My daughter was in the nicu for nearly a week because she was very very jaundiced. The levels of bilirubin in her blood were high enough to mess up other chemicals in her blood so she wasn't a happy baby. We had to formula feed her because she was too jaundiced to be taken out from the lights to be fed for the first couple days. When we brought her home she was still a bit jaundiced but we've really had no problems other than the usual.

We've been lucky. The only problem we've had in the 6 months since we brought him home was the flu 2 weeks ago. It was a little scary-he'd just gotten his flu shot, but apparently a little too late, since his dad caught it about a week before that and passed it along to us-but he was fine after a few days of Motrin and Benadryl. While he was in the NICU, the only problems he had were jaundice and bradycardia. He was 8 weeks early due to PreE, so of course had to be on a feeding tube for a few weeks, but he came off it pretty fast and came home at 5 weeks old.

My daughter was in the NICU b/c she was 12 weeks premature. She has PVL (periventicular leukomalacia). Basically due to a lack of oxygen during her birth (emergency c-section due to cord prolapse) parts of her brain died and then the remaining "holes" filled with liquid to form cysts. We later learned that it was so severe her nuerologist didn't expect her to walk...BUT SHE DOES!!! This increases her odds of CP (but no signs of it yet at almost 2 yrs) and learning disabilities. She had pneumonia last year and we have to be very careful about any illness since her lungs were so underdeveloped at birth. We are super happy with her progress and couldn't be happier!!

we have been fairly lucky. Kaylee also was born due to placental abruption but she was 12 weeks early. when she came home from the NICU it has pretty well been a smooth ride for us other than having tubes put in her ears, tonsils and adenoids out, and her tongue clipped twice. She has asthma but nothing major. :D

My son was in the nicu immediately after he was born due to me having a placental abruption. When he was delivered he wasnt breathing so the drs had to bring him back. He also started having seizures which he still has. He spent 3 weeks in the nicu where he was on a vent for 3 days and was having seizures for a week. They also had to put in a NG tube. Now he is 4 years old and has cerebral palsy, sickle cell disease, asthma, and seizures. Back in 2006 he had RSV in which he stayed 2 months.

my daughter was diagnosed with lactose intolerance and cows milk protein intolerance 3 months after being admitted to NICU. She was taken there when she was 24 hrs old as she couldnt breathe nor was she feeding. She had to have oxygen and a chest x-ray which showed nothing apparently. They tried feeding her with an NG tube but she was too small for it to fit up her nose so they brought her back to me and told me to carry on Breastfeeding her then try her with Formula if she still sicks up. I wish they could have done some sort of test back then to diagnose her earlier as she was in loads of pain. She also had echogenic bowel when she was inside of me..and if the docs had listened to me about this or even read my pregnancy notes they may have found out the problem earlier rather than later.

My son had RSV....and they are hoping that the symptoms do not continue and turn into asthma... but he was in the NICU because he had problems with his blood sugar, and had an elevated white blood cell count, and was jaundance (sp?)......
