my 22 month old doesnt say any real words he babbles alot and says a few words should i be worried?

i really have a feeling this is something that may be affecting my son who is 20 months and doesnt talk so thanks for bringing it up

I have 16-month old fraternal twin girls... One is picking up and imitating words, phrases, and behaviors, and is quite expressive, lol. The other has just as much personality, and seems to have no problem understanding any of us--recognized her dad and me, and will even follow instructions perfectly. However, aside from a few basic words here and there (hi, bye, no, and "nose"), most of her talk seems to be babble...

Is this a situation in which my girls are just developing differently, and I need to relax? Or should I begin to consider consulting a speech therapist?

My grandson just turned 22 months old yesterday and he has a vocabulary of 300 plus words and also knows at least 20 words in spanish. He is speaking in sentences of about 4 to 5 words as well.

i know it helps cause i have witnessed it with children my mother kept in her daycare and children that are in school it does help and i do strongly suggest it

It is usually something not to worry too much about. I was told that speech and understanding can develop seperately. As long as he can point to things when you ask him to it shows that he is developing that understanding, and his speech may follow soon. If time goes on and he still isn't talking you may have to bring your concern back to his doctor's attention.

Read to him everynight!!! Have him point to things in the picture, then after awhile have him ask you to find things. Make it a game. After awhile he'll be pointing to things that he see else where. Its all about increasing his vocabulary. Something else I've done with my one year old is everything I hand her I say the name of it, after awhile she's says the name of the object when I hand it to her. At this young age its all about repetition, repetition and repetition. And just keep in mind that developmentally boys tend to talk later. PS I am a Kinder teacher:-)

All kids are different and grow at different speeds (physically and mentally). However; at 2 years old, I would be questioning also. I have four children and my youngest is 18 months. She talks a lot, but I think it's because of all the kids around. You might want to get a second opinion. It may be nothing at all, but it would make you feel better. I know as moms we worry about everything.

Have you talked to your pediatrician about your concerns? If you have are you satisfied with the answers you were given? The main thing to remember is that all children develop different skills at different times, if this is the only skill your child hasn't achieved it may not be as big a problem as you think... but if you are noticing that there are more milestones they haven't achieved, you should really seek more answers. Trust your gut and remember that you are your child's advocate, if you think there's an issue make sure it is addressed!

I should clarify that we didn't go to a therapist or program, he spoke when he was ready on his own.

sometime kids just dont talk unless they want to and no carrying them to speech wont help normally they will just talk when they are good and ready

i would be just because hes not talking like a normal 2 year old. there is a program called early childhood intervention or ECI. you could probably get your child in it if you mention it to you doctor and it will help.

Evry child is different my mother did not start talking til she was 5. They took her to all sorts of doctors who couldn't find anything wrong with her, she started school and after a couple month she was pushed up a grade. Turns out she had nothing to say. My daughter started talking at 3 in full sentances, docs told me it was because all she had to do was make a noise and her brother would jump to get her what she wanted or talk for her. If your really worried increase your reading to him.

I wouldn't worry too much yet. Our doctor had scared us quite a bit at our son's 18 month check-up when she said that at the next appointment we would talk more about a speech therapist. But he had all of the understanding down. Like your son, he'd point to an object we asked about, or bring us whatever we asked for. Very soon after his 2nd birthday he began to say things like "pea", "yes", etc. I still have the videos, he wasn't saying a whole lot. But then within a month or two his vocabulary EXPLODED! He's almost 3 now and the first comment we get now is how advanced his speech is. It's really a miracle. He is very complex in his sentence structure and descriptions. Don't get upset or make him think that he's not doing the right thing when he doesn't say the right word. Just keep talking to him like you always do and it will come. Like you, I was very worried, but I didn't let him know it. If there is something not quite right, talk with your doctor and they'll refer you to someone. But as long as his comprehension is there, I wouldn't worry a ton yet.

My daughter will be 4 in march and she has a speech delay. She had been and still is in speech therapy and it does seem to help. She is getting better. I would say if you feel that he needs speech therapy I would do it. It couldn't hurt only help.

Dont worry, my son did the same thing. And then suddenly they start to build their vocabulary really fast. By age 3 he was starting to make sense. Just be patient and dont use baby talk when you speak to the baby.

My 2nd son had some issues too. At his 2yr check up the doctor said he should have about 30 words from 24mo-30mo and he definitly did not! So she refered us to an early intervention program, and in the last year the kid has gone from about 10 words, to 5 plus word sentences, and now all i want if for him to just be quiet, because he wont stop talking, haha.



Every child is different, and if they need help it's not always for the same thing. Some have hearing issues, others have muscle strength issues, and even some just neeed the chance to sit and have a focused language sessions for their development.



I wouldn't worry, if he is healthy otherwise, and understands you and communicates with gestures and what not, just check with your Pedi, and reserach some early intervention programs in your area, or special education pre-schools that offer speech, those are the best options, Good Luck!!

This happened to my cousin and they found out her daughter had an abnormality of nerves that control the jaw and tongue. with speech therapy it turned out fine. I guess my advice is go with your gut, if you feel something is wrong get a second opinion, but remember every child develops on their own timeline.
