and healthy in the picture you have of him on here! Stuff that Dr what does she know! Sounds like you are doing what you can and his weight doesnt seem all that bad to me!

[deleted account]

You ladies are awesome and I really appreciate the advice. It's so great there's people to turn to that understand and can share their situations. It's so good to hear all of the stories. The doctor sent my little man to the lab they took 4 viles of blood..that's a lot from him. I felt so bad but he was so good he sat there still and calm, even the lab techs were like he looks normal but I'm hoping he is just small and not allergies or what not. I feed him all day he eats every 30 minutes it seems lol, seriously he eats all day. I will def get the yogurt and give it to him, i was so interested to hear that because they told me no dairy before 1 because it could cause allergies? This new mommy stuff is hard but I know just like life you learn as you go. I want to thank you all for the support and advice, to be honest I tear'd up. :) Every baby is different and if they don't fit that mold of what their chart says you're doing something horrible supposedly. It's ridiculous how sometimes the doctors cause more harm than help. WIC too..sheesh. Sorry to hear about your experience.

Definitely get a new doctor. I agree with the advice to have three meals and two snacks; in general give your child as much food as he wants, then don't worry. It's normal for weight gain to slow down when they get active and after the first year. My daughter was chubby, so she didn't gain much weight, but converted fat to muscle etc. You would notice other signs if there was something really wrong. I got the opposite lecture from a WIC nutritionist that my daughter was borderline overweight and I shouldn't force her to eat if she doesn't want to, which we never do. I know she's taller and heavier than a lot of other kids her age and totally healthy and normal, but I still couldn't stop comments like that from bothering me.

that is horrible! Sorry your Dr isn't giving advice on how to fix the issue instead. they do make baby yogurt, look at the labels where you are and see how much aspartame is in them opposed to the normal yogurt. some have no difference and it is cheaper to buy the normal yogurt. Both my kids eat the normal kind. For my first born it was baby yogurt until i saw there was no difference so i switched.
Kids lose weight like the other mothers have said, when they start getting more mobile. My friend's daughter had her 1yr appointment yesterday and she weighed 15lbs! I kid you not! The girl is tiny! My daughter is 10 months and weighs 20lbs, my son who is 2.5yrs old weighs 28lbs. My bro-in law has son who will be 1yr on the 21st and he weighs 31lbs...yes that's right he weighs more then my 2.5yr old.
Every child is different and when my son lost weight all i had to do was go back every week until he went back up in weight. the Dr advised me to use yogurt and give it to him 2 times a day. I did and it wasn't even 2 full week and he was back up again.
My Dr's have never had issues with my kids weight, the only reason there was concern when my son was 7 months is becuase he had sever reflux,it was so bad we had to change him to whole milk by 9 months(on Dr orders) and he never got sick again.
Try giving him his normal 3 meals a day and 2 yogurts a day, right before his morning nap and afternoon nap. you'll show that Dr who's a good mom!
Dr's aren't always right! You are doing amazing so don't worry. I think if a nurse was sent she would leave laughing if things were fine and i have no doubt that they are.
Good luck finding a new Dr, it's important to have one you LIKE!

[deleted account]

Maybe try adding a couple of snacks during the day or at bedtime. I wouldn't be too worried about it, his weight sounds pretty similar to my daughters and she is about the same age. She is a skinny bean, some kids just are. Maybe even look at different cereals with more sustanance to them or different fruits, etc.. you can give him. If he doesn't seem hungry and is still eating lots of bottles and food you probably don't need to worry. He will let you know if he's hungry!

[deleted account]

Thank you, and YES of course I feed him, he's my everything...our everything. I think the doctor is a loony, we've already started on the switch. We are in Roseville, Ca and moving so thank goodness we don't like her and can't wait for the switch. She just worried us by saying he didn't gain weight and even lost a few ounces in three months. I figured she's the doctor and she'd know if this was normal or even ok. Instead we got a whirl wind of verbal negative accusations. Thank you for your response :)

Thanks girls. His Doctor has threatened to turn me in to CPS because she thinks i'm not feeding him. That's why I am so worried about his weight. I mean he's so healthy, eats so good, plays, seems really advanced he grabs things, talks (dada baba) everything. His doctor said he went from 17.5lbs at 6 months and now he's 9 months and is 17.1lbs and says that's a 54% to 4% decrease. She says that I'm the problem I'm not feeding him and she wants to send a nurse out to our house and make sure we know how to feed him and check and see if we have food for him etc. I mean this woman is crazy but put the fear of God in me. I mean who would honestly think you wouldn't feed your baby??? He's 29 inches tall and weights 17.1lbs at 9 months..that's ok? Also, this yogurt you guys mentioned, is that special baby yogurt?? Or regular adult normal yogurt? THANK Y'ALL!!!

My son lost weight when he was around 7 months but it was due to formula issues. We had to start giving him yogurt which is safe at 6 months. Do not add cereal to the bottle, it will lead to poor eating habits later on. I also had to give a little girl i watched yogurt. When i was PG with my second, she moved to another sitter for 2 months and when she came back she was underweight so the yogurt made a full swing her way and in 2 weeks she was back to the weight she was before.
Good luck:)

Although he is a skinny baby, why do you NEEED him to gain? is his health at risk? If there are no problems then all the concerns are checked out and everything is fine, then he is probably weighing less because now he is an ACTIVE baby, no more staying in one place... My son was a BIG boy. . and at 6 months he weighed 21.5 lbs. . now at 11 months he weighs only 22.5 lbs..so 5 months later he weights only ONE lb more. he hasnt gained weight becasue he is so active, crawling everywhere, climbing everything and always on the go. .
How old is your baby? is he crawling and moving all over the place? What has the Doctor suggested to you to get his weight up?? maybe try him on more solids, or snacks in between his meals?
