My son is 7 months old and I am weaning him from the breast. He would not take a bottle for the last 3 months, but I went to a movie 2 weeks ago and my husband got him to take it. So I decided that I would use this as an opening for weaning him before he decided he wasnt going to take it again. Plus he is so distracted while hes nursing its getting to be a pain in the butt. So I have been giving him a bottle once a day after his supper since Saterday. ( He eats 1/3 a jar of veggies and 3 tbls of rice cereal, I'm going to start him on meat soon and cut down the amount of cereal.) I'm going to ween him very slowly, dropping a feeding once a week and maybe longer for his last feeding of the day. ( I still love that one) He is only drinking 4oz of formula and because I always breast fed him I'm not sure if he is drinking enough. Or if this is normal. Please let me know if 4oz with the food hes eating is enough for him to drink at 7 months. Thank you for any comments and help.

Since you have been breastfeeding and formula is heavier than breastmilk, he is probably only taking that much because it fills him up alot faster than BM does. I weaned my daughter at about 8 months and we had the same problem with her not wanting the bottle, so we started with the after dinner feed because then her dad would be home and he could give it to her so she didn't mind but if I was sitting right there, she wouldn't take it, she would want me instead. Over the next month, I bet he will be taking 6-7 ounces instead. Also, I just re-read the part where you said you were giving it to him after his supper so he is probably already pretty full at that point so 4 oz is actually quite a bit now that I've taken that into consideration lol. Ya, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you are replacing each feeding you take away with a bottle of formula, you shouldn't have to worry about supplementing water. They don't actually need water until they are a year old but if you want you can start giving him a couple sips after a meal just to get him used to it but you don't want him to fill up on it so just a couple sips so he is still able to eat his meals and drink all his milk he needs in a day.

My baby eats 1/4 cup cereal in the morning w/ a 6 oz bottle of applejuice afterwards. Then she eats a 6 oz bottle of milk about 1-2 hrs later, then she eats lunch (the gerber baby plastic containers for 1 meal) and she will drink a 6 oz bottle of milk w/in 1-2 hrs afterwards, she repeats that all through the day, except after she eats her dinner about 5, she usually drinks 2 bottles between then and going to sleep. But she has never gotten up to drinking 8 oz at a time, but she is gaining weight just fine and staying on track of her growing. Every child is different. Check with the doctor at your child's next appointment to make sure that they are staying on track, and as long as they are and they are not showing signs of malnutrition, your baby will be fine. After all, they are pretty good about letting you know when they are hungry!! :)
