my daughter is 8, we have tried everything, Rid didn't do crap! I used that twice! use the comb, still they came back like everyother week,
my husband and friend told me dying there hair worked, well I finally broke down and did it after I cut it, and not leaving it in for the recommended time, (left it in only 5 -10 min( combed through for like a half hour, and didn't find anything, the bugs i did find were dead, I am going to keep combing through it everyday, but it seemed to work.

i had lice from primary school up until grade 12 and we tried everything to get rid of it sometimes they would go away for year but then would be back and the best thing that got rid of it all...was a hair straightener! it was so hot it would burn eggs and the live ones and comb it out everyday to get rid of the dead ones and it was gone within a week or two so if you have children old enough try that once or twice it should work :)

Oh yeah one more thing. To keep the bugs away try blow drying the hair after every bath. The bugs really hate the heat and stay away. The oils is truly the best I have evr seen at removing the eggs.

vegetable oil works wonders. you putit on let it set for about an hour then while it is still in there comb it out. then wash it( dawn helps to wash out the oil) and then recomb it. My mother swears by it. nothing gets out the eggs like oil.

I have to say I have always used the original blue dawn. Wash the hair really good with it then baby oil to comb out the nits and bugs. dawn to wash out the oil. When I was in the fifth grade my father was doing our hair every couple months due to going to a babysitter. I had three major seizures due to the chemicals. Ever since then it has been dawn for myself and all nieces and nephews. I have never had a problem with it not working... But I do stress that the original blue dawn and honestly it is the best for your animals with fleas also.

i agrre with everyone but i think no matter how hard you try use all that the fact is that it hard when other parents dont do there own kids so its just a awful cycle again also hair straightner is good at burning eggs and try not clean there hair so much

I would also like to say, being a cosmetologist... specifically a color artist.. Hair color will only kill the bugs... it seems like harsh enough chemical to kill the eggs but its not, it could be a pH thing, it could be from some other chemical property but it doesn't work.. you might as well use mayo and at least get a good protein treatment out of it.. lol. The actual lice solution is the only thing that will kill the eggs.

Coloring your childs hair is NOT the answer. It dosnt always kill the eggs...either way the nits still have to be removed. It's hard work..ot an easy job. There is not quick fix.

no. this is what works. dye your kids hair the same color it is. it will kill all lice and eggs, and dont have to cut any hair. trust me. this has worked for fifteen years the first time. everybody needs to know this secret!

Well...clean clean clean. Lice sotution is the best way in my opinion. Make sure you get ALL the nits...also they say on the bottles repeate in 7 days..DO IT. this is a must. If you dont the out break can happen again..and back to square one.
Also make sure to clean and vaccume everything...steam clean ect. Also this may sound odd...dont forget about the stuffed animals & the dolls with hair. They need to be packed away for 2-3 weeks or if they can go in the dryer on a very hot setting to kill any eggs or bug that could be on them. No lice can't survive on them...but can be off a human head for about 24 hours...something to think about

i found no way to get rid of it without using RID lice shampoo... we had to do it twice... and had to comb the hair with conditioner every other day to get rid of the eggs... also all bedding and clothes we washed EVERY single day for 1 1/2 weeks in hot water and packed up the comforter and pillows for 4 weeks

My 4 yr old got lice from preschool! I am a clean freak and I was totally disgusted!!! I bought the lice shampoo with the comb and treated her with that the day I found them, and than I lysoled the furniture after I vacuumed it all. I took the bedding and blankets off everyone's bed and washed it in hot water and dried it on high. Than with the stuffed animals or baby dolls she had with hair or cloth I put them in a plastic bag and sealed them up for about a week! I just vacuumed daily and washed everything daily as well. And a week later I repeated the shampoo. It was completley gone by day 9. THANK GOD!

tea tree oil and constant picking!!! pick out the eggs every day till you cannot find anymore!!! its tedious but my sis has 4 kids with THICK hair and has had to deal with it plenty! this is the only way she has been able to get rid of them! vinegar works well also.

I know the chemicals sound awful but I think its your best bet. I do think they make natural lice killers though I dont know how they work. I saw some stuff at my local health food store. I know when we were younger I got it at school and my parents would do all the stuff and get rid of it an I would bring it back home from school again. My mom callled the school and said she was going to withdrawl me if they didnt do something about it. turns out another child had it and nothing was being done about it so several other students were getting them.
Use the lice shampoo on EVERYONE in your family, even if you dont see them. Use the lice spray on all furniture and carpet, curtains/drapes, Put all stuffed animals either through the dryer for a few cycles or stuff them in tightly sealed plastic trash bags and leave them tightly sealed (double bag) for at least two weeks. also, wash everything! in hot water and run it through the dryer extra long to kill them. this has to be done for the entire family.

that's what I got when I googled organic head lice treatment. good luck

**Deep Breath**

I've had to deal with these little bastards plenty. I swear I could be in the same state with someone who had it and I was doomed when I was little...

