My 11 week old is constipated, any advice?

He usually has 6-7 poop diapers but yesterday he had only one and today he hasn't had any. I talked to my midwife and she said it was common because they burn so many calories and it could last 7-8 days. I was just wondering what methods other moms have used to help them through it. Thank you!

Put just a lil tab of dark karo syrup in his bottle , that'll help him go. Try some small lil things, like rub his tummy for a lil bit and push his legs up toward his tummy, kinda like exercising motions and that'll help him go too. Or try some Cranberry juice

I went through the same thing with my son and it may sounds weird, but i stuck a thermometer up his butt and it came right out. It's kinda hard when their so young because the shouldn't have juice or anything. Hope it helps.

i diluted 2oz of prune juice with 1oz of water. if you warm it up a little, it works faster, but dont give it to him too frequently. u dont want his body to get used to it

I went through it with my last child and believe it or not her doctorhad to change her formula three times. And the last time they switched her over to ( Isomil soy formula) and it work better than the similac and enamil what she was on at first.

1/2 an ounce of camamile tea with baby's bottle twice a day (make a regular cup of tea with tsp of sugar) save the rest in the refrigorator so you don't need to make a new cup of tea every time. You can give the tea to the baby straight but some babies wont drink it (mine would).

It happened to my daughter around that age or maybe a bit older. We gave her the recommended dose of gripe water and within a 30 mins to an hour she had her bm and then we had no other issues with it.

and please dont start your child on juice like the other lady said its so bad for them the sugar and acid will give them BAD diaper rash!!!

It was recomended to me by a doctor and a midwife to try juice, just water it down or if using prune juice make it at home by boiling dried prunes in 200mls of water for 5 mintues then straining all the lumps out and using the liquid. The little "sugar" that is in juice once diluted never hurt my child and to this day (he is 15 months old) he has never had nappy rash

I was told when breast feeding my son that he would never be constipated. once i switched him to formula he had terrible constipation I tried lots of things....extra water before his bottle, prune juice everything suggested to me by my midwife I did and nothing working. I took him to my doctor and the doctor recommended I try suppositories (available for infants from my local chemist) and they worked a treat. The way i could tell if he was constipated was he hadnt pooped for a couple of day and he would get really irritated coz he had pains also he would do little tiny hard pebble like poos. Any doubts thought i would be taking him to the doctors just to be sure. Good luck

My little boy had that problem at first too. The only thing I found that worked was an old remedy! Get the clear Karro Syrup and put 3-4 drops each in 2 night bottles & by morning you'll be in for a surprise. it doesnt give them the runs or anythign & my peditrician said it was fine too.

Start doing regular leg exercises with your little one. Hold them by the feet, and push their knees into the tummy lightly, then release. Repeat this a few times. He may even enjoy this little exercise.

First of all what are you feeding him because my son had the same problem because me being a first time mom didnt know babies spit up all the time so i thought something was wrong with him and i put him on soy formula. then after a while he wasnt pooping or if he did he would be straining and screaming it was coming out really hard which isnt healthy. i switched him to regular milk base and he was so happy and normal again. as they get older they dont poop as much i guess. and please dont start your child on juice like the other lady said its so bad for them the sugar and acid will give them BAD diaper rash!!!

this is going to sound gross, but lube up a thermometer and stick it up the behind. or you can try more fluid intake. did you try switching formula. i did that with my newborn and she ended up being constipated and cranky real bad and the thermometer trick worked.

Pear juice, apple juice, or karo in formula...this worked for my twins when they were having problems...with karo though, be sure to give the baby gas drops since karo can give them excess gas which is painful.

Here is the biggest question is the poop like paste ( kinda formed like adult poop)? If not he is fine it is just him taking in all the nutrients of his food. If it is you can use a table spoon of dark Karyo syrup in his bottle or 2 oz of INFANT apple, prune or pear juice. my son had really bad constipation after he had to switch to formula. but always talk to his pedatrician first he might have a nother option for you to try first.

