Hi Kelly. I would not give your baby cereal just yet. Her digestive trac has not fully formed yet and that could cause more problems later on. You should try either doing just formula or just breastmilk and just increase the ounces you give her. I work in a Daycare and I have a chile of my own. He was wanting to eat every hour to two hours so I finally just had to increase the ounces he was getting. Breastmilk is a thin liquid and I know it is a better source of nutrition for your baby but is is also digested faster than formula so if you choose just one of the methods then you might come out better or you could breast feed the amount you are giving her now and increase the formula ounces at her next feeding.

If you are still checking this thread, I hope you decided against it.She really is too little. Remember that a baby's stomach is not ready to digest starches until age 4-6 (bare minimum) months. Breast milk and formula contain milk sugar, which is easily digested, but infant cereal contains starch, which is not easily digested by infants until later on. Therefore, giving cereal can cause intestinal distress, including cramping, bloating, diarrhea or excessive gas.

My son started with rice cereal when he was 5 weeks old. Rice cereal are adjusted to babies, even if they're not 4 months old. It's even better to give your baby rice cereal than to give her an extra spoon of formula. It's even better for her because she learns new flavours. When you describe your daughter, she sounds just like my son. And believe me, I have talked to doctors, nurses, pharmacists. It's save as long as you don't give to much (maybe just at night).
Also I discoverd that my child was just thirsty sometimes. So I gave him a little water. There are all these rules, but remember that no child is the same, and if your daughter is so hungry, she must be fed!

I started giving my son cereal at 2 weeks. He was breast fed and formula feed as well and it just wasn't enough for him. I got him a feeder and made the cereal thin and gave that to him a few times a day. He's 8 months old now and will try any food, so far there's nothing he won't eat.

I had to give my son baby cereal when he was 2 months old. He was always hungry. After I started giving it to him he didnt eat as often and he slept a littler better. I know you are not suppose to, but I wasn't going to let my son be hungry all the time. It felt cruel to me to see him hungry and not do anything about it. You are going to hear everything on the subject, so do what you feel is right at that moment.

I started my son on Ceral when he was 2 & / months old because he just wanted to eat. And yes I did put in his bottle since he didn't know what to do with a spoon. So I had acouple of bottles that had a bigger nipple hole so the formula and ceral could be sucked out. And he was fine. My mother gave me the idea and my doctor was okey with it. But we just did it only once a day so I did it for his last feeding at night. Which would sit in his belly and he slept better to. So do what you feel is right. Mothers usually doing the right thing with there children. Good luck Kristin

I started giving my son pablum (the cereal) at about five months, and then jars of baby food at six months. He was really happy with that and had a seamless transition (no constipation, no nothing). At about 6.5 months I started letting him have pieces of watermelon/pineapple and pizza crusts (stuff he could teeth on and enjoy the taste of at the same time).
At 7 weeks old, it would not be a good idea to start on the pablum quite yet, unless she is draining you dry and screaming for more. Normally, you produce based on what she eats, but you may be a day or two behind when she has an appetite increase. Talk to a doctor if you really want to add pablum to the mix so you can fully understand the dangers/ benefits at her age.

I'm reading some of the other posts and I agree and disagree with them. Every child is different so I wouldn't try her on anything until you talk with your doctor. When my daughter was born I breastfed for 8 weeks, but in the end, I just wasn't producing enough milk so I had to switch her to formula. My daughter was also very tiny cause she wasn't gaining enough weight due to the lack of milk. My doctor suggested I start giving her the pablum once a day, perferably at the last feeding before bed. He told me to take those lil baby spoons and start with one scoop, mix with water til it's got a thick watery texture. He told me to feed it to her before I give her a bottle, like maybe 5 little spoonfuls. Kinda pour it into her mouth. She might gag at first, but that's normal. After about 2 weeks, you go up to 2 scoops, equaling 10 lil spoonfuls. Then you gradually build up.
When I was told to do that I was scared, cause of all the warnings about developing food allergies and how they can't digest it and everything. But my doctor assured me it was ok, he said to do it before the bed feeding cause that way the baby is sleeping which allows their little stomachs to digest everything without interuptions. Doing this worked wonders for my daughter. I noticed she slept longer and better at night because she was actually "full" which was better for us.
My daughter is now 3 and boy is she a good eater! She is at a healthy weight for her age, she's tall for her age, she's very smart and she sleeps so good at night (8pm - 8am). So I guess what I'm saying is ask your doctor about it. Ultimately in the end, you know your child. Only you can make the final decisions on what you want to do to/for your child. Hope that helps!! :)

