It has come to my attention that moms are asking about a lot of medical information or advice. I think that it's great to have communication from other moms about anything that has to do with what has worked for them and all that. Please do not do anything that may affect your child or children without talking to your own medical doctor first. Things that may work for other children may be harmful or could even cause death for others. This is very important. If we feel or if you feel that some advice given may be harmful please let us know right away and we will act on it. Once again, DO NOT CHANGE OR DO ANYTHING WITHOUT TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR FIRST!!

I'm a massage therapist trained in the asian forms of massage. In Chinese medicine the kidneys are associated with "ancestral chi" and reproduction. It may sound weird but massaging you lower back will help with fertility. There are also accupoints that are traditionally used for it as well. You'd have to ask an acupuncterist about those though.

I would never change anything without a dr's ok first but when it comes to like behavior modificatin or redirection please give ideas and i will try any within reason i have 3 special needs kids so advice from others who have been there is always helpfull but you are right when it comes to anything that requires a change in meds or doses of meds even over the counter supplements always check you never know how it will effect your child

Make sure your doctor is a good one tho... because my daughters doctor.. told me recently to give her some meds that only a 6 year old and up can take... mind you she's not even 1 yet.. and is no where near a 6 year olds weight... so common sense also plays a big part in the medical field too... because some docs don't know what they are talking about period...

I do believe that all of our children may have similarities and differences but at the end of the day, you should seek medical advice from one who would best know how to solve the problem. A Dr. It is very helpful to hear that other moms go threw what you may have went threw and find comfort in knowing that their is hope and a solution to the problem.

Love this site and hope to gain some new found "mom friends"

Also take GP dvice with causion. Whenever we go to the gp and they advise on medication we call the paediatrician to ask if it's ok. We're had a few times that the Paediatricain has said DO NOT give that to your baby!!! So also be careful with that.

I completely agree!! I check advice out from other parents, then check things out on line, and then when I finally am able to make it in to the doctor, I discuss everything I have researched to find the correct antidote. (Unless it's an emergency of course!!)

I agree! Sometimes women are posting things that they should be asking a doctor and if it is something that the pediatrician should answer I tell them that. I have three children a five year old son a three year old daughter and three month old daughter. They were all different well the first three months so far!

I definately suggest going holistic...find a natural doc. I have had many issues with my children because dr's think they know everything and are so quick to give your child medications! Its so scary! I go natural...of course there are certain situations you need a dr's help like broken bones and real serious stuff, but other than that......dr's SUCK! Your insurance company pays them to give you crap to make you come back later for more services and take your money one way or another!

i completely agree with this. when i give advise to a mother i make sure to mention that that is what worked for my mom w/ me or me w/ my son b/c i know no one is the same & may react differently to something. i also agree with justice b/c i myself do not like taking perscription or over-the-counter drugs unless absolutely needed so why would i do that to my child.

I agree most of the people on here are not medical personnel and you should be careful.I am a pediatric nurse and I see people everyday who have been misinformed from well meaning friends or family. Even if someone is knowledgable ALWAYS double check.

I think if people are asking for advice, they know what advice to accept or reject...personally i would give home remedies that dont have drugs involved at all, because I dont trust big time drug pushers, and I feel that if that's what you want to do,do it,but dont get caught up out there drugs are dangerous, and not all doctors have your best interest at heart..my son was 3 days old perfectly healthy and they tried to prescribe him every medicine in the book for something he didnt even have...as a test, but they call it "trying it out and seeing what happens" wrong answer! the best person to prescribe or to administer anything to a child is that childs parents unless they feel they should pass the responsibility off to someone else...peace and be safe people

and also i agree with GP's not always knowing whats best as when i was pregnant i had severe reflux and my dr prescribed me a new drug which im sorry i cant remember name of and told me it was safe for baby and when i went the chemist they actually phoned me up whilst i was waiting for script to tell me that there has not been enough medical research done on this product and medical researchers advice against using this while pregnant and breastfeeding!!! so im glad i picked a chemist that cares

i agree a serious medical problem or even a small one should be directed to your GP not other mothers kids are developing more and more allergic issues so what might have worked for one may not be a safe option for another. its ok to get opinions but take everything with a grain of salt

I love it when people you know in real life offer up unwanted and stupid advice... Put alcohol on their gums for teething... UM NO!!!! OR when a pediatrician tells you to drug your child for a long flight. NO! My baby was 4 months old when we flew from Oregon to Texas and he did just fine without me poisoning him! Seriously, when doctors want to prescribe for everything, I wonder if their advice is even worth listening to!

Thank-you for addressing this much needed subject. It is so important when taking advice to tell the dr that someone gave you advice and ask the dr if it is really helpful or if the dr has other advice. Just b/c someone says it works it the outcome may not always end the way it should. Side effects are real, and every body is different. Be careful moms!

