I say talk to your doctor. Think about it. . .Did they have birth control back in the day? We are putting unnatural things into our bodies to prevent the one thing God intended us to do . .give birth! So of course our bodies will have reactions. I have had it for ! year. It is an in office procedure. You can have it removed any time and start to try to conceive if you change your mind (unlike other BC. it is harder for your body to adjust) I had cramping and irregular bleeding for the !st 5 months but I dont have a period now. Everyone is different and may react differently. I would say the most serious issues are uterine perforation and the slight chance you may get pregnant. Your doctor should follow up with you after inserting it to be sure perforation doesnt occur. I have heard of two cases where women got pregnant on it and still gave birth but I would say it is likely to miscarry if you do happen to get pregnant with mirena in. A lot of people get it and don't realize that it is meant for women in relationships. There is a reason that this is on the list of questions that your doctor asks you. I'm pretty sure they have a website(mirena) cute baby!!!!!

I've had mine for about 3 and a half months now. A couple of weeks ago I had really sore nipples too that lasted about a week. I was a little worried that I was pregnant but now after seeing your question I am thinking it might be beacuse of the Mirena.

The Mirena goes in your cervix. Are you talking about the same iud? The iud that goes in your arm is called Etonogestrel. Getting mirena put in isn't that bad. They clamp your cervix to put it in put it just feels like pressure, thats al.

That's a bit of an understatement...I felt like I was giving birth again when they inserted it!  Fortunately only felt like that for a day, but DEFINITELY don't plan on doing anything the rest of the day other than laying on your couch w/ a heating pad!

I have had Mirena for about a year and a half. I do get some tenderness from time to time but nothing I can't handle, I do recall it was a bit worse when it was new though. My biggest problem with it is that my periods are INSANE!!!! They make no sense what so ever. I won't have one for a couple of months and then out of no where i will bleed for two weeks. the is the WORST part. beyond that, i REALLY like it.

As for OTER bc's. I was on the patch when we conceived our son son, so, not a big fan. and Nuva Ring made my sex drive disappear, so my husband was not a big fan of that, but everyone is different.

I tried the IUD and I hated it. It mad sex hurt, messed up my periods, gave my migrains. I had mine in for over a year and decided that I had enough and got it removed.

I've had mine for 3 months and had some soreness before my period, but not where it was that painful. It's been a godsend to me because I've had problems with the Pill, high blood pressure, and heavy periods ever since I had my daughter until I got the Mirena.

I have had my Mirena IUD for a bout a yr and a half.

I like it better then taking the pill..I dont have to remember to re-order and take them at the same time everyday. In the end...it was way----- cheaper!!!

The down side though: my breast get tender at times as well; my sex drive SUCKS; my periods are a mystery, but when they do come around every few months they are light(So I guess that's a PLUS, not a down side haha); and I shed a little more than normal, but I am not going bald.

After reading these posts, I never thought that some of my abnormal overy pains may be caused by the IUD...there are sometimes when I have to curl up til the pain passes, but that's not very often to where I would get it removed. The pain is bad enough to where it reminds me of when I had a complex ovarian cyst erupt.( Worse than labor!!!) ...still...not enough to make me get it removed....

Every woman is different, so do what is best for you and your body.

i have not experienced sore nipples with mirena however i would assume it would be because of the hormones...

i have had it for a year now and i am not fond of it however i hated taking the pill (i got pregnant on it and then miscarried- so don't think i'll do that again). i have a 14 month old and do not want to take the chance of having another one anytime soon so this is what i chose- like i said i am not going to promote this because i don't really like it however i feel safer with it then taking the pill that i would forget to take, make me sick, ect. and as far as the shot- my obgyn said she would not give it to me because of how much wt you really do gain with it...

hi there,
I had a mirena for 11 months and had all sorts of menstrual (early pregnancy) symptoms. I asked my doctor about it and apparantly almost ANYTHING is normal for the first two years! I loved it for the first 6months, had no symptoms but after that I had sore nipples and speratic episodes of heavy bleeding that lasted weeks! In the end I'd had enough and got it removed and my body returned to normal straight after. I do have very crazy sensitive hormones tho, I cant take the pill because of the effects of the hormones on me, everyone is different tho. Your pain might go away soon and then you could be fine for the next 5 years, I guess it's up to you how long you can handle it before enough is enough....

