My oldest son had acid reflux disorder and he would throw up about 3/4 of all the food/milk he ate. We had to put rice in his bottles, every feeding, to make them thicker and help the milk stay in his stomach. We never had any problems, but I definately agree, make sure you supervise so there is no risk of choking.

Rice cereal may be added to a bottle inorder to thicken the formula for babies with really bad reflux, in that case the benifits outweight the risks. However when ever you add cereal to the bottle you are running the risk that baby may asperate (breath in) rice particles and choke. If baby gets these fine particles in their lungs it can lead to resperatory problems, infections and pneumonia, and like other's said it usually has no effect on how long they sleep so the risk is not worth the possible benift. All children learn to sleeo through the night at some point, regardless of what they eat. My oldest finally started sleeping through the night consistantly when he was about 5 (yes 5 years old) but my second started sleeping 10hr stretches at 6 weeks. We did nothing different with the 2 of them, they both ate the same diet (breastmilk) had the same bedtime rutine, even the same crib, the only thing that mattered was the childs personality. my DS needed me close to him and DD was more independant and could put herself back to sleep.

i put rice cereal in my youngest sons bottle it was to try and get more sleep it really didnt work and i put it in his bottles b/c he got sick alot and that helped. his doctor was the one who told me to do it.the doctor told me it really wont help the baby sleep longer at nite and he was right. but all babies are different and it may work for you.

I think it's ok to put it in a bottle. Just be sure to not mix it like the box says too....it will be wayyy too thick. Just add a little and shake it up. But, do make sure you try spoon feeding the cereal too so your baby learns to eat real food. My doctor told me not to do it, but i did anyway. He told me not to but turned around and switched my son's formula to added rice. The added rice formula made it so my son couldnt poop..so we had to switch it back and i added my own cereal to it. I could regulate the amount i put it in and he had no problems at all. Playtex drop ins bottles even make a nipple just for cereal. Hope this helps
