Hi my daughter is ten months old and has been exclusively breast fed (no formula). She eats three solid meals and two snacks a day. She only wants the breast for like five minutes a few times a day. I need to go back to work to help my husband support our family and my medals pump is broken. Can I start weaning her to cows milk now? I know breast is best for at least one year but realistically can I?

Thank you girls for your advice! Rachael I definitely plan to continue breastfeeding her at night and when I'm home. I just hope my breasts don't become engorged but I have a hand pump so I will take that to work with me. Can't believe my meddle broke after 3 months!

try to pump, I know it seems like alot of work, but breast really is best! what you may be able to do if she is a good eater is to breast feed at wake up, before and after daycare, and then at bedtime. While at daycare she can have water, formula, or pumped milk until she reaches 1 yr when it is recommended to introduce cows milk. I wouldn't rush into weaning at 1 either.

I wouldn't wean onto a bottle... that is just something else you will have to wean off of in a very short period of time. Start with a sippy cup and then onto a regular cup.

I was breastfeeding with 3 solids plus 3 snacks until 10 months aslo, then i started weaning him onto a bottle, half cows milk half breastmilk. By 11.5 months I had him on cows milk only. If she eats good wholesome meals and gets all the nutrients she needs she should be fine.

My daughter rejected my breast when she was a month old so we've been giving her formula. Her one-year check-up, her pediatrian told us that we should be weaning her off formula and giving her cow's milk because of the milk fat to help her weight gain. She also said that realistically, most parents start their babies on cow's milk around 9 months.

It's not recommended until 12 months of age. I think this is a question for your pediatrician. Personally I would invest in a new pump and offer breast milk until 12 months and then switch to whole milk. Good luck!

I would check with your pediatrician. Cow's milk doesn't have the nutrients that breast milk does. I have a medela hand pump that was only $30 and worked great.

i switched my daughter from formula to milk at 11 months. just make sure it is homo milk as babies need the fat for brain developement. hope this helps!

I can't really tell you either way. I do know some people who made the switch at that age, and their kids are fine. My kids on the other hand, were allergic to cows milk until they were one or older. Ultimately, you are the mom and it is your decision, and it is up to you if you think she is eating enough of a variety of foods to get the nutrition she needs. Also, if you do decide to switch, I would recommend you give her a good multivitamin if she isn't already on one.