First - don't try to use olive oil or mayo until after you've treated her with the over the counter lice shampoo. The oil based things are really to loosen the nits so that they come off the hair folicle easier. It can also help to suffocate the live bug but does nothing to kill the eggs.

You will need to use the special comb in her hair that is designed to pull them out then go through her hair with your fingers. It is going to take a while so get comfy.

You will need to treat everyone and everything. Bedding, stuffed animals (you can through them in the dryer on high heat) carpets, your car, everything!

You will need to treat her again with the shampoo a few days later to prevent re-infestation and treat everything again.

I recommend, NIX or RID and you can also get a Rx from the doctor.

coat the hair in vaseline. Its gonna look greasy and be annoying, but it suffocates them and they cant live. this is what we did when I was little and my family had the problem. Good luck!

if you can get tea tree oil in the states its really good natural deterrent to lice. Also an australian headlice product by a company callds NADS (bad name) has an all natural headlice treament.

washing sheets hats pillow cases etc in hot water is enough to kill the lice, the eggs may not be killed in the hair so comb out again after 5-7days

aaaaaaand the best part?...you've probably got it too...do you have anybody to help YOU?

They make combs to help with the picking, too. I'm sure they still sell them in the stores. I mean, lice is a recurring ailment, haha, not a fashion fad.

And Rid. Rid is some great stuff.

After having four head-fulls in as many years when in primary school, yeah...I'm gonna have to say use Rid and tea tree oil.

Yeah...you're gonna need something more than just shampoo on this one.

My mom used tea tree oil when I got lice. My hair was so long that anytime any kid got lice, I got it too. But she started mixing tea tree oil into my shampoo. It doesn't smell all that great but it works.

Here's a link to an article about it:

I hope that helps!

I was a hairstylist for 10 years, and now I am the lice lady at my kids' school AND bot of my kids have had lice twice. I use the chemicals. The natural remedies CAN work but yes, you will need to nit pick daily (which I do anyway and you should do anyway) The difference is...that if you miss one or two and you've used the chemicals PROPERLY (note most of them are conditioners NOT shampoos...and you cannot use conditioner before OR after for a week) then the nits will probably not hatch, where as if you use a natural method, the nits you miss will hatch and they are IMPOSSIBLE to see until they are mature and of breeding age.

Good Luck.

this happened to my 5 year old a 2 days before this thanksgiving. honestly the medicine does work and as long as you cleaned up as much as you can thats all you can do. dont forget to boil the sheets and blankets and the pillow cases or they will come right back in her head. and the picking is the most horrible part i got cricks in my neck but once her hair is cleaned out and you got most of them out wait 5 days and try the medicine again... and just check her hair occasionaly.. dont forget that she can get tham again from her clothes hair ribbons, hats, i mean anything that has come in contact with her hair. Good luck to you. and i hope i helped a little.

I would like to state also, that I am a cosmetologist and they will all tell you the same thing. all of the natural options only take care of the bugs, not their eggs and cannot be used as a permanent solution.
Paul Mitchell makes a tea tree shampoo, but I would only use that method as a preventative measure... Remember, the cleaner the hair is, the more ideal the living condition is for the lice... they LOVE clean hair..
Veggie Oil is the same as using mayo.. all it does is suffocated the live insects and doesn't do anything for the eggs so it will just come right back.

have you tried tea tree oil, you just mix it in your shampoo it not only helps kill lice but will help keep them from getting it in the future, smells a little weird but you can use it all the time. you can also try using vegetable oil (yes the stuff you cook with) soak the hair in it and wrap the hair in a towel, leave it in over night and wash it out in the morning......old clothes and sheets are suggested because the vegetable oil will stain

Kayleigh - posted on 11/29/2010

honestly, the chemicals are your best bet...
I know it sux but all the healthy alternatives don't work well.. when i was a kid we had lice that we couldn't get rid of for 2 1/2 years... it was HELL. My parents tried everything... lice solution, mayo, hair dye, combing... it ended with them shaving our heads finally b/c nothing else worked... Your best bet is to do the actual lice solution, give them a shorter haircut if they have long hair, and comb the crap out of it... wash EVERYTHING in the house, including steam cleaning the carpets and repeat again every week for 3 or 4 weeks.
It really depends on how resilient your lice strain is, but most of them are incredibly horrible to get rid of.. also, talk to a doctor and see if they have any prescription solutions that work better than the over the counter stuff.

good luck ♥
