My 3.5 year old loves to lock doors and ever since grammie coaxed her to unlock the door w/candy, she is always locking her bedroom door, front door, car doors, if the door locks-she figures it out. I don't know how to stop this behavior, then mabey spanking her? I'm not sure. Her 18 month old brother also shares a room with her and he hates the door closed so when she does lock it it scares him to pieces, and all I can do is yell from the other side for her to open the door. I sometimes can pick the lock, but it doesnt always work. I called the landlord and asked permission to switch the door knob but the wont let me...I am lost, any ideas?

I like the doorknob backwards idea and the tape too, though I tried duct tape over the light switch and she got it off and tried to feed it to her brother. The towel over the hinge is really smart. My poor son always trys to close the door by sticking his hand in the crease by the hinge. I think he is going to lose one of his fingers! Thank you all for your prompt responses, it is all very helpful.

We turned our door knobs backwards so the lock is on the outside of the door and not the inside. My daughter loves to close and lock doors too but since door knobs are backwards its not a big deal.

Hi, get the door bumpers, for your doors or a cheaper option is to throw a towel over the door at the hinge side this way she can not close the door to lock it. this also stops the chance of little fingers being slammed in the door. As for the front door and car doors make sure you have a spare set of keys handy somewhere she can not get to.
Or make sure you lock them first.

I put tape over the locks on all my doors now they can't lock the doors. I needs to be heavy duty tape though so it doesn't come off easily.
