My daughter will not eat rice or oatmeal cereal...any suggestions?

I had the same problem with my son. For me it came down to my doctor suggesting the Milupa name brand. It's sweeter and has a nice consistency. Hope this helps.

My 4 month old would only eat cereal with any baby food i mix it 1/2 cereal with 1/2 of any baby food and he eats every bite

Well definately dont forget about it. Cereal and Oatmeal are very nutritious for them, and breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Maybe she doesnt like that its so bland? My son was the same way. I buy the Gerber foods, I'm sure at 6 Months your daughter is probably on the stage 2 foods? I used to buy extra of the bananas and mix that in with her cereal or oatmeal, it thins it out a little bit so its not so thick and gives it better flavor :) I also used pears and apples, any fruit will do. You'll have to let me know if that works out for you!

My oldest was the same way... i mixed the cereal with some infant apple juice... he loved it. You could even try buying the flavored ceral with the fruits already in it.

my youngest she couldnt eat it it would cause her to choke so what her gastrologist and eci worker told me was to add it to her bottle that way she could be able to drink it i know they tell you not to do it but the dr said it was fine as long as she gains weight and is able to eat it and i started to give her gerber around 4 months that way she didnt drink as much cereal in the bottle

Have you tried mixing some fruit with the cerel? That always worked for me. It just gives the cerel a little more flavor and changes the texture. Lots of kids have issuses with textures. It usually clears itself up on its on. My 7 year old dealt with texture problems but is fine now.

honestly my daughter never ate cereal nor oatmeal. I tried the oatmeal once she didn't like it, so I never gave her anymore. On the cereal I never put it in her bottle either. If she likes the fruits and veg. then I wouldn't worry that much about it. I'm sure she will be just fine.Now, my daughter is a healthy 6yr old thinking she is 20. So, don't worry to much!!

I had this same issue. I actually found out that they have he premixed cereals/oatmeals. They come in stage "2" jars but the consistency is fine. We started my daughter at almost 5months on this and she LOOVED it. She would not eat the box cereals or rice for anything. Gerber makes them, Walmart carries a brand as well (Cant think of the name off the top of my head) but they have Baby Pooh characters on them and they have a TON of different types of these lil cereals/oatmeals. They have some with fruit mixes and cinnamon.

don't put it in her bottle!! try adding juice instead of milk/formula/water or alittle bit of the fruit. Bananas if she has runny poo.....prune juice if she tends to get constipated with new foods......my son loved it when I mixed it I would put the cereal on one half of the bowl and the fruit/veggie on the other half so he could have the two distinct flavors but still be getting alittle of both in every bite. if you have ever tried the cereals they taste like nothing....just blah! I have tried everything my son has and half the stuff I understood why he didn't want to eat it.. try also warming up apple juice and putting it in there. sometime just the added element of warmth to a babies food gets their interest long enough for them to finish it......

Definitely don't skip the grains though. The iron helps her absorb calcium and proteins! She needs the grains! The grains are chalk-ful of healthy vitamins and minerals itself, not to mention she will actually absorb the healthy fruits and veggies!!

Try mixing it with apple juice or pear juice. Then it doesn't taste so bland! You can also try adding a fruit puree to it so that shes getting the health of the grain with her fruit!

well what i do with my 4 month old is put it in her bottle, maybe a oz and half in 4 oz bottle shake up then put apple sauce in with it just a little and try that... it should work....

I wouldn't worry about the cereal. Its great if they will eat veges and fruit! Mine started with baby rice but now wont touch it after trying veges, fruit and real food. I don't blame her as it isn't very nice tasting.

have you tried all 4 cereals??

if so then you can try adding it to her bottle. put 1/2tablespoon in her 8oz bottle with formula and use a fast flow nipple though b-cuz if she's still in the slow ones it wont pass through it. the varriable flow one work well also.



also you should've given her the jar meats first then veggies and fruits last. at least every doctor that i've asked told me to go that way after they've had the 4 cereals rice first, oats, barley then wheat last for possible allergies.



also there's baby snack cracker type things called baby mum mums that are made from rice and have different flavours. there's the original, vegitable and i've recently found banana flavoured ones.

