induced labor or natural labor?

just curious really has anyone had a birth that was induced with a drip and a natural birth and is it true that overall births that are induced with the hormone drip tend to be more painful than if you go naturally?

i had always heard that getting induced was so much more painful because it speeds up the process. i was induced and i loved it. i felt no pain at all and i liked knowing what was going to happen before it actually did. i got an epidyrl after a few hours because im a chicken when it comes to pain, but everything moved really fast and it wasnt anything like i thought it was going to be. some of my friends who have gotten induced liked it as well. everyone is different and is going to have different experiences.

And again, it all depends on the woman. My 2nd Girls was 40+4, my water broke but no contractions, so they induced and it was a nightmare. My 3rd one was 39+0 and a scheduled induction because of numerous issues and it was almost like a walk in the park.

OK what Laura says makes perfect sense. It does have to do with how ready your body is. My girls were ready to come but my son was 1wk before his due date and he had to come out because he did have any space left in the womb, he wasnt moving so the doctor scheduled the induction and it was the worst of all three labors. Thanks Laura, that does explain a lot :)

But making the body accept the hormone when it's not ready yet can cause the body to fight it.
When a body is ready to go into labor it does it on it's own, and when we try to make it do it earlier then it's ready there can be more pain, more stress for both mom and baby, more complications, and more problems.
Pregnancy, labor, birth, and breastfeeding are natural parts of a womans bodies life cycle and when we try to mess with the system it can make things worse.

Inductions are rarely necessary, but often impatiens doctors will push for them because it's more predictable and easy for the dr to know when you will be needing their care, drs can be selfish and want you to birth on their schedule so many will exagerate a simple thing to try to convince you to induce.

I can honestly tell you that I had three induced labors... :) My cervix just does not open an my water will not break during active labor so they have to induce with the Pitocin drip. I can honestly say that the girls were not that bad at all... I didnt even use the epidural. But when my son was born they did a vaginal as well as a drip induction because they had to get him out... That was the worst thing I had to go through. I think if I had him first I wouldnt have anymore children...LOL (not ture we still want one more :) )

No. no scientific proof to back that. The body in labor naturally, produces oxytocin, that is used to ripen cervix and help progress labor. induction just means that they will give u pitocin, the man made equivalent of the oxytocin, it is all just a frame of the mind

Number 1 was a C-Section and I got induced with number 2 and 3. Number 2 was a nightmare. It took forever and it was soooooooooo painful (I was at just 2cm and had just 10 seconds in between each extremely strong contraction). Number 3 was great and almost not painful at all, it just felt like stronger Braxton-Hicks. Don't get yourself worked up, every woman is different and so is every delivery. Just see what happens and go with it.

seems you got your answer. I was induced with both labors and wouldn't do it any other way yes it hurts more but for LESS TIME! natural you gotta wait for your body to make the hormones and start acting and all the time you are still in pain I rather pain for shorter time than pain for however long my body decides to take....

I was au natural. I was given petocin because I was only 1 cm when my water broke. After 8 hours of that I was still only 1 cm so they upped my petocin and gave me an epidural. Another 4 hours I was dilated 4 cm then for the last 6 I didn't dilate any more and they did a c-section because my pelvis was too small for her to come out.

I did not want to be induced with my son. But that all changed when i got puppps. They were very painfull. and i could not stop itching them. My whole tummy and legs were covered in them. After going through over a month of dealing with that, i just wanted him out and the itching to stop. When i went into the hospital i was already 3cm dialated. They broke my bag of water. Then i started on the pitocin. I was fine and then BAM! the contractions came hard and strong!! They made me lose my breath cuz they were so bad. So i needed an epidural. The doc who gave me my epidural did an awesome job. I could still move my legs. I swear i could of got up and starting walking around. lol. But the nurses wouldnt let me. But we are planning for another baby and i plan to not be induced this time. My labor was a total of 6 hours. I had a third degree laceration down there. OMG that hurt soo bad! But being on the pitocin made my heart beat so fast that they had to put a monitor on my sons head to try and tell the heartbeats apart, but they still couldnt determine whos was whos. so no induction for me. Unless it is an emergency.

