I have had irregular periods my entire life apart from when I am on the contraceptive pill. More recently they have become even more irregular to the point where sometimes I miss a month completely I went to GP and through blood tests and an ultrasound they have informed me that I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. My problem is that my husband and I weren't planning on having any more children for a couple more years (we have a 4 yr old and a 3 yr old) as we have recently brought a house and are renovating. My doctor has told me that I should go back onto the contraceptive pill to help with my hormones and that there is no guarantee that in the future my symptoms wont become worse making it hard for us to conceive... So the question is.. should I go back on the pill and risk not having any more babies? or should we start trying for a baby even though we know money will be tight? any advice would be greatly appreciated =) =) thanks

I was diagnosed with this when I was fourteen or so, but I'll be 21 this April and I am pregnant with our first. However, after I was diagnosed my doctor prescribed Aviane, a low-hormone birth control pill. I took it all through high school and during my first year of college. It helped with everything, the cysts, the irregular bleeding, and even the pain. As far as I know, I no longer have the cysts. They were so bad when I was first diagnosed that I was told I could not get pregnant. Apparently, either I was lied to or my cysts have gone away because my daughter is due in early January.

If I were you, I would think about finances and what's best for the family before I considered having another child. I would go back to the pill and try later. Maybe you could try Aviane, if you weren't already taking it? It's not uncommon for women with PCOS to still be able to have babies. I know plenty of women who have it and still have had children. Besides, you've already had two, so it seems like it hasn't impeded your reproductive system too much.

So I would wait. In a few years, when you and your husband decide to have another child, you could still do in-vitro because the cysts shouldn't affect your uterus, even if they cover your ovaries.
