Is it normal for bleeding after the umbilical cord falls off?

It's normal. It happened with my daughter, but not my son. It seems to be irritation from clothes and diapers. Just keep it clean with water and petroleum jelly.

plz help me also.....me too much worried abt my son's umbilical cord bleeding....he is 21 days old....his umbilical cord fall off on 5 th day....it remained dried for 1 week ,then it started with once a day umbilical ooze .....we got his bld tests done ....which are normal......kindly share ur experience till how many days it may bleed normally

That is totally fine. As long as it does not look infected or is visibly bleeding it is fine.

Our son was 7 days when his came off, and it was grren and gooey underneath. 3 pediatrician appointments later, they finally decided it had came off too early and needed to be cauterized. It continued to bleed a bit (I'd see it on the diaper or shirt) even though we'd roll his diaper down like a teenage girl rolls her shorts LoL, and they cauterized two more times beofer it finally healed. We were told to rub the outer area with an alcohol pad, but not the actual belly button, because the alcohol will kill the bacteria needed for it to heal properly. He was 7 weeks old before we were able to give him a real bath! make sure not to immerse her in water until she is fully healed! Good luck!! (:

this happened with my daughter, hers fell off on day 6 after a little help the day b4 from my darling toddler so i was really conerned. i had already called the hospital when her brother pulled on it and was told it should be ok unless it was bleeding. so i called back and they said it was normal. i then got my child nurse to check as i was still concerned and she told me it was normal as long as it didnt get smelly or start getting a pussy disharge and i continued to clean it and keep it dry. shes now 17 days old and its only now dried out properly. but if your not sure or worried get some1 to take a look at it for you

It can reopen so just make sure its not a lot or doesnt last for too long.

Just be careful when cleaning the stump. If it doesn't heal or is pink and swollen go to ur dr. My son's did that and he ended up with a small hernia. Good luck

yea i panicked cause one of my twins came off and was bit gooey but no blood and her sisters came off while i was drying her but was bleeding and did for quite a few days but spoke to midwife and apparantly normal! hop this helps

My baby's umbilical cord fell off and was bleeding. My doctor said as long as her skin wasn't red and inflamed it was totally normal. I had to use resolve on her onsies when they went in the wash, but it stopped before she was a month old.

My little mans still had the clamp on it when we were released from hospital 36 hours after he was born. The doctors choice not mine! But the health nurse was due in two days and would take it off.The day before she came over the clamp got caught and the cord fell off.
I showed the health nurse and she said that some blood is normal for a while but anything yellowy or seeping you need a doctor..Clean it with cooled boiled water and cotton wool and nothing else. It will be fine in a week or so!

My daughters umbilical cord fell off at 3 days and was bleeding and we had the same problem. (it was even a bit smelly and left blood stains on some of her onesies) My Dr. told us to just clean it with water and mild soap and to let air get at it. As long as it's just crusty dry blood and not flowing freely you should be fine. It was panic inducing for me... typical new mom I was afraid my girl was going to bleed out...

Are you using hydrogen peroxide to clean it with? If you are, stop.

I would consult her doctor next.

Just keep it clean and wait it out. it's normal that your baby's umbilical cord fell off and is bleeding, my son had the same thing. I just kept cleaning it off with a wet q-tip at diaper changes and gently with baby soap at bath time. I was told not to use alcohol on it because it can irritate the skin. try folding in the top of the diaper so it doesn't rub against it.

My daughter stump fell off when she was 6 days old. I think it fell off early. It was gooey underneith when it came off. I just put alot of alcohol on it for a while, eventually it started to look normal. My sons came off when he was 2 weeks old. His was completly dry and normal looking when it came off. I showed my daughters belly button to the doctor and she said it was normal just to keep it clean.