I was induced with both kids. My first was not "induced" in a way where I could have a natural birth so I had the pain meds in the IV. Basically my first the dr broke my water.

My second labor, that I DID have a natural (NO pain meds) labor went like this...They induced me the night before with Cytotec, a pill that they inserted an extreemly low dosage (Typically it takes 3 or 4 doses to even feel much is going on). I had one dose, things slowed down so the dr tried to break my water (as I was scared of the potocen), the dr couldn't get it, but poked a very small hole in it. Then becuase they tried to break my water they ended up moving onto the Potocen drip. They VERY slowly increased it. They kept asking how I felt, and to be honest it felt like the BH contractions that were just a little stronger. I could walk, and wasn't in enough pain to even think about pain meds. Then at 1pm my water broke/exploded, Shortly I started pushing (pushed for 17 min), and had the baby at 1:32pm.

My first labor was by far more painfull. I believe it was the way the dr went about inducing. If I had a chance to go back I would not have my water broken that early in the game. If you can slowly get things going you can easily manage the pain.

Also, I felt AMAZING right after having the baby when I didn't have the pain meds. If your talking about induction ask how they do it. Every dr does it differently.

With my first I went in at 5 cm dilated and they gave me pitocin and broke my water anyway, I was doing fine with the labor till that point, that's when it started getting really painful. I told them before hand I didn't want any meds, but through the whole thing they kept asking me if I wanted stadol so finally I took it 10 min before she was born.

My second I went in at 7 cm dilated and again they gave me pitocin anyway. I was not feeling horrible pain till they gave me the pitocin and broke my water. Again I ended up taking the stadol about 5 min before I started pushing. As a side note.. it would have been nice if they told me I had less then 30 min before she would be here and I probably would have said no to the meds.

With my third, they sat me in triage for an hour and a half because I didn't "Look like I was in labor" even though I told them I had very rapid deliveries. Finally they took me to a room and said they would be back in a little bit to check how dilated I was, put me on pitocin and break my water. The entire time my husband and I were just talking and joking back and forth. She was gone about 15 min, I had one really hard contraction, laid back to close my eyes and rest for a moment and next thing I knew I felt a gush of water and a head coming out. The nurse ended up just BARELY delivering the baby (my husband honestly thought he was about to have to on his own.) But that third time was the least pain I felt giving birth.

I am pregnant now with my last baby and will be going to a birthing center to avoid the doctors putting me on pitocin and breaking my water for me Without pitocin I didn't need pain relief, with it I wasn't dealing well with the pain at all
.

My first was induced he ended up being a bit to big he came down to fast then become stuck. There was a lot of fast work needed to get him out. My second came down fast as well I did not need to be induced the water broke gradualy so that was differant the labour was faster in compairison too more painful until I was put on the epideral. Both I was on epiderals my first was 8 lbs 15 oz my second 8 lbs 10.5 ounces.

I went into labour naturally but it wasn't progressing and 36 hours after my waters broke they had to give me the drip to speed things up. I had wanted a natural birth with just the tens or gas and air for pain relief but when I gave consent for the drip the midwife warned me that 'most' women ask for/need an epidural as it makes the contractions very strong very quickly. I managed about an hour and a half with the drip before I couldn't cope any more and asked for the epidural. It was the best decision I ever made, if I hadn't had that I would have been far too exhausted to push and would have needed a c-section. The minute it went in the pain was gone and I got 4 hours sleep! I was then able to have a 'normal' birth with only a small tear and 6 stitches. Although it went nowhere near to plan I wouldn't change it, and this time (anywhere in the next 6 weeks;) ) my plan is to go with the flow. The thing to remember is that the midwives do this every day and wouldn't advise these things if they weren't necessary. After all, the birth doesn't really matter, it's the beautiful new baby you get at the end that's important!

My first child came way too fast, couldn't get epidural/spinal...just old fashioned natural childbirth, and yes it hurt bad! My second child was induced, but they just broke my water and that was it...but I had a spinal.
My 3rd pregnancy was twins and I went into labor early (water didn't break, just contractions) and they couldn't stop it...but had enough time to put in a spinal. All 3 deliveries went pretty quick for me. Only lasted maybe 3 hours.

