My son's belly button has a hernia! Anybody else have this problem???

it's was good to hear all the feed back from all this I am dealing with this myself my son is gonna be 2 mnths and i am sooo worried about it , I didn't know there was so many of us mom's going or went through this but like i tell myself everyday nd pray that everything will be ok . The thing that scared me the most is the surgery part ...

MySon has the same condition but he is five plus and it has not gone. I am told they need to do a surgery. Apart from that he is good to go

my son has had 2 hernias each one he has had removed, they really dont hurt.

My daughter had a herniated umbilical as well. She got it around 2 weeks old. It was very large and was worse when she cried. She is now 14 months and now she just has extra skin. It started going away when she became a full time walker. I noticed with her that the hernia didn't hurt her but it seemed like gas would lodge in it so she would have some screaming battles because of the gas but now she is fine. There isn't anything you can do for it but if its not gone by the time hes 3 or 4 then they start talking about surgery but i wouldn't worry they seem to take care of it all by themself. Good luck!

My son was born with a herina, his doctor told us that by age 4 if its not gone then he will have to had surgery, his hernia actually helps me to know if he has a stomache ache or he needs to poo, it will get big before it gets small. don't worry, your not alone.

My 3 year old had an herina. It did the same everytime she was upset it'd stick out further. She is now 3 and it is almost gone. Don't worry about it. It is not harmful or painful. But my 3 year old is very modest about her bellybutton she thinks its the most private place on her body but now that it doesn't stick out she is starting to forget & care about it so much. We always put onesizes on her b/c it held it in b/c we got tired of explaining it to people. Hope that helps. I did not do nothing People told me to do alot of stuff to it but I ignored it and be assure that it does go away just takes a while. My daughters hernia started out bigger than a quarter. Please don't let anyone scare you. Umbilical hernias are more common than you'd think and if it were a serious health issue, your doctor would have taken action immediately. Most of the women here have been told the same thing that I was told for my daughter, that it should go away on its own. A hernia is not a tear, it is a condition when some organs slip through a space that shouldn't be there. It can happen in many places on the body. The baby's ab muscles did not close up completely before he was born, so the intestines can slip in and out of the opening into the belly button. There are so many wives tales that you may hear from family members about tying a belt around it, etc. Honestly it is a waiting game. Everyone is different. My daughter's gradually got smaller over the months and closed up around 10-12 months. I did notice that when she was very young its seemed to cause her discomfort while her intestines were processing food (getting ready to poop). At those times I would try to hold it in to keep it from slipping in and out. After the first few months the discomfort stopped for her. Umbilical hernia generally do not need to be operated on unless the child becomes much older and it hasn't resolved itself or if a serious blockage occurs. Also, your child is not doomed to have an outie belly button for the rest of their lives. When my daughter was born, my mom told be that my belly was the same way and I am very much an innie!

My son had one when he was bron and it went away at 5 months. He's 9 months now and you can't tell that he had one

I had one when I was little. It stuck out about 2 or 3 inches. I had it till I was around 3 year's old. It went away on it's own though.

My four year old daughter had one when she was born, it went away in the first year. There's nothing you can really do to help him.
It just means when he is older he will have an outtie belly button.

my daughter was also born with a hernia. i was told to keep an eye on it however it should fix itself. i had her hernia checked regularly and it healed itself by the time she was 2.

IT CAN GO AWAY ON ITS OWN, most of the time they do, very rarely have to op!
my daughter was born with a HUGE one, i was so sacred
but it had gone down by the time she was 3/4 months...maybe earlier, shes is now a happy 13month old and you would never guess she had one!x

Oh and it does act differently than normal hernias, since it wasnt caused by pressure, their abdominal wall/muscles just didnt finish closing in utero. (which is why they can resolve themselves)

How old is he?? My daughter was born with one and I freaked out about it I was so worried, but it doesnt bother her, and it has gone down to the point its almost gone! (shes 3 months and I really didnt believe the Drs when they said it would)

My son had a hernia as well; it was quite large. It went away by itself by the time he was about five months old. I wouldn't worry about it!

my son just came home from a successful hernia operation. He is only 3 months old. I don't know who told you it would go away on it's own, but it wont. A hernia is a serious medical condition that can become life threatening. If a piece of intestine goes through the torn stomach lining (that's what a hernia is, torn muscle lining) it can twist, which will cut blood flow to that area of the intestine, and they would have to remove the dead portion of intestine. I would really suggest you go to a pediatric surgeon, because it needs to be fixed. Depending on the severity of it, the surgery can sometimes be put off until they are older. My son's was severe and had to be fixed right away. Make sure to watch out for fever over 101, a stop in bowel movements, or vomiting, which can be signs that the intestine has twisted. Don't wait, go to a dr asap!

My daughter doesn't, but our neighbor's granddaughter does. It sticks out ridiculously and is very jarring to look at. She's a year old. I don't know when she got it or when it'll go away though.

yes my son was born with one the docter said the same thing to me an they will go away once he becomes more active like rolling over an starting to crawl the tummy will get more exercise an should close up the hole that's causing the hernia but it shouldn't be painful that is just the hole letting in more liquids than usual.... on the other hand my younger sister had an outty belly button till she was 14 years old but there was nothing wrong with it it never grew or hurt it was jus there but then she felt she didnt want it anymore an jus got it sewed up with no problums

My daughter had a hernia so bad it looked like a penis! It was awful, people would see it and gasp! LOL Hers cleared up all by itself though, by the time she was 6 months old. Now, you'd never even know she had one. :) Hernias can become twisted though, but you can tell- it will turn colors (blue, black) not to be confused with if it looks like there's poo in it, b/c there IS. My daighter's hernia would occasionally look a little green, and I would get all worried, then she'd have a bowel movement adn the color would be gone! Sounds gross, but it's true.

My Son is now 2 years old n yes he was born with a hernia, i was told but the doctors it would go away and i was very concerned... My husband was born with one also and his has gone away just keep a check on it and if it gets bigger or anything take him to the doctors... My sons is still there but it has gone down heaps and u can barely notice it... I dont think there is anything u can do but i really believe it doesnt hurt them my son never noticed it and to this day he still doesnt... I hope this helps, all the best.
