MY doctor recommmed around 4 months old cause my daughter was glumping down full bottles and always hungry, but the you will have other people looking at you like your insane for doing it. I had a home care vistor a mom it was her job to come around and help answer questions and help with problems when my daughter was a baby. She was mad and told me my doctor was wrong. She is the top of her feild in that area and most areas. I was mad. I think if they are ready at 4 months, 5 months or 6 months you try them you can always stop if they are having trouble and try again later.

let your baby tell you when they are ready. My doctor said to wait til 4 months because their little belly cant digest solids yet. but if your baby has no interest in solids yet dont force him/her to eat it.

i started feeding my son rice cereal when he was 2 months old....i debated it for a long time since he was a premie but i researched it and then asked his pediatrician...he has horrible acid reflux and the ped told me to start putting rice cereal in his bottles.....his ped said as long as its rice cereal it doesnt matter the age its started...and since its rice they cant get food allergies...if your not 100% sure just ask the ped....plus your baby will let you know when there ready for cereal and solids...if your baby seems to be hungry all the time then try to introduce the cereal...your baby will let you know if there not ready....try spoon feeding once a day to try and get your baby used to the whole spoon thing...my son is almost 4 months old and he still doesnt quite understand the whole spoon thing but his ped says its ok since hes 5 weeks behind (since he was a premie).....GOOD LUCK and if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask the peditrician

it depends on the baby. every situation is different. My daughter Kathryn started eating a little bit of cerial at under a week old. My baby Mary required it it thicken her formula and had it in every bottle to illuminate vomiting. and my son started at 3 weeks old, a couple baby spoons full every night at bed time, It helped him sleep longer at night and satisfy his hunger. they all did fine, Dr's are gonna tell you what they know. which, I may add, has changed every time I have had a child. it changes with the times.
but, good luck, just listen to your baby,if their hunger isn't satisfied with just formula, the night feeding of a vary little bit of cereal with their night bottle may help.

My daughter is 3 months old, and she has been a big eater for a while now. She never seemed to be satisfied with formula. My doctor told me at about almost 3 months that we could put a little RICE cereal in her bottle (dont use the flavored cereals yet). We've been using about 2 table spoons in a 6 oz bottle at night time and since we started that she sleeps about 6-7 hours straight at night time. I really think it depends on your baby, and if you think they need the cereal. It's something we only do at night time for now.

Quoting KARRA:

never heard of that, the enzyme to digest food is located in the stomach, not the mouth or tooth, how do u think they break down and DIGEST the formula/breast milk. i was never told not to give either of my children solid foods before their 1st tooth arrived.

I never heard that about the first tooth thing i don't believe it to be true as a nurse avised me that babies can self feed soft fruits and vegies. From 6-7mths. My twins are know 9 mths and still have no teeth. They eat pieces of food, eat any thing i put infront of them. They started solids at 5.5 mths. If solids are introduced before 4mths there are higher risks of digistive probelms & kidney damage.

3 1/2 months my son is 17lbs 26 inches and getting teeth so i figured id try and he loves it good luck!

[deleted account]

Just start with a spoonful. I would wait until 3 months atleast b/c it can block up there intestine and make them constipated and that is terrible to watch your baby suffer like that. So start with small smounts and gradually increase to make sure baby is digesting properly

I started my daughter on baby rice when she was like 2 months. I felt she wasn't getting enough to eat. What i did was i would mix a about a table spoon for 4 ounces in her bottle with breast milk or formula. I only gave it to her before bed tho cause she slept better. On other foods like fruits and veggies i started her at 4 months with meats you suppose to wait until 6 to 8 months. If you babies stomach doesn't agree with it you should hold off for a couple of weeks. A couple of weeks can make a difference.

It depends on your baby. Mine is always hungry and 10 oz bottles aren't filling for him, so we went to pablum at 4 months and then started introducing some veg and fruit at 5 months.. Watch for signs your baby is ready and don't start too early you'll cause all manner of digestive problems

My daughter started rice cereal at 3 months. At 4 months she started baby oatmeal cereal. At 4.5 months she started the stage one fruits and veggies. I was told to go ahead and start her because she would still be hungry after her bottles and that you should never put cereal in the bottle. She started with her morning bottle and a tablespoon of the cereal mixed with 3 tablespoons of formula, then her normal bottle schedule during the day and another bowl at her "dinner time". She didn't start solids 3 times a day until 4 months. I would offer her the cereal and she would happily open her mouth for it and when she stopped opening I stopped feeding her, but I always gave her the bottle first, that is the primary source of nutrition at that age!

Most pediatricians will tell you to wait for 6 months. If they can sit up and hold themselves up, I would go ahead now. But again, like all babies being different, all mothers are as well. We typically follow suit in what our parents did. My mom started us about 3 months, and I did with my daughter as well. She could sit up, hold herself up and had a tooth... so we were on a roll! But it is good to wait till 3/4 months because their little bellies can not tolerate solids early on.

If you can, it's best to give your baby formula until he's really ready for solids like apples and veggies. Cereal is great to fill them up, but then they go a while without drinking more of the vitamins and nutrients they need so badly when they're little! Our doctor told us never to add cereal to a bottle - The baby can easily choke. Just hold out until your baby is babbling and moving his mouth enough to shove a spoon in there lol. My son is 4 months, and we just started cereal and fruit at the same time. He loves it!