My first was natural, my next 2 were induced. I actually thought the induction births were A LOT easier. They went so fast, only a couple hrs of actually feeling contractions. I never even felt anything until they broke my water. (Had my water broke for all 3). My last one born a week ago was the easiest of them all, and he was 8lb 8oz which was over a pound bigger than the others. I didn't think the pitocin hurt at all but that's just me.

I'm a mom of 2 great kids and both of my births were completely natural. Absolutely no drugs of ANY kind b/c I would not give anything to my babies. My son was my 1st and he was 5 days late, but my daughter was 2 weeks late. I REFUSED induction! I wasn't about to do that b/c I had heard horror stories and I wanted another natural birth like my 1st. When I was pregnant the 1st time my husband & I took a childbirth class that teaches you how to breathe through the pain and let your body work like it should. It also provided us with knowledge of what happens during each stage of labor. This is extremely helpful! My advice is to have a birthplan that you give to the nurses at the hospital when you check in and also a copy for your file with your obgyn. This will make things go smoother because they will be aware of your expectations and won't try to force anything on you in the heat of the moment.

Unless it is medically necessary, do NOT let anyone break your water. What they don't tell you is not only can it make things difficult, but it also allows germs into the body that can affect the baby. It can also actually stop labor and this is why many women end up with c-sections. During my 1st birth, my water broke just before I began to push and the 2nd time, my water broke as my daughter crowned. The bag of waters actually helps you dilate fully because it pushes down on your cervix and it can minimize tearing. I had 2 stitches the 1st time and none the 2nd. And one of the best things you can do is labor at home for as long as you can before going to the hospital or birthing center. This will give them less time to try and talk you into stuff b/c you are vulnerable when in pain. I wish you luck & a happy, healthy baby!

I was induced with my daughter because she was 8 days late and was getting big. They did the cervadil and then pitocin. With the pitocin they couldn't get a rhythm going with my contractions and so they kept turning it up. When I would contract, it would be for 5 minutes on-30 seconds to 1 minute off. I couldn't catch my breath and was in so much pain that they gave me an epidural. I dilated in 11 hours but my doc had to go do a c-section and so I had to wait to push until she was back (2 hours later). By this time my epidural was gone and they couldn't give me any more. I delivered with no medicine. I hemorrhaged after delivery and I tore so they were doing uterine massage and giving me stitches at the same time with no meds. The uterine massage was 10 times more painful than the delivery. I apparently was screaming in pain so they gave me Stadol (a narcotic drug) I was so high from that I couldn't even nurse after she was born. It was the worst feeling ever. I am hoping that next time I go into labor on my own and then I will not have to go through that again...

Son 1 was naturally labour - one hour in total
Son 2 was natural (if it can be called that) 6minute labour (YES MINUTE!!)
Son 3 - Induced at 39weeks to avoid home birth - I had my membranes ruptured and he was 5.5hours long and I swear he was the best labour EVER!!
Son 4:- Prostaglandin gel - I didnt like this form of inducemnt at all...they placed the gel at around 7:30pm and I wasnt allowed to move for an hour.
The placement of the gel was much like getting a pap smear but then it made my vagina ache and I desperatly wanted to pee!! I didnt really get a labour BUT I did get diaherria - 3 full contractions and he was born!

it would be my preference with number 5 (due in may) to be induced by membrane rupture but my docro things gel is more controllable....still "arguing" over that one!!

i was in induced with both my children and they attempted to give me pitocin and i wasn't having that. right when he broke my water i started having contractions and from start to finish my labor was 3 hours and 42 minutes. it was painful but that is child birth. the epidural eases the pain but i wouldn't allow the pitocin it makes everything worse. now when i had my daughter they also induced me and gave me the pitocin after i had told the nurse no she did anyways and it was horrible. i still had a fast labor (from start to finish 4 hours 26 minutes) but the pain was horrible. so if i was you if you do get induced dont get the pitocin unless it is absolutely necessary!