I was 19 when I had my children and they just turned 2 in March, I will never get rid of my back pain, they messed up on my epidural and I was put out anyway, I encourage you to ask tons of questions so you don't end up in my situation, I was young and it didn't cross my mind that it could be dangerous, they didn't tell me so I figured I was safe, boy was I wrong, I have permanent nerve damage in my back for the rest of my life and there's nothing I can do to fix it.

Yay Missy!! Thank you for posting something that really needed to be addressed. While some of the 'old-wives' remedies do work wonders for minor things like mild fevers and bellyaches, there is a limit; one that seems too many mom's are willing to push these days. I get lots of calls from girlfriends with little ones; earaches, bellyaches, teething troubles....all asking me for advice. I give them a quick fix like a hot rag to the side of the head or get out the ice pops and baby Tylenol, AND TELL THEM TO CALL THE DOCTOR. While I am confident in my layman's nursing ability, I am not a professional and it really doesn't matter that "my mom was a nurse." And really ladies; when it comes to your children and their very lives.....do you really trust "Mrs. Brady; the next-door-neighbor" and her well-meaning advice???

It is a good idea to not take medical advise from someone who is not trained in the medical field....however, if you know a nurse I would think their advise is pretty reliable...still confirm with a doc.

The specialists and docters who are supposed to make my son better are the ones wanting me to make him sicker by putting that poisen in his body my own brother ended up in hospital with a twisted bowel cus they would not believe he had a milk allergy he nearly died. I will not put my son through that they treatin it as a food allergy and exsma when he only got bad when i stopped feedin him and put him on bottles to go back to work.
They're useless

I'm sorry but in my case i completey disagree as the specialists are the ones makin my son sick not helping him at all! My son has an allergy to milk they put him on prescription for neocate instead of regular milk which was fine. Then a week later he was bright red from head to toe was all blocked up and not breathing propely he started choking regularly and over night he coughed up blood.

The next day we took him to our gp who prescribed antihistamines but told us to keep him on neocate. We have repeatdly asked for the past 2 and a half months for them to laet us take him off it all 4 of them sed no. So now when we boil his veges up for tea we use the vege juice to put into bottles and thats what he drinks. I have also stopped using pinetarsol solution in his bath fatty cream with steriods in it aquoes cream as well as all these products cause a reaction on his skin.

And i am not pumping more of that neocats poisen into his body they will not listen to me or my mum all 4 people who see him for his health and skin.Because they have not met a child allergic to neocate they won't beleive us that he is!!!

Please remember that each child has a different way of reacting to treatments and medications...what works for my son with asthma and eczema may not be the right thing for your child. Advise is great and should always be welcomed but with caution and an open mind....

i agree with you..there are some ppl out there that will do things that are dangerous. For instance, I know a mom who puts alcohol in her baby's bottle to help her sleep, and she even puts asprin her bottles when she gets fussy. The bad thing is she really believes its ok..so i think everyone should be weary about what anyone tells them when it comes to anything medical

yeah, that true, cos somtimes what works for one mum, cannot work for another. u can seek advice from the community and relate it to what the experts have to say, ur doctors are the best to give u medical advice, though somtimes it is neceassry to get outside advice. we hope our contributions to some medical advice are favourable, but do try to get the expert to advice more and that will be your suitable practitioner

Cyndie Saari; Definitely get several other opinions from other docs, including a homeopathic doc or two, and a nutritionalist. I would speak to these others quickly, it sounds as if your child might not process acetaminophen properly, and also check out the probability of PK, and also food or animal allergens.

Always double check with your pharmacist, too. Sometimes they catch little mistakes with prescriptions that can do more harm than good. Example, my old doc once prescribed levaquin which could have seriously caused birth defects.

Yes!!!! So true! I try explain that to relatives of mine who think that a cream for them is fine to put on my daughter. Prescriptions or over the counter creams or medicines are not entirely safe for babies or toddles as the ingredients could be too strong or harmful to them. But I must say, as mothers, we must strongly trust in ourselves to make the right decision! Even if what a doctor says sounds a bit strange, get a different opinion from another doctor. My child's paediatrition diagnosed my daughter with scabies (where on earth would he have gotten that idea... I don't know) but I didn't feel happy with that diagnosis. I soon made out that my daughter had a wheat intollerence. Truce bob, I was right and now she is on a pro-biotic that I've found and it works wonders. Sometimes as mothers, we must trust in our intuition, we have it for a very good reason.

I feel the opposite way, i never listen to anything my doctor says without first checking with other moms. If I want to know whether vaccines cause autism, for example, my doctor is the last person I would trust. I'd much rather speak to the moms of kids that have autism. That way I know I'm getting an honest, true response, not one given after pressure from the goventment or the insurance companies. To each his own, I guess.