I don't know if any one else suggested this. But with my eldest I had trouble getting him to eat the cerals. So I added some of the baby food like peas or the fruits with it as well as mixing it with water. He took to it easily. Or theres rice ceral cookies (its a homemade recipe.) It works well too.

dont worry about it.. my little girl never did... my son couldnt get enough of it. every child is different. Dont force her its to much work on some thing that doesnt require that much work. if she is eating other stuff offer her it in a few weeks she may change her mind.

don't be discouraged. My doctor told me that she found it to be more important to push fruits and veggies than cereal. Cereal are just carbs and calories. other countries don't really use cereals and they have less childhood obesity than the US. if she's underweight or you feel like she needs the extra calories, try adding it to her bottle. (about a tablespoon to 6oz.)

well i put a little sugar in the cereal. i know sugar is not the best thing to be given to a baby but it worked. you can also try the fruits that are mixed with cereal in the jars or even buy a jar of apple sauce and mix it right into the cereal that works great as well and not expensive like the jars are

they say never to add cereal to the bottle because it is meant to teach them to eat! have you tried regular oatmeal? they say not to do that either lol but i did and my kdis liked it! i also added half apple sauce half cereal! if no luck ask your kids's dr they can usually give good advise about that kind of thing

My 5 month old won't eat it either. She eats everything else though. I don't worry about it. If she doesn't like it, she doesn't like it. Not a big deal. My 2 year old never would eat it either.

Get slick on her put Regular Applesauce or put her mashed bananas in there and she'd devour them if that does not work. Maybe give her the Rice w/bananas already in it or the baby cereal with apples and bananas thats the one my daughter started out on becuase the regular cereals she didnt like either.. Hope that helps

your not alone there...my little man is 8 months old and i have totally struggled to get him to eat "baby Food" but it just wasn't happening. He just gagged and spat rice cereal out. I decided that instead of forcing it into him i would keep trying differant things. It seemed he just doesn't like the taste of the baby foods, but enjoyed real food tastes. NAtural yogurt with mashed banana is a massive hit, i let him put his hands in it and once he decided that he liked it, he then let me feed him. I have been trying alot of baby led weaning and he seems to really enjoy food this way. its messy but atleast there is finally some food going in. I gave up on processed baby food, as my little man seems to enjoy real tasting foods, not over processed ones...any ways good luck, let me know how u go!

I have three kids and NONE of them ate it. My middle child drank it in her bottle with just water but would not eat it. I just fed them other things. At 6 months she sounds like she's ready for other things like breads, and real cereal. You can make chereos soggy with milk or just feed them to her. They have lots of vitamins as well as iron. =) My kids are healthy and happy. I mean what did babies do before they had rice ceral? lol

to be honest, i don't blame her! have you tasted it? it tastes nasty! my son hate it from a spoon as well. i started mixing it with milk & bottle-feeding him. that was probably the easy way out more than anything because he was just way too hungry (i was producing 35-40 oz a day and it still wasn't enough for him at 4.5 months), what i probably should have done is mixed in some fruit or veggie puree into it & then spoon feeding it to him. i know this now, i wish someone would have told me this back then. try, see if he likes it. my son got really gassy & constipated from rice cereal. now i use either oatmeal or multi-grain from nature's best ($2 at target).
if she still doesn't want it, let it go. soon enough, she'll eat other carbs (like pasta & potatoes & then maybe rice, quinoa, barley -- whatever else you want, so cereal won't be a problem). i would try feeding her some butter nut squash puree or sweet potato puree (just be sure to thin it out -- if it's too thick, it tends to stick to the roof of their mouth & that makes them gag or choke). that would also create a nice transition for cereal. good luck!

Nah, don't worry too much about it. It's not a nutritional value thing, just a stepping stone on the way to regular baby foods. My daughter wasn't thrilled with rice cereal or oatmeal, but does just fine with the baby food. Besides, the main nutritional aspect of their diets is still the breastmilk/formula.

My daughter doesn't care for the textures of the rice cereal or oatmeal. Have you tried the whole grain yogurt cereal? I mix that with juice for her and she really likes it.

My youngest wouldn't take ceral until he was 8 months old. He just didn't like it, now he loves it. Be patient, she'll let you know when she's ready. :)

put the fruits in the cereal (still add water or formula) she will like that and are you using breast milk or formula to thin it out just plain water wont tast very good esp if she is already eating pures also try different consistancys make it a little thinner or a little thicker

IF SHE WONT EAT IT SHES NOT READY!! Do not add it to her bottle, its really no recommended unless your baby has reflux, If a baby wont eat cereal from a spoon they are not ready for solids, solid foods are not required until a baby is 1 year of age, often people introduce solids at 4-6 months but its not needed until later in life, so if she wont take it just try it once a week until shes ready and willing. If shes doing okay with fruits and veggies you could try a mix of rice and veggies. Its usually recommended that fruits be introduced last since once babies have the sweet flavors they may not want anything else.