I was induced at 39 weeks with my now 3 year old boy, and i went into labor on my own at 36.6 weeks with my little girl who is now 17 months. Labor with my son, was by far worse than with my daughter. It was soooo bad. But with my daughter it was not painful at all. Like really, no pain at all. I was in full blown labor having off the charts contractions, and was not feeling a thing. The drs could not figure out why. It was great to me. My labor was going great, but not fast, and my dr was about to leave for a mission trip to Africa and we did not think i was gonna deliver before she left for the airport. They gave me a small amount of pitosin and then i felt it. It was not painful bad, but there was a small amount of pain there. But when we have our next one, i dont care if i carry over, i do not want to be induced again, EVER!!

In my opinion induced labor is more painful than natural. With my first it was natural and I was in labor for 11 hours. My second was also natural and I was in labor 18 hours. Now with my third I was way past due and I had to be induced. It was a lot more painful because the contractions just come fast and hard at you, but the upside was that I was only in labor for 4 hours. It was over with very very fast! I guess it all depends on whether you think an induction is necessary. This was my personal experience, maybe it is different for other women. Good luck!

My oldest was 11 days late and had hardly any water around him (the docs didn't believe me when I told them I had been leaking fluid) so they induced me. I didn't have the epidural or anything and it was bad, but not nearly as awful as my second. My whole pregnancy with my second was very painful though, and the doc broke my water, but the contractions were so much worse than with my oldest I finally gave in and got the epidural.
This one I'm really hoping she'll start the labor process without help, I'd really like to have the experience. As for the epidural or pain meds, I'm not sure, I'd love to go all natural, but the epidural made my second delivery so much more enjoyable. Except for the fact that afterwards sitting down was incredibly painful, I had shooting pain all through my lower back and down my legs once the med wore off. But I know I was much more cooperative once I got my epidural with my second. Still not sure which way I'll go. We'll just have to wait and see how intense it gets!

I only have one baby but from my experience adding the pitocin increases the pain A LOT!!! I had a verrrrry long labor. Honestly, looking back, I was fine with it taking awhile. I was managing my pain just fine using hot showers and back massages from my husband. After 14 hours though, the hospital pushed me to add a pitcoin drip in order to speed my labor up. After that the pain became EXTREMELY intense. I could not even focus on anything other than trying to breath. I couldn't even open my eyes . I was sobbing from the pain, but I realllly, realllly didn't want an epi. I was able to handle another 4 hours of VERY intense, very fast contractions. Then they pushed me to get an epi. Again, looking back, I should've requested to be taken off the drip rather than get meds to manage the pain the drip was causing me. But se la vie.

Anway, long story short, I'd say, if you can avoid the pitocin drip, DO IT. It is so not worth that level of pain.

Induction is more intense and painful, for sure. My eldest was a natural birth, and yes of course it hurt like crazy, but when my son went 10days overdue and I had to be induced, the labor was way more agonizing. I had the gel stuff inserted (and manipulation of cervix, yuk, that was horrible) but it didn't work, so I was put on a drip and the intense, instant, close-together contractions started, but still wasn't getting me anywhere so then had to have my waters popped. No epidural or pethidine coz the thought of needles in my back freaks me out and pethidine affects baby, and the gas was making me so nauseous I actually vomited. One of the annoying things is that they have to monitor the contractions and baby's heartbeat the entire time, so you can't move away from the bed, and even in the middle of an obvious strong contraction I had nurses pushing the monitors into my skin to pick up the data, when all I wanted was to get the scratchy velcro things off me as they were adding to my discomfort. I finally gave birth many hours later, lost a ton of blood, and then went into shock. I was shaking from my teeth down to my toes, uncontrollably, and I remember being scared to hold my newborn in case I threw him off with the shakes! None of that happened with the previous baby, and they were of similar weight (9.2lb and 9.4lb). I know all labors/births are different, but I do think induction contributed a large part to all the negatives, and if I had a choice I'd choose natural! I'm still thankful it wasn't a caesarean though. I'd choose induction over that any day.

