a 2mo old to poop every 3-5 days? My pediatrician says it is, but I am not buying it. When she finally does go, it is an explosion. She seems to be comfortable, but the day she finally goes she is very moody. I don't think this is normal. She used to go everyday and she is on breast milk so that's why I think it is odd she doesn't go everyday.

Hi Angela! It is normal for breastfed babies to not have a bowel movement for up to a week (this was told to me by my physician when my son was a baby), although I'm sure most moms will say that their babies do generally go more than once a week! Newborns tend to go more often and can often have some stool in their diaper with every diaper change. As their digestive systems develop and "get used to" their food, it will regulate and develop a new pattern. (Think of her sleep pattern - you get used to her sleep pattern and think you have it figured out, and then it changes!) She probably gets moody because she does feel that she has the need to go, and I imagine that after she goes she feels much better and is back to her usual self. If you were concerned that she is constipated (hard rabbit like turds, difficulty passing stool, really straining) I would suggest seeing your physician or pediatrician about it, but as long as her "explosion" is not constipated, there's probably nothing to worry about. Hopefully (for you) she gets a bit more regulated as she gets a little older, and once she starts eating pablum and baby foods, you will again notice a difference in her bowel patterns. Explosions are never fun to clean up! Good luck, and hope this helps.

it happens that baby's cycles change...if it worries you think about looking at what you are eating that might be adding to this as yu are part of the equation but know that it is more common than you would think

My two year old did it from the time she was born only it was every 5-7 days. It is normal for some babies to be like that as long as they are eating and that continues to be a regular thing, I would not worry about it.

Babies feed breast milk poop less often, how often that is depends on the baby. Every baby is diffrent. My son has poop issues so my pediatrician recommended I give my son 1oz of water a day. So I buy pedialyte water with electrolytes and give him 2nd everyday to keep him hydrated and regular. If I miss a day, my son won't poop for a day or two so I know its working. My son gets mostly formula, only about 10oz of breast milk a day, so if you try this start slow, 1oz every other day, although you should see results immediately , within a hour after the first feeding, I do.

My peditircian says its normal as well. However he told me that if it bothered me that much to give my baby 2ozs of water with 1teaspoon of brown sugar. It definatley works. He said NOT to use the karo concoxion cause karo is really hard on a babys system. I hope this helped. Good luck.

Yup, it's normal. :-) Both of my kids were breastfed and didn't go everyday. My son is now 3 1/2yrs old, and he still only goes every few days. Everyone's digestive systems are different, so your baby may never be an everyday pooper. :-)

I'd say yes, based on my own experiences. I've never been to worried about it, but somethings I do do, to help them out, is I will drink more water, and I will also give them a little water every now and then. I also hold them and comfort them, on the "day"

Oh this question brings back memories of when my son was that young and not going for a few days at a time! I was always so worried about it and his doc kept telling me that it was normal. When I felt that he was feeling uncomfortable (I could usually tell), then I would use an anal thermometer to stimulate his anal glands and he would then go.........and seem to feel much better! May be better left alone, but I knew that his little tummy was hurting and he was a happy baby after I'd do it.

if soley breast fed it can be completely normal every baby is different but watch for starting solids because constipation usually occurs so once on solids do not let her go more then 2-3 days (advice from health direct I let my little one go a week thinking breast fed babies dont get constipated and she was in alot of pain)

Hi Angela,

It's actually really normal breast-fed babies to go longer times without pooping because they're absorbing all of the mom's milk because it's more nutritious. I have two boys and my (21 months and 2 months) and my youngest has gone as long as 9 days and has been perfectly fine. The older they get the more regular it becomes. Hope this helps!

btw my daughter was breast fed the first 2-3 months and then did formula for the most part after that...if the dr is not worried about it, I wouldnt be. That is how my first daughter was.

Yes it's totally normal for a breastfed baby! You're doing a great job mama!

Oh, and don't worry about the explosion. My breastfed baby goes everyday (that's just his thing) and it ALWAYS sounds like an explosion lol

When my son was little, his record for days without poo was 15! Apparently this is very normal for breastfed babies, and it just means that they are getting and using everything they need from your breast milk, and there is very little solid waste that needs to come out. So long as they are still weeing regularly, going up to a month without a poo is not a cause for concern. Enjoy the poo free nappies while you can!

The reason she isnt pooping is because breastmilk is so pure that she is absorbing it n has very little left to poop. Atleast that is how my midwife explained it when I asked her the same thing. My youngest is 10 mo n still doent go every day. I think her bowel movements will depend on what u eat.

At about 6-7 months old. But I am not sure it is normal for shared fed babies, I am a counselor in La Leche league, so I am not an expert in formula fed babies (even if it's only a couple of times a day), I think you should get a second opinion from another pediatrician, as far as I know it only applies to exclusively breastfed babies.

She gets formula a couple times a day, if that. The pediatrician knows that I also give her formula and she still says it is ok for her to go every couple days. She went last night and it actually wasn't too bad of an explosion. When should her bowels regulate?

It is completely normal for an EXCUSIVELY BREASTEFED child to spend up to 8 days without going, she is not constipated it's just her bowels maturing, it's as you said an explosion after a couple of days, so be prepared, pack extra clothes for her, enough wipes to wall paper the white house, and an extra shirt for you. As I said before, this is only normal if she is only breast feeding, if she takes formula it is very dangerous and you should take her to the doctor.

Depends on the baby. My son is 6 months old and would go 5-6 days but was overly fussy, uncomfortable, and grumpy. This started about the time I added formula once a day. Come to find out he is allergic to milk and more then likely soy. Each child is different. I know of some kids that is perfectly normal for. Maybe try cutting dairy out of your diet for a few weeks. If this is something you believe is not right then dont stop talking to the dr about it untill they listen. Good luck!

Absolutely.

I love this commercial:

At around six weeks many breastfed babies start going every few days. But of course, the poo explosion is what often ensues.