Emily can you tell me the facts, you claim to know about babies choking and dieing from having cereal put in thier bottles? Babies are more likely to choke on cool boiled water that a slightly thickened bottle of milk. And you claim to be a young mum with common sense - thats why you left you young baby on his own for a whole weekend because you were pissed off at you 'husband'.... So full of common sense.
While were at it my dd gets 2 rusks put in her milk as they give her extra nutrician than just having rice milk. My sis ds has rice cereal in his milk from since he was 4 weeks old. Practically every mother I know puts cereal in thier babies bottle, for the pure simple fact it adds nutrician and also helps them settle. If your baby is drinking the correct amount of milk each day, and Is still hungry, where is the problem in adding a tiny amount of cereal? My dd wouldnt drink enough milk during the day,so I added a cereal to her bottle and she drank it just fine. And I knew it was helping her get that lttle bit more....
As for the choking. Its down to the parents to watch thier children when feeding. To be holding the bottle for them and not have it propped up. The choking is most likely a result of imprope-rpositioning.

I never gave my 3yr old cereal before 6 months. I had to start my 4-month old @ 8 wks because he ended up needing stomach surgery for Pyloric Stenosis and after the surgery he had trouble keeping his formula down, so he was on cereal to "weigh" it down. The Dr gave us a special nipple that is made for thickened liquids. If he didn't have this problem, I would not have started him on cereal til 6 months. I would try to wait til atleast 4 months if possible, but in the end it is your decision.

This is an ADVICE site, not a mom-bashing site!! Going out of your way to make mom's feel badly about something YOU dont' agree with is ridiculous. I never said I was an expert, but when you have 5 children, you experience quite alot. So, how about we treat each other with some respect? "If you don't like it then don't post" EXACTLY!! If you think it's a stupid question, and you can't give constructive advice, then DON'T POST. Be mature about responding to others! You can be true to yourself and what you believe without condemming others for disagreeing or not knowing what to do!

Despite all the recomendations some babies need solids early, not many at 7 weeks but it's not unheard of either. My son started solids at 6 weeks ON recomendations for although he was gaining weight and well he was begging for more but would lose interest in his milk. My daughters also started early at 2 months. Allergies beign caused by early feeding is crap, more often it occurs when after so long without introduction it suddenly appears and the body freaks having thought it had catalogued everything therefore seeing new comers as a threat. Listen to your baby they wont ask for anything they don't need.
actually, allergies do not appear because they havent been introduced to the body...did you know you can become allergic to bee stings, even if you have been stung before and werent allergic? as a little girl, i use to wear wool socks and use wool blankets and be perfectly fine, but now as an adult if i touch it my whole body breaks out in hives. you can develope allergies at all ages, and giving it to them too early is just setting them up for that possibility. i wasnt when i was a baby, but now am allergic to gluten. i cant eat bread, pizza, rolls, subs, pasta.....i cant have anything with gluten in it.....im Italian and i cant eat fricken pasta!!!! and to be quite honost, it sucks! is that what you want for your child?

Hi,
ok, so cereal in the bottle is the best at this age right before bed. My dr told me for both my children. They are too young to know how to eat froma spoon. They say not to give cereal too early because people tend to over feed and then the baby gets over weight. But if you dont want your milk to dry out feed her as much as she wants during the day and before she goes to bed make her a formula bottle with 1 tablesoon of cereal, maybe even a little less to start. If you breast feed the rest of the time which is what I did your milk wont dry up. There is a big growth spurt as mentioned above so its important to keep her on the boob if you are sticking to breast feeding, remember its supply and demand~ hope this helps
first off, i want to say is, "cereal in the bottle is the best at this age right before bed" is a crock of sh!t! giving your child cereal in a bottle is the dumbest thing ive ever heard of a mother doing. there is a reason doctors tell you 6 months (unless the child has reflux) and doing it just so you can catch a little bit more shut eye, is, in my opinion selfish and just out right stupid. there are guidelines for a reason! they dont say to wait until 6 months for your inconvienience, there is a reason. to quote Danielle..
"Plus, making comments that will make another mother feel foolish for asking a question is rude. The whole point of this site is so that we can ask advice from other mothers, so if we are going to particapate, try to be understanding!! :)"
im pretty sure no one is postin to be "rude" if you dont want to hear what other people think, then dont post a question on here. i completely agree with emily, if you think that a 7 week old (or younger at that...) is old enough to get cereal, then you shouldnt be giving advice! and just because you have 5 kids, doesnt make you an expert.
Doctors are doctors for a reason....!!!!! Just because your parents did it doesnt make it right. they didnt know better then! how bout you do a little reasearch! or better yet, ive done it for you!

