I recommend you read "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" by the La Leche League. YES you can get pregnant while BFing and before your first period, but if you are BFing on demand (day and night) exclusively for the first 6 months you have a 97-98% chance of not ovulating (that's as good as the pill or just a condom). If you go back to work and are pumping the stats go down (doesn't release as much of the hormone that prevents ovulation). Mother nature doesn't really want you to get pregnant again while you are still BFing, other mammals don't, but of course most of western society does not BF exclusively or long enough....

The chances apparntly are alot less, but you might get your period anytime (just because your breastfeeding doesnt mean you wont get your period). You ovulate approx two weeks before you get your period, so if you wait until you have ur period to use protection it could be to late and ull already have gotten pregnant. Thats what iv read and understood anyway. hope it helps. :)

not entirely true. less likely, but still possible. Just because I didn't while nursing my son does not mean I want another one now. lol. So, still plan on being careful after this baby gets here. I had no period for 15 months after giving birth. Took four more months[19 months of sex] to get pregnant. But, I know a lady who had no periods and got pregnant two months after giving birth.

i did twice. I breast fed on demand and had no periods but at 10 weeks pregnant again. So did my mum and loads of friends of mine. Dont trust that method of contraception, i dont believe it works :)

If you cant get pregnant while breastfeeding then why do some breast feeding women have stair step children and will tell you that they breastfed them all? My mom nursed both my brothers and theyre 13 months apart.

It's God's method of birth control. But it isn't foolproof. Especially when the nursing slows down. I wouldn't push the issue if I were you....

It is not true, it completely depends on the individual. There are women that get pregnant a week after they have a baby even though they are nursing.

It CAN be a birth control, but its flawed, right now since your not getting your period, your not ovulating. It varies in different women, so you don't know when you start ovulating again. They say 6 months. Mine came back right away. You could start ovulating any time and get pregnant while breastfeeding. You wont as long as you don't ovulate, but you cant tell when you start.

Yes you can. It really depends on the person though. I started back up at 3 months post partum.
It's just less likely that you'll get pregnant, especially without a period.

Yes you can still get pregnant, the old wives tale that you can't is a load of rubbish.

It's not true. I know several women that thought that and ended up pregnant again. It does make it harder to get pregnant, but it does not prevent it.

Breast feeding is not a contraceptive sorry... although it does actually work for some people for some time, you never know when you'll ovulate and once you do there is a chance of conception. Hope this helps have an awesome day :)

Yes you can get pregnant. If you breastfeed on demand day and night breastfeeding can be effective birth control for the first 6 months. After that baby usually starts solids and sleeping longer at night. Most of the time you will get a warning period which is where your period comes but you don't ovulate. This is mother nature's way of telling you you are now fertile. This is not 100% though. Some women ovulate before this and can get pregnant.

You can still become pregnant while breastfeeding even though your menstrual cycle has seized. Just to be on the safe side, consult with your doctor on the right birth control to use while breastfeeding. Good Luck!

NO! Even though you're not getting a regular period you can absolutely still get pregnant. I had a friend that was under the same assumption and i tried to tell her that wasnt true but she still thought it couldn't happen and her little guy was about 6 months old when she got pregnant again with number 2!

You can still get pregnant whilst breastfeeding. I think the statistics are that breastfeeding is 97% affective. I have had a few friends fall pregnant whilst breastfeeding.
