So my son is 3 1/2 months now and I am trying to get a routine down so he will get to sleep earlier, I try to feed him a little extra but he still wakes up about 4 hours later. My hubby wont let me give him rice cereal yet (he's paranoid). My son also sleeps in a bassinet next to my bed, I am nervous about him sleeping in his own room but I heard it helps them sleep through the night.

Save our sleep is an amazing book. i sugggest you give it a read, as it has lots of followers and fans! at this age, babies know the difference between day and night, and should be able to sleep at least 5hr stretches. however dont expect him to sleep thru the night as he's still quite young for this. Rice cereal makes no difference to sleep, as it takes them a long time to learn to eat lots of it at once, and it doesnt fill them up anyway. the purpose of it is an easy food to teach babies to eat and get their iron up, and mix with other foods etc. my son is 19months and eats what we do, he still wakes up at night so being hungry isnt always why they are waking. perhaps if you put him in a different room you wont hear him when he stirs at night and he may put himself back to sleep?

Ive found with my baby that keeping her awake longer just befor bedtime, playing with her, constantly changing activities when she gets grumpy and bored, and when shes really crabby, I give her a quick feed, taking her off befor she falls asleep and then giving her a nice warm bath. She really seems to respond well to this and now sleeps from 8ish till 3amish. But every baby is different... hope this helps.. :o)

i brought a book called 'Save our sleep' by Tizzie Hall, she is an international seller.. i got that when my son was 1, two months ago, but she has routines from birth/2 wks and its pure magic. Levi (my son) was so difficult from birth he woke hourly cried alot feed hourly (breast feed) was still in my room most nights in my bed, i was exhausted.. with in 3 days of having the book he went from all that to sleeping through the night in his own room in his own bed no fuss at all! i was lost before it my first she slept through the night the day she came home from hospital. i already have the book ear marked for when my twins arrive in a few months

He is still to young yet to be able to have any control over his sleeping patterns. Every child is different, so it's really hard to say what can and can't help your child with sleeping. If he was older I would say try feeding him solids before bed, but he is still really a newborn right now. Just make sure you sleep and nap when he does. You will know when it is the right time to feed him cereal, don't always go by the 'text book' ages.
