I've heard a few people say to take them off it by 5 months, or after 18 months! Don't know what that's based on - I think because before 5 months they forget it quickly, and after 18 months you can reason with them and external incentives work a bit better...
As a speech pathologist I'd say try to stop it by 1, and definitely limit it to sleep time only. When we got rid of my daughter's we just reduced the time she had it for a few days, then went "cold turkey", and it didn't take long for her to forget it. She was only 4 months though.
Maybe introducing another comfort object (liked a fluffy toy) that you are happy for your little one to keep as long as they like might ease the transition...
Good luck!

you could try cutting the end off it, or telling them it fell in the toilet and it's gone now. Although at 7 months I don't think the second option would work.

Some go as 9 with a dummy but my daughter stopped at 1 year. I started giving her drinks in a cup instead of a dummy and when there a other children drinking in cups, she refused her dummy opting for a cup. it eventually stopped and had to do it slowing and not forcing her to drop the dummy immediately.
