and for next time instead of giving orange juice to give vit c, apple juice is better, still contains vit c but because it is less acid it doesn't irritate infections especially when they affect the ears - a tip from my aunt, an audiologist

yeah! after enough vicks products used in rotation, and a little garlic/lemon juice.. we have cleared our chest of that nasty (Clear though, signifying lack of infection) mucas.. still just as happy as can be... never any fever..

Quoting Monya:

i DO take my daughter to the doctor.. when necessary.. and yes.. my doctor will give antibiotics "to make the grandmother happy" see the quotes.. they are there for a reason.. i keep intouch with her doctor and nurse..
when over antiboticed.. they quit working.. my brother nearly died as a young child.. from "antibotics to make grandmother happy" because when he REALLY needed an antibotic.. he had been given so much.. his body did not us it correctly..

thanks anyway..

If this is your doctors point of view id suggest getting a new one!

im sorry to here about your brother, no wonder your not keen on antibiotics!

as i mentioned before though, saline and vicks works wonders!

colds take ages to go away... a week isnt too long for a cold to stick around! if it goes on longer than two weeks... maybe then seek medical advice! :)

I'm having the same problem with my 10 month old little girl at the moment. I took her to the Dr today because she hasn't been eating, and it turns out she has tonsilitis as well as a head cold. Dr was great, he didn't prescribe anything though, I remember being fed penicillin as a child like it was going out of fashion, but he doesn't like to do that. I've been giving my little girl an infant paracetamol (calpol) before bedtime which is just reducing her temperature as she is very hot. I bought a little gadget which sounds absolutely disgusting, but is working wonders. She's got a very runny stuffed up nose and wiping with a tissue was just making her nose sore, I can't remember the name, but it's like a little hose with a bulb for collecting mucus and snot. yuck! but you aim it just inside her nose and suck on the little hose, don't worry nothing will get in your mouth! and it sucks out all the stuff from her nose, it doesn't hurt and won't harm but it is a genius idea! It cost around £5 and is washable and you could sterilise it too, I got mine from the chemist (pharmacist). As mentioned above Vicks vapo rub works a treat, just a little rubbed on her chest works, I hope this helps you, I know how you're feeling! There's not much we can do to help, just lots of cuddles and sympathy x

i agree with all the mummies... go see your Doctor!
I thought my daughter had a cold, turned out to be a middle ear infection!

if you want something to help her out until you can get in to see the doctor... go speak to the pharmisist... they are great for advice!

as mentioned before, a simple saline nasel drop would work wonders... try keep her out of airconed rooms... and vicks vapour rub is great.... just put some on her chest and the bottom of her feet to help clear her nose!

dont be scared of putting an infant on antibiotics... doctors are very careful when perscribing them... they dont just give them out for fun! if they do give them to you its with good reason!

antibiotics are only for bacterial infections not viral....so i would take your baby to the dr because only drs can tell you if its bacterial or viral...most colds are viral so all you really can do is treat the symptoms....saline is great for clearing up their nose cold air humidifiers work sometimes too...but i would always talk to your dr before giving any other remedies that have meds in them

antibiotics are for infection and for a 8mth old with an infection i would put them on it to clear up the infection fast.if she hasn't gotten much better in that week id go to her doctor to rule out infection.for a cold etc i would recommend going to a health store and check out herbal cough medicines i found them good with my first child.theres a good range of herbal items for babys.so good luck and quick recovery for the little baby.

There is a baby wash you can bye it has Mentholatum in it and you just use it like a bubble bath i use it on my daughter and she seems to do better after wards. They generally won't prescribe medicine for your baby at the doctors office anyways. Just use saline nose spray. I have also heard if you breast feed than you can use your breast milk to spray inside there nose to relieve them of the stuffy nose. I hope this helps. There is nothing worse than when your baby is sick and there is few things you can do for them.

Well, my first thought would be to take your baby to the doctor/pediatrician just to make sure it is only a cold... generally antibiotics don't get prescribed for a common cold. If she has a stuffy/runny nose, you can always try a saline spray (baby Hydrasense is great) 5 or 6 times a day and a warm air humidifier at night and during naps. Good luck!