Both my births have been induced with a drip. They tried the tape and the gel and then eventually did the 'strip and stretch'. they broke my waters and put me on the drip. Nobody informed me that it would be more intense then going into labour naturally. It went for a good 5hrs and it was pain the whole time. The contractions came in waves of 3 and even though they dulled right down, they never actually went away. I had to have an epidural halfway through for my blood pressure and it didn't work (not to mention the 6 holes the woman had to put in my back trying to get the needle in).....I had pethadine and according to my husband I went back to 'normal' straight away. The pain was still there but my head was clear. My 2nd birth was also induced and there was no way they were turning that drip on until I had an epidural (mostly for my BP but even if my bp was fine it would have been the same!). I went into a bit of shock though because I could still feel the pressure and I freaked out thinking that the epidural hadn't work again. As it turned out I went from 2cm to baby out in 2.5hrs and it was pain free. I've had friends ask me about induction and I tell them the same thing....don't do it without an epidural...it doesn't make you feel any more bonded to your baby to not have one....it just makes recovery a bit longer.

i was induced with a tablet inserted into the vagina... and then i was given the sinto (sp?) which made the contractions come faster. most people say that being induced is more painful than normal contractions. However, a small percentage of women like me... do not feel any pain at all. i was blessed not to feel any sort of pain except a minor backpain. it was a very easy birth for me being induced :)

They induced me cause i had gestational diabetes and they were worried about her getting to big. Well next time i will not be induced i dont care how big she gets i will not go through that pain again or deal with the doctors telling me what to do. But in the end it is all you decision.

I had terrible back labor because my daughter was twisted badly, so I think that I would have had a terrible time of it regardless of whether I was induced or not.

I simply went for the epidural and I was so glad I did. I had a very peaceful labor and when it came time to push, I did it like a champ and only had minimal abrasions that healed in one week. My daughter came out peaceful and happy and looking up at me with clear, intelligent eyes.

I say, the best thing to do is what works for you. There is no "best" way to give birth.

i dont know about the drip but i was induced with cervidil and i had a natural birth, it did hurt but it was my first baby so i have no idea if it was worse then a birth that wasent induce, I kept control of my labor by only allowing one dose to be given because i felt the contractions start and keep it up past when my next does was due. and i think that makes a differece in me being able to have the rest of my birth go natural, most induction drugs have a side effect of to many contractions so just remeber that you can control what goes on with your labor and ask about all the options for your induction. I also didnt allow them to brake my water once my labor was in full swing because i figured if im still in labor without medication then my body knows what to do, my daughter was doing fine and so was i so there was no need to let go of all the natural aspects. Good luck

For my oldest I had an epidural so I felt nothing. For my middle son it was natural and didn't hurt all that bad. My Labor was totally spontaneous at 39 weeks.. I was in labor for 10 hours and gave birth 100% naturally in a birth center in the area... Only pain management I had was a birthing tub and my husband. ^_^ I had a doula too and she was really helpful.
Honestly, I wasnt induced at all and it hurt a LOT... it was fast and i didn't tear at all... the period from the beginning of transition (hard labor) and her actually being here was 2 hours... only 20-30min of that was pushing, and I took that a little slowly on purpose so not to over stretch my tissues (which is what usually causes tearing) ♥
I've done a LOT of body modding and other things and have a very high pain tolerance and that was the most painful thing I have EVER been thru. I personally believe that it shouldn't have to hurt that much, induced or not. :P

I was induced with both my kids, not nice! One resulted in a c section and the other was so painfull i was scared. I had to have epidurals with both as were too painfull to handle. Im due my third in July and will not be induced even if i go a year overdue!!!! lol. I will not be examined or monitered, proded anything! im scared of the medics now, they made it hurt too much. Will be having a water birth, hypnobirth with some candles and see how that goes, so il get back to you and say after my natural birth.

I had both natural... my son just came. my daughter on the other hand i had epidural and they had to give me pitocin just so i would feel the contractions. i've been told and read alot about inducing that it is more painful and there are more risks than not ie inductions can lead to c-sections depending on if your body is ready for labor or not. I would read up on it as much as i can. due to the fact i had gestational diabetes they were going to induce fortunately for me she came a week before induction date.
good luck.

The only interference with my labor was that my water wouldnt break and I was already 9 cm. So they broke it for me, and everything else was natural, no drugs or gas, or cutting, etc.
I was almost let down, by how little my actual labor hurt. I felt like I should have nearly died, or been ripped limb from limb by wild horses, but really it was quite easy.
