Normal for a 4 month old??!

1. My son has reflux, he is on medication for. I am breastfeeding, and have cut out dairy due to him not tolerating it. He just started within this week kicking his feet constantly, pushing his foot on my leg to push his body upwards (like arching his back I guess you could say), locks his feet together touching at the ankles then like pulls them apart real hard all while nursing! Is his medication no longer working? I'm also giving him rice cereal per his pediatrician for the reflux.

2. He has also started to nurse a bit and try chewing on his fists which ends w/him chewing on his fists then going back to nursing... is he teething? His gums are somewhat whitish (not thrush white, but like if they were swollen white... make sense?) and he has a slight diaper rash.

3. And another thing... He has always screeched w/delight since about 2.5/3 months old. But now while at home (not if we go anywhere, to a family members house, etc) he screeches really loud! CONSTANTLY!! Sometimes he screeches while wanting to feed, sometimes just because and I can not for the life of me tell the difference, I just try and offer him a feeding like every 30 minutes while he is doing this screeching thing. Sometimes it sounds like when a toddler is throwing a temper tantrum and does that scream that is a real high pitched screech. Is this pain? Anyone else experience this? He is an over all happy baby. And another reason I have a concern about this is if I don't offer him feedings while he is screeching by the time he starts to cry he is become so worked up so quickly after he starts to cry that it is hard to get him to latch on. He screeches no matter the time of day, evening, or night (unless he is sleeping of course).

4. And he also wakes from his naps crying like if he was terrified (easiest way to explain it) and shaking. What is this waking him up?

Thanks moms!! I just want to know if this is all normal and any advice you may have! The screeching is ear piercing and give me a head ache.

My daughter often doesn't tell me she's hungry when we are busy playing or out and about and then when I tell her it's time to eat, it's like all of a sudden she realizes she's hungry and eats like I haven't fed her all day! I am the same way though. I can go all day without eating if I forget and I wont even have a second thought but when someone reminds me, all of a sudden I'm starving!
Your baby will likely grow out of it but it's nothing to worry about, just make sure he's eating enough =)
Wheat can also cause really bad reflux. I would say milk and wheat are the worst. You can try removing wheat from your diet for two weeks and see if it makes a difference.

Thank you all!! I had a feeling it may be night terrors as normally when he cries I can calm him w/out picking him up if need be (so he doesn't think he can cry and I'll pick him up), but w/this me touching him.. talking to him... nothing helps, and even picking him up it take a couple minutes for him to realize that I actually picked him up or something. I never even thought of it being a side affect. I don't care for the medication either, but there is more foods that I just don't consume other then the dairy. I don't generally eat (since having baby) spicy foods, chocolate/candy, caffeine ( I was a caffeine-a-holic!) and I don't take prenatal vitamins because the iron is too much for me... and w/eating mostly red meat I don't really need the extra iron, my iron has always been good. The only thing on the list that I do consume is the wheat products, chicken, beef (main meat eaten in my house), small amounts of green peppers.
Jessie, I was going to try that the other day, but I wasn't sure if it would be very comfy for him, I normally cradle him w/my knee below my arm and holding him at about 45 degree angel as that seems to be the angle suggested for babies w/reflux. I might try that position next. :) That had to be a rough 13 months w/out knowing he had a milk allergy. Sorry you had to go through that for sooo long.

One more quick question..... if you don't mind.... he often doesn't let me know he is hungry. For instance last night we went shopping. Left at 7:30, got back at 8:30, nursed him just because. Then we ate, did some things around the house. And at 11 when we finally sat down, I looked at my hubby and asked him if I had feed baby and forgot, he said no, so I went to feed him and he acted like he was starving.... but didn't make one single fuss, whine, cry, why is this?!?! It makes me nervous.
Thank you all! I didn't have these problems w/my daughter!

Night terrors actually seem to be a pretty common symptom of certain acid reflux drugs. My daughter used to kick like that whenever I would nurse her! The screeching could be anything really. I'm not really sure if that's related. He definitely might be teething by the way you described it! Did you try cutting out other things out from your diet other than milk? There are tons of foods that you may be eating that could be causing reflux. My daughter had terrible acid reflux also. She got to the point where she could barely keep any milk down! The doctor wanted to put her on reflux drugs but I dont trust those meds. The side effects aren't worth it to me. I tried different nursing positions and did the elimination diet for her which was a lot more work but within a couple weeks, she hardly spit up at all anymore and her mood changed 100% and we haven't had a problem with reflux ever since! Here is a good link for some tips on things to try - http://www.acid-reflux-tips.com/your-bre...
Good luck! =)

it might be teething. my daughter did the screeching thing ALL the time the first couple teeth she got in. try some orajel and see if it calms him down. as for the waking up from naps crying and stuff, she did that when she was teething too. i have no clue about the reflux though. but all you can do is try, try again.

I dont know a whole lot about reflux but I would really suggest doing different nursing positions and places to test different things out. Some ideas would be the clutch or football hold and sitting up. actually sit him up with his legs on either side of your thigh and latch him on that way, maybe being upright would help with the reflux? I wish I had known sooner that my son had a milk allergy. we didnt find out until he was 13 months old and we introduced cows milk in a cup. I think a lot of gassy/fussy could have been prevented if I had known to cut out milk from my own diet.
My son went through a screeching phase but it was nowhere near as extensive as you descibed. it was often hard to tell if he was just amusing himself or having some sort or problem though.
look into the night terrors thing, I bet that it could be a drug side affect, that is actually common for a lot of meds. good luck mama

not sure if this will help but the screeching may be a side affect from the medication. at night if he is screeching and shaking he may be having night terrors, they are worse than nightmares. my daughter had them and they are not fun. i would talk to your pediatrician since idk anything about reflux. sorry i dont have anything more helpful and i hope the best for you guys
