My son is 13 months old. On a few occasions he has suddenly woken from a deep sleep and SCREAMED the place down. The first time was within a month or two of having him, and was very short, a few screams, we picked him up and cuddled him and he was asleep again. The second took a bit longer to settle him. Today he woke about 45 minutes after going down for a sleep during the day. It was so distressing, as my son is a very easy going child, who very rarely does anything more than grizzle during the day. As far as I knew, he was sound asleep and then I heard a gut wrenching scream from his room that didn't stop. I rocked him, changed his nappy, tried a dummy, gave him a bottle (which he stopped screaming long enough to drink) and walked around cuddling and rocking him. Nothing helped. For an hour and a half he screamed at the top of his lungs until he finally seemed too tired to go on and just sobbed very quietly in his cot for the next two hours.
My mum suggested that he may be having Night Terrors. I have looked at information on the internet, but am not sure if it is something I need to do anything about. The main thing that I could gather is that it tends to be in young children (not as common in babies) and can be triggered by an event in their lives. Within a week and a half of the incident today, he had a small operation on his back to remove a sample of tissue for a biopsy, as we are going through the process of trying to diagnose something that is making his skin not normal. Maybe this could have caused terrors?
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? Leave it and see if he grows out of it (it isn't happening regularly enough to be disruptive) or go to a doctor? A bit lost as to what to do.