I have had mine for nearly three years and I remember having a variety of problems the first year that I had it. I don't quite remember if my nipples were sore but I began losing my hair, I continuously spotted for months, and had horrible mood swings. Plus when I went back to the doctor to check it he told me he couldn't find the string anymore so I had to go have an ultrasound to find it. They say when I'm ready to get mine out that I have to have it surgically removed which is scary. I want to get rid of it now because I think it has had negative effects on my health but I don't really have any other options either. I don't want to get pregnant again so I have pretty much been dealing with it. I don't spot anymore or anything but I have had a variety of other health problems that I never had prior to having this IUD. Good luck with yours.

A lot of birth controls don't work though. I was on Yaz when I got preggers with my daughter. But am now on Seasonique and it is wonderful! no mood swings - sex drive is definitely still there - no depression. I would totally recommend it! Plus you get 3 months at a time!

For everyone who has the IUD mirena: Talk to your doctors! I have a wonderful doctor who talked with me several times and answered all of my ?s before inserting the IUD. With all BC there are risks and side effects. Mirena is different because the hormone acts locally. This means you do not have symptoms like weight gain and mood swings. Uterine perforation is a risk. . .the bleeding and cramping. . . .and yes you can get pregnant. . .read your pamphlets and check into other possibilities for your symptoms . .. as for sore nipples. . .we are women with sensitive areas. I know I have had sore nipples prior to getting mirena and I have friends who dont have mirena and have had sore nipples without any form of BC.

A friend of mine got prego again 16 months after getting her tubes tied.  Sounds like a permanent solution but apparently not always 100% effective.  Whatever you choose to do I hope it works out for you though... I've had  the Mirena (2yrs now) and havent had any probs so I'm happy, I've heard lots of people say they didnt like it though.

I have had mine for 2 years now and have never experienced anything like that. I know it throws your body out of whack for a while. It can make your periods really intense for some time. If that was a symptom you experienced during your normal period prior to the Mirena it simply could be intensified until your body adjusts to the iud. It gets better, but it never hurts to get a doctors oppinion.

Yes, mine were on the sore side too for a bit. They didn't hurt as bad as your are describing but still enough to make ya stop and think about it. Eventualy it did go away but every now and then the pain will randomly come back for a few seconds. I have had mine for almost 6 months now and so far I like it. Yes there are those wonderfull side effects but I had that with the pill but this way I don't have to remember to take it lol.

Good luck with it and I'm sure it will go away and fast!

This is for Sandra!! I love my IUD!!! It has been a God send for me. Other BCs just didnt work for me. Either I had hormonal issues or they failed. I love my son but obviously he got here for lack of either full responsibility on my part or it just didnt work. My husband I can enjoy intimacy without stressing anymore about any more unexpected lil'ones. There are side affect and you should discuss whether this is the right option for you. It might not be. Honestly not matter what I say you cannot take my word for it, Be informed and speak with your physician!!! My doc did say I was in that very very tiny perecentile of women who get pregnant using Mirena. Hey, and if I never used it I wouldn't have the best thing in my life right now :)

I have now started with the NUVARING but absolutly will not have sex with out a condom.  Molly doesn't need any siblings, well not yet at least!

I had the NuvaRing before I got the IUD...I was so MEAN when using the NR.  It made me so moody.  I would just scream at my kids for every little thing.  I used it for about 8 months and couldn't stand it anymore.  The IUD is so amazing for me.  I have LIGHT periods that last 2-3 days.  Its perfect for me!  I love it!

The first time I had it taken out I was preggers within 2 weeks, the second time took 3 months. I am now pregnant with my third baby and when she is here, I will get my IUD put back in...no hormones, nothing negative whatsoever!!!

I had mirena in for about a year when I decided I couldn't take it anymore! My boobs would swell a whole cup size larger 2 weeks out of the month and my nipples were very sensitive all the time! I also had bad acne, headaches, anxiety, fatigue, and weight gain! Mirena is awlful and all of the symptoms went away 6 weeks after having it removed. It took about 6months for all the side effects to kick in so watch out for them.

I had pain and would even bleed sometimes during intercourse when I had mirena.
