"My apologies if I'm repeating this thread but this issue is serious and I think we need to spread the word. This happened to one of our Jul07 mommies and it's important that everyone be warned of the potential danger. I'm pasting her post.

I am writing this to inform you of some potential dangers with Hyland's Teething Tablets. My DH and I just returned from the ER with our 5 month old LO. Please excuse any syntactical and grammatical errors in this post as I haven't been to sleep in over 36 hours.

Prior to purchasing Hyland's, I did research and spoke to a physician about the safety. Everything I read online, including personal experiences on BC, indicated that it was safe. I was highly concerned about the Belladonna Hyland's contains. All the websites that exist reviewing the product RAVE about it. I decided to use it. We gave our LO the recommended dosage on the days that he was having a hard time teething. We NEVER gave him more than the suggested amount. He never had a problem until last night.

We purchased a new bottle to keep upstairs. We used this bottle for the first time yesterday. We gave him a dose during the early afternoon and then one at around midnight. At 1 am he began to toss and turn in his bed. He was very restless but never cried. I picked him up and offered him the breast. He refused to nurse. He didn't fuss or make a sound but was WIDE AWAKE. My DH took him downstairs to rock him and he continued to move constantly. It was like he was moving involuntarily. My DH brought him up to me again and I noticed that his pupils were dilated. He could not focus on either of us. He kept looking around. He wanted to touch every thing and was fascinated with his hands and our clothing.

He appeared to be having a petite mall seizure and exhibited other anticholinergic effects that you typically see when someone is "tripping" on LSD or other street drugs. Because he would not cry, coo, babble, smile, or anything we decided to take him to the ER. He had not slept, had a wet diaper, nor nursed in 14 hours.

I will try to keep this brief. My son experienced Belladonna poisoning from the recommended dose of Hyland's Teething tablets. The preliminary tests they did on random samples of tablets in the bottle we were using showed a variance of 50 to 1000% of belladonna. The national poison control center stated that they are seeing more and more of this and they are trying to get stores to stop carrying this product.

I have never posted a single post or thread suggesting to anyone how to raise their children. I have my opinions on many of the topics that cause controversy but I have never posted that I think you should BF or FF or Vax or anything else. I firmly believe that we are all in the best position to make informed decisions about our children's care. However, I was certain that this product was safe and it isn't.

Even if you have used it and had success does not mean that the next bottle isn't going to be toxic to your child. This product is not regulated by the FDA or any other organization so there is no way to know how much belladonna is in each tablet regardless of what the bottle says.

My son could have died if ingested any more of this product. Please take the necessary precautions. No amount of sleep for you or your child is worth the potential of going through what we just experienced.

He is still slightly out of it and isn't responding as usual but he is coming around. After flushing his system he finally wet a diaper. He is drinking enfalyte (the infant version of pedialyte). I am a EBF and very strict about not giving him anything else but it is the only thing he will take and it is the only way to get him to pee. After each diaper he wets he seems to get somewhat more like the our baby.

Please don't take this thread as anything other than a concerned parent attempting to give you information. I hesitated posting this because of all the drama that we have had on this board. I do not wish to anger or cause anyone to feel the need to debate. I respect everyone's opinion. Thank you for your time.

Here is a link that can provide you some information regarding belladonna's harmful effects.

Whoever told you this may not know but homeopathic remedies are not harmful. The remedies are created by taking a small amount of the main ingredient and this is diluted over and over again until there is not even a molecule of the original substance left. This is done because they theory is that water has memory and it can stimulate the body into healing even if none of the original substance is used. This is why some people may refer to homeopathy as a placebo. :) If it is a placebo it is one that I love, because it works :D You can get all of the info I just gave ya online anywhere!

I agree with Tracey. Homeopathic remedies ARE safe. Hylands ARE safe. This is just some story going around with a lot of mistruths in it.