I used the karo in the bottle trick and it works great. whatever you do DO NOT give your baby water. Juice is fine if you buy the baby juices but dont dilute regular juice. Water has no sodium in it. If the baby's sodium level drops they can start having seizures

My daughter would occasionaly get constipated and I would giver her about 2 oz of warm water everyday. Even though our dr doesn't recommend it I did it anyways. She's now 4 months old and it hasn't hurt her yet.

This happened to my lil' guy too. I read in one of my parenting books to give him a little bit of water in a bottle so I did. No joking, a few hours later he had a huge poop. Give that a try. Hope it helps=)

Hi there, my daughter would go 10 days without doing anything (she was purely breast fed), and all the books say they can go a while, but she was uncomfortable. I am not sure what your health choices for your child are, but we took her to a homeopath who gave us some drops to give to her, which sorted the problem out pronto, without causing any reliance on medication to make it happen every time. If she went longer than 3 days, then I would use the drops! Another thing to try is a tummy massage after a bath with some natural oil (like olive oil - we dont use petroleum based products on our child). You stroke gently from left to right starting just under the ribs, then you stroke from the right side under the ribs gently straight down to between the hip and pubic area, this helps move the faecal matter along. Our midwife also show me how to stimulate the anal sphincter by "tickling" the anus with a rectal thermometer, but I would not recommend this without a demonstration! It is not hard to do, but the reaction is quite hectic, you need to put a towel down because if there is a back up with air, you can get sprayed or the nappy will overflow. Hope some of my experience with this gives you options! Warmly Dee

It is said to be normal, but check wot u eat also, if ur child is breast fed certain foods u eat can coz constipation in the child. Hope it clears soon.

wheni had taht happen the only thing i could do was help it along, you could massage their stomach lightly in a circular motion. if it starts becoming really bad where the child is in pain, i have also just had to suffer through with them. hold their legs in the fetal position while crying. it helps alot to push it through so they can have normal bowels again. it also could just be caused from something you ate if you are breast feeding.

I give my som warm milk with a bit of corn syrup in it. sometimes sugar will help. warm watered down prune or cranberry juice will work too. For hiccups give warm water with a bit of white sugar in it. works like a charm with my son,

You can use Karo Syrup. Just add a little (teaspoon) to a 4 oz bottle until he has bowel movement and then you can decrease it until he starts having having regular bowel moments. It is recommended that you take him to his pediatrician if he has not had a bowel movement in 2 days.

My daughter has trouble pooping good sometimes too. If he is eating baby cereal like oatmeal or whole wheat etc. then what I did was take a bottle mix some prune juice with water about half of each (4 oz water & 4 oz juice) and mix it with his cereal every other day only once a day though and that should help. It helps my daughter every time. Hope this helps you! Good luck I know it can be tough cause I had the problem with my oldest daughter as well as my little one.

My son had horrible constipation....what i found to work for me alittle tweeking on advice ive gotten from here and there is......you can try a small amount of prune juice like a tsp in his bottle right with his normal formula/milk or you can try white grape juice with water when my son was that young i did 1 oz juice to 3 ozs water so he didnt turn around and have diahrea from the juice. Also white grape juice is less likely to give him gas then other juices like apple or prune. Also just the extra water helps to hydrate evrything in the digestive track so it keeps running smoothly so let him drink on water during the day too; not in place of his bottles of course. Plus it;s good to get them liking water early so they keep drinking it when they are older.

Soy Milk is bad for your kids. i wouldn't suggest it. It makes your children grow faster than normal. Soy has 5 times the amount of hormones n it as a birth control pill. It is known to make girls develope faster in their brests and with their periods and because of the female hormone it makes your sons balls not grow to normal size and makes them start thinking like a girl. it is clinically proven and I could find the facts for you!! But please stay away from soy!! ;Let your kid grow the way he or she is suppose to. Don't speed it up!! APPLE JUICE all the way baby!! That works wonders on my son!!

THis is always a good method also; holding the legs up bending the knees while the baby is on your lap or your holding him/her against your chest.

Quoting Samantha:

my best advise is to get ur doctor to write u a prescription for miralax. it is amazing stuff. but u can also try holding ur child against ur chest and pulling his legs up to his stomach and rubbing in a clockwise motion on his lower back. that also helps alot. hope this helps.
