Even though your baby still fits weight wise, if he is too long its time for a new one. Convertable carseats are great. Some things to keep in mind when buying a new car seat.
1. Is it convertable
2. Does it have its own harness? if it doesnt, its for an older child.
3. is it heavy/bulky? This can be a problem if you have to switch vehicles ever.
4. How easy is it to clean?
5. How easy is the harness to unbuckle with one hand? Believe me, this will come in handy when your child is a little older..your hand is full of stuff and all you want to do is unbuckle so he/she can climb out to get out of the car.

Hope this helps! Good luck with a new car seat!

It should tell you the maximum weight and height somewhere on your car seat. The majority go to 22lbs and as long as your babys head has at least an inch between it and the top of the car seat it will be fine. Research different brands of new carseats to help find one that will work for you. A convertable one would be the way to go now because your baby needs to be rear facing until at least 1 and 20lbs and it is much better if you keep them rear facing as long as possible. When you go to buy one take it out to your vehicle and make sure you can get it to fit properly. Some car seats don't always fit snugly in certain vehicles. Your local fire department should be able to help with the fit if you are unsure.

you can buy a convertible that RF and FF he needs to RF until at least 1yr the longer the better but notbefore 1yr and with his current seat aslong as he hasn't hit the weight limit he's fine as long as he has at least 1in of the car seat above his head

as long as you get a convertable carseat and continue to rear face your child you can switch. my son went into a convertable rear facing at about the same age and weight as yours now. he is now 20 months, 25 lbs and rear facing until he is at least two (been proven safer!)

I didn't move my daughter to a convertible car seat until she was already a year. She wasn't near the weight limit yet, but they say that is all that matters is the weight and the height isn't a big deal. My daughter is almost 14 months old now and she is still sitting backwards in her convertible car seat. So the car seat can be turned around forward when she is ready. So you can get one of those and it allows for more leg room, but keep him sitting backwards as long as you can. I think they have even changed the law here in my state to keep kids backwards until they are 2 even.. so we will see. Either way.. more leg room, get a convertible car seat but keep him backwards as long as you can.. its been proven to be safer!

I think each car seat gives you the maximum height and weight. It doesn't matter where their legs are in the car seat, it's their head. Once their head is within one inch of the top of an infant seat, they are too big. My daughter was in her infant seat until about 9 1/2 months. She wasn't too big for it, but she didn't seem to like the incline anymore (infants seats are angled back for young babies). We bought a convertible car seat (the Safety First Complete Air) because I want to keep her rear facing for as long as possible. In our seat she can stay rear facing until she is 40 lbs. If he's not too big for his seat yet you can take your time and research some car seats.

your child should not be turned around until he is 1 AND 20 lbs. You can buy a convertible car seat that is both rear and forward facing. The britax goes up to 65 lbs. It is a great investment. If you want more info on safety for car seat installation and what not I would love to share. let me know! The Lord bless your endeavors to find the right car seat for you and your baby boy. God Bless!

There should be a sticker on the side of your car seat with the weight and height that it supports up to... most infant seats go up to 20 pounds. If you think he would be better in a bigger seat though, go with the convertible one!

I switched my daughter to a convertible seat at about 7 months. She wasn't really outgrowing her infant seat, but she was just too heavy for me to carry in the carrier. The convertible seats face rear and forward and are good for 5lbs-40 or 50lbs (depending on the brand). After they outgrow that they go into a Turbo Booster until you choose to take them out.
