I work sporadically, so I only need a sitter for about 2hrs in the afternoon, and mabye some Saturdays. i don't want to pay for a full week at a daycare, but it would seem to be the cheep way to go. I had someone through our church watch my son twice, and for a half a day cost $70 bucks... and it seemed like she sat on the couch the whole time. Is this normal??

can you not find another mum that works the odd days to you, so that you can have her children on your days off and she can have yours??? Its free! i know quite alot of moms that do this. Then you can probably just get a baby sitter for a saturday.

There is another calculator online: http://www.care.com/child-care-babysitte...

I've only had sitters babysit at night after my girls are in bed so essentially they are just listening to a monitor but I pay $6 an hour to a 15 year old (my daycare provider's daughter) and $12 an hour to a college graduate. (I made $12 an hour plus health insurance when I used to be a full time nanny after I graduated from college.)

"If you just want a 'grandma' type person or a younger unqualified person you can pay them between $6-8 per hour. Make sure that if you are hiring an unqaulified babysitter, in the best interest of your child, pay for them to do a first aid course..in emergency child aid."

I hate when people say this. I am very qualified a mother of 2 and I will babysit for $5 an hour, if the family wants to pay more they can I am not going to stop them, and I will cook dinner, clean up dinner and play with the children

i don't really think that sitting on the couch is how someone should babysit. i used to babysit a lot when i was in college and you should have someone who will interact and play games with your child. 70 is really steep for half a day i think you should advertise for a babysitter and work out a price that suits you. i think if you get a responsible teenager they'd be happy to get whatever you want to give them. hope this helps =)

Over here parents must be generous cause if I convert my 'normal' babysitting pay into dollors it $16 per hour! and I dont even ask for that, they just give it me :) But Gwyn, $70 for half a day is outrageous! thats £43 for half a day, gosh! we dont even pay that for a full day in a nursery.

See now by that calculator you'd have to be paying me $13 per hr :) thats obserd. Im in UK where I know its diff, but I am a qualified childcarer, with first aid etc..and used to babysit for the nursery kids where I worked. The going rate was £6 per hour which converts to just over $9 an hour where you are. If you want someone qualified then you will be looking at paying the going rate, plus fuel to get to you if needed. If you just want a 'grandma' type person or a younger unqualified person you can pay them between $6-8 per hour. Make sure that if you are hiring an unqaulified babysitter, in the best interest of your child, pay for them to do a first aid course..in emergency child aid.

Advertise in your local paper shop or grocery store, or in the papers. State what you need exactly and how much your willing to pay...you may find a childcare student snaps it up :)

It depends on where you live but in the midwest, it's normal to pay a minimum of $8 an hour to someone that drives themselves to and from your house. If you expect any help with housework or cooking, pay more. Here's a good website to calculate a standard babysitting rate: http://www.babysitting-rates.com/calcula...

If you're having trouble finding someone, consider posting something on a college campus in your area. You may get an early childhood or elementary education major that would love the part time work. :)

I was always told that is is suposed to be $4 an hour per child. That is what I charge and sometimes I just take what ever they give me. If the kids were good then I don't charge much at all expecally if they were sleeping. If it was far away from my house I would charge alittle for gas.

Well I babysit and one family pays me 10 an hour for one child while the other pays about 9 an hour for 3 children. I will useually charge about 5 an hour for one kid, your babysitter should not be just sitting on the couch she should be playing with your child. So I am assuming its about 10 hours a week plus saturdays? how long on saturday? I would charge probably 50 for the week then however many hours for the saturday. You can find someone who will work with you in price I am sure. I hope I helped.

baby sitting rate is only about 8-10 bucks an hour i believe. so measure by that. baby sitters are just that, they sit and watch your child. if you want anything further, like for them to teach your baby, you should probably go the day care route.