Hi,

Just to let you know that Hylands are a homeopathic brand and therefore do not contain Belladonna in its true form, if you check out Hylands website they have actually posted about this "story" that is going around, Hylands is FDA regulated, and also the American Association of Poison Control Centre has received NO reports of any adverse reactions to Hylands Teething tablets, I just wanted to let you know this and I don't want to offend anyone but homeopathic remedies are safe, you cannot overdose on them, I just hope this story hasn't scared people into not giving their children these tablets, yes belladonna in its true form is dangerous but not in homeopathic form.

It is very true, some mother told me they refuse to use Orajel, because you can over dose a baby. I told her you can over dose a child on any medication if you do not follow the instructions! With every thing parents should be reading up on the product before given to their child and never give the child more then the recommended amount!

Wow! I just bought a new bottle!! And why are they Behind the pharmacy counter at Target if they're all natural??! Well we have to be careful with everything, even orajel. My SIL told me about a friend of hers, her son must've swallowed the orajel and couldn't breathe! So just think about everything...

Thank God it wasn't your son, I must of missed that. I am not saying what you said was wrong. I am saying this post bothered me so i did research as well and talked to my kids doctors. I guess when it all comes down to it, we must all just use our mothers intuition! I must say every time I give my kids the teething tablets I think of this post. I try to just rely on what has helped my kids before and how many times they have had it and bottles they have gone through in the past. It has always seemed to help my kids. I feel for this mother what she went through! I hope she gets some answers to her sons health. It is not a easy job being a mom, we will all be full of worries forever!

Like i said...this did not happen to my son, it is only something i found on a website. I did buy the tablets for my son and gave him a few doses...he just cried and screamed and seemed worse than he was before giving him the tablets. So, i did research and this is what i found. I stopped giving the tablets to my son after reading this ..just to prevent it from happening. So, this is only something i have read about someone else's child. I just wanted to put it out there in case anyone else has had a problem with the tablets. I'm not saying that the tablets arent good...but after researching the belladonna and everything i just don't feel safe giving them to my son. But, if someone else wants to and they feel safe doing it then fine.

I called poison control and talked to them about the Hylands teething tablets. I was very scared after hearing about your poor son. Between my two kids from 2 months till now, I have used about 5 bottles of teething tablets. They said they have and parents call in saying their child just ingested a whole bottle. Poison control said babies would have to ingest 3 bottles to get a high doses of Belladonia in them and probably still would be fine. They said the amount is so small that a child could eat a whole bottle and be fine. I also called my doctor, he said your son may of had a allergic reaction to one of the ingredients. Also, just because it is not FDA approved, any baby product has to be approved by some liable source before going on the market. He said if you google anything including infant Tylenol, it will give you pros and cons. Maybe you should have your son allergy tested? Also are you sure it was the teething tablets that gave him this reaction? Maybe what you thought was teething was something else? I really don't want to scare you, but maybe talk to your doctor about this. I hope your son is doing well!

Thank you :) Just trying to prevent this from happening to someone else's child. It's pretty scary stuff. And, it says it's all natural! well, it is, ..but it's natural stuff that people wouldnt normally give their children. I don't know what's wrong with the people that make this stuff...why on earth would they knowingly put this in something that we give our children. Ugh, disgusts me!

I was also worried a bit about them. If you google each ingredient individually you will be very suprised at what is in it. Things used to make drugs, caffine etc etc. Why would you give your child caffine at any time not to mention when your trying to get them to sleep.

Great post April, glad you found it and re posted it :)

I also found that the Orajel teething SWABS worked the best! Maybe try those instead. I hope your little one is back to normal soon!

Yes, please read up on that stuff. Just think about the movie practical magic. If you haven't seen it, small story short she gave him a small dose and he would pass out. Worst later in the movie they gave him a bigger dose even though it wasn't much and he died! Why would they put belladonna in something we give to our children, if enough is consumed (just a small amount) for adult can put them to sleep even worse death.