I started my son at about 2 months with cereal in his bottle. We started with less than a tsp. and worked our way up. He took to it quite well. He started on baby food at about 5 months. You will know when your baby is ready to try solids. When you notice him staring at you when you eat try solids and if he doesn't like it wait a week or so and try again.

That all depends on the baby my son started eating baby rice at 3 months because he was drinking a lot of formula and just couldn't get full, after he started cereal he was good though.

i don't agree with any parent telling you what AGE you SHOULD give rice or solids to your baby...... as a parent you will know when formula/breast milk isnt enough as well as your child telling you..
My first child started using rice at 3 months, it was obvious that formula just wasn't enough as he was constantly and consistently finish ALL of his bottles, and when i added the rice he was satisfied...... he started on solids at 6 1/2 months as rice and milk formula again was not satisfying him, he has been on solid food ever since, which has now been 18 months.
My daughter who is 1 started on rice at 5 months after bottles were not sufficient, she did not take to this so well, so was started on solid foods such as mash potatoe etc, my daughter has only recently in the few of months moved more onto solids than bottles...

in essence ALL and ANY advice will always be great, but the ones that tell you the most are your children, just because i, or others started using rice/solid foods at certian ages doesn't mean it will work for you or oters

my son started cereal at 4 months because he was ONLY formula fed... 6 months usually for breast fed babies... and, only introduce one new food every 5 days to make sure they are not allergic...and if they are, you'll know exactly what the food is!! gerber has their packages marked as first, second, and third foods... only one ingredient, simple foods to start!

i started my son on cereal at 2 months (he was spitting up all the time) and he took just fine to it, and then he was on baby food by 3 months. he is now 5 months and very happy and healthy (and he loves his food!) just watch your baby, and if you want to try it go ahead...if your baby handles it okay then continue, if not then wait a few more weeks to try again. : )

My mum told me to look for signs that the baby is ready - like making chewing motions as he watched me eating. And waiting til the baby can sit up with assistance at least is a good idea. The baby should be able to hold his/her head up. But as for the Dr.'s recommendations, all babies are different. My brother started with rice cereal at 4 months and so did my son. But I was 9 months before I'd eat solids. If the baby takes to it you'll know. Just watch how much gets spit back out (some will anyway though) and see how it goes after (gas pains or constipation can occur)... Start off with just one tablespoon of rice mixed with water, breast milk, or formula if that's what your baby's used to. I prefer just using bottled water. I buy the big 4 liter jug and leave it under the cupboard so it's room temperature.
Good luck! :)

When my baby was 2 months old I started to put a little rice cereal in his bottle to help him sleep better and we started to give him baby foods at 3 months. Your baby will let you know when they are ready to eat baby food. If he/she can swallow most of it without it coming out of his mouth, then he is ready. Don't go overboard with the cereal in the bottle, though, I just used the scoop from the formula and put a scoop and a half to start.

my mother tried to get me to feed my daughter cereal at 1 1/2 months.we came to an agreement that we would try it at 3 months.she loved it.it made my life so much more simple.less formula to mix up.i made her cereal with formula instead of water so she was still getting plenty of formula.by 7 months she was on nothing but graduate meals and cereal except before bedtime.its all about your baby and you.

well i'd say let ur baby tell u when they are ready, but as for me i started my daughter who is now 2 yrs old on cereal bottles when she was like 2 months. she simply wasnt getting enough to eat with just the milk. it eventually led to her weening off her bottle by the age of 7 months going straight to gerber graduates meals. i asked the doc if this was normal, he told me that if she seems to tollerate the food then let her. now she is not a picky eater, she loves just about everything she eats and she is very active.

My doctor told me to wait until 4 months. So that's what I did :)

As for solids, wait at least a few weeks AFTER you start your baby on the cereal, that way you know the cereal does not mess up your baby's system since there are some babies that cannot tolerate certain things. When you do start solids, do one food a week. This will give you enough time to see if an allergic reaction occurs from one type of food (Green beans one week, peas the next week, and so on).

My mother gave me some great advice. Start your baby on veggies FIRST, b/c usually if you start babies on fruits first, they won't eat their veggies. So try the veggies before you try the fruits.

Alot of people don't know this but children lack the enzyme to digest solids properly until their first tooth arrives. I do not recommend any solids until then. Both our children were not given rice cereal until that first tooth came out.

my dr also said 4 month for cereal, when he was 5 months bottles and cereal in the morning and at night weren't enough it was like he was still hungry so i started a veggie for lunch after his bottle, then a fruit in the afternon after that bottle. He's happy as a clam now. :)

It's best to wait until your baby is 4 months old... Your baby hasn't finished developing all of the digestive needs before the 4 month mark.... See how your baby does w/ cereal before starting the baby solids.... also 4 weeks in recommended before switching to the next food items so check for any food allergies...

i hope this helps you : )

The doctor told me to wait til my son was 6 months old because of the same reason that Ricky stated. I think my son was 5 1/2 months when I decided to try it.
