How to get unruly 4 year old under control?

I have 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl. My oldest son, who is 4, has become very unruly and disrespectful. He never listens to anything my husband and I tell him to do. If you tell him to do something, say pick up his toys, he gets very mean and nasty. If he doesn't get his way, he'll throw nasty, and sometimes violent, temper tantrums. My husband and I have tried everything we can think of, spanking timeouts loss of priviledges, to no avail. We've even tried just ignoring him but that just makes the situation worse. Both of us are at the end of our rope and are considering sending him to live with his grandparents because we don't know what else to do. If anybody has been through this, please give me some feedback. I'd also would appreciate advice on how you got through it with your own child. I know it's just a phase, but I don't know how much more my husband and I can take!

My son was the same. We threw away toys, time out, smacked, ignored, EVERYTHING!!!!! I found the best thing for us was to actually have a break ourselves. We let him stay at his grandparents (we chose the stricter of them). It gave us an opportunity to let the other kids have some uninterrupted play time with us and also gave us time to just relax. He came home and was a bit better for a few days. He is at the age where he is trying to rule the roost. He is also looking for some attention too. Are you or your husband able to spend some time with him just one on one for an hour a day? Maybe that will help too.