Usually, your baby will start showing physical signs that he is ready to start on "solid" foods around 5 - 6 months. Some signs to look for are:
Your baby is able to sit up with support.
She holds her head up without help.
He reaches for things and holds them.
When you feed her, she watches the food, waits with her mouth open and then closes her mouth over the foods.
If your baby's tongue always pushes the food out of his mouth, he isn't ready for solids. This tongue action means that he can't move food around inside his mouth.

this is something you should talk to your baby's physician about...especially before trying anything...not only will he/she probably suggest against it, they may be able to give you advice about feeding...also, your baby could be geting into a growth spurt and may need to feed more often to supplement their rapid growth, talk to your doctor...also, try a pacifier or offer your baby their fingers to suck on. sucking is a very VERY strong urge for babies and sometimes they aren't hungry, they just need to suck. and dont let people tell you pacifiers are bad. it is now suggested you offer a child a pacifier before bed or nap time (don't force it and don;t replace it after it falls out naturally) to reduce the risk of SIDS...otherwise, talk to you pediatrician about any change in your babies dietary intake...

There have been studies done that link cereal in bottles to obesity, i know it sounds crazy but i would consult your doc before giving her anything. there could be another medical reason..maybe her also it's normal for babies to eat mine were on the boob ever 2 hours at that age. isn't there one period of time during 24 hours she'll go 4-5 hours without eatting? check with her doc before giving her anything, though it could also cause her to have serious allergies at a young age!

Sure I'm a first time mom, but that doesnt mean common sense escapes me. Children have died from mothers putting cereal in their bottles. That is why we dont do it. Is that simple and nice enough? I can be a bi*ch too, but this is not an appropriate forum. Not everyone knows what to do with their babies, that is why this site was made. how can you have common sense about sometihing you don't know about or are confused over? Cereal isn't a solid... try it. It is still a bottle of formula... you can't even tell by sight that you've thickened it with cereal. It makes a difference in their bellies. ALWAYS ask your doctor when changing any kind of food regimne for your child, but these women are asking for our experiences and opnions, not to be attacked by a 22 yr old 1st time mom who apparently thinks she knows everything about motherhood. wow so many angry responses! Hi Kelly when my son was born 2 years ago he was in the hospital for 8 days because he wouldn't keep any formula down or breast milk they realized he had an allergy to my milk and many formulas and had to go through 4 different ones before he somewhat tolerated one. He still projectile vomited every time he ate so while we were still in the hospital the Peditrician ordered that he have 1 tsp of cereal per 3oz bottle to help keep him from vomiting it all up i got a 2nd opinion and that doctor also suggested it. my son still vomited every time he ate but it was decreased by the rice, and now he is a thriving healthy 2 yr old with absolutley no problems. Oh and i also contacted a pediatric nutritionist and they also agreed it was safe to give my week old baby the cereal. So just ask your peditrician and dont listen to other people each child is different and you shouldnt trust anyone but you doctor. p.s. i am a paramedic, one aunt is a doctor, another aunt a midwife, another a nicu nurse, and my mom is a pharmacist so when it comes to medical i am educated in this department and have learned to ask lots of questions and get the answers from professionals! Not everyone knows what to do, and as 1st time moms that are on here, it is a great place to ask advice from other moms who may have some experience with what your dealing with. I'm 29 years old with 5 children, from the ages of 10 thru newborn... I've dealt with babies since i was 18 years old. I'm not saying I know everything, but I've experienced quite a bit in my time. but the way you talk may make people feel stupid for asking these questions. The point is to try and help, not make people feel stupid.

Quoting Danielle:
I think the picture some of you are seeing in your mind is toatlly incorect... you don't thicken the bottle until it's sludge... you add a teaspoon to a 4-6oz bottle... it thickens it a small amount, so that it is heavier in their bellies. it is still very much a liquid... i keep reading comments about choking hazards!! It isn't THAT thick!!
Plus, making comments that will make another mother feel foolish for asking a question is rude. The whole point of this site is so that we can ask advice from other mothers, so if we are going to particapate, try to be understanding!! :)
Sorry but I think its hard to be understanding when a mother wants to put her babies health and life in danger so the mother can get more sleep. You really think a 7 week old should be getting cereal in their bottle? If so, I dont think you should be giving advice to anyone.
