Has anyone had any issues with hair loss after having a baby?
If so, how long did it last and do you have any tips on what I can do about it?

My baby is almost 4 months old and about a week ago I started losing my hair. I am a cosmetologist and I recall learning about postpartum alopecia so I'm aware of the cause of it, but I didn't realize it doesn't happen until 3-6 months after giving birth and I didn't realize it could be this severe. I don't have bald spots or anything like that, but the first day it started, I had been wearing my hair up for a couple days and when I took a shower it was literally falling out in clumps/handfulls. And AT LEAST 15-20 strands come out every time i run my fingers through my hair or take my hair down
My hair is long and I have to wear it up most of the time , which isn't helping matters much. So I'm already planning on getting a lot of it cut off this weekend.

Postpartum alopecia is said to be a kind of normal...im in the same situation.. and it is annoying in the shower, especially with long hair!!! I got my hair shortened and had a perm, afterwards the situation was better :-)

if you are very concerned you could get some vitamin supplements for hair. My doc said it can last up to a year after birth...

If you don't have bald patches, this is completely normal.

Your hair thickens with the hormones during pregnancy. After pregnancy your body adjusts to different hormone levels, and sheds excess hair.

well im glad to hear im not the only one! because im the only one of my friends who has really had issues with it.

i know i will by no means be bald, and i know that its caused by hormone changes so its going to fall out regardless, but i can already tell a difference in the density of my ponytail. having your hair up all of the time can cause hair loss on its own though, no matter what the condition of your health or scalp! so, unfortunately, it does exacerbate all other forms of hair loss. im getting a lot cut off tomorrow so i can wear it down and hopefully it will help! thanks ladies!

My hair didn't start falling out until literally the day my son turned 3 months old. It fell out in clumps like you've described for about a month. Then I got my hair cut and it stopped falling out and my hair has maintained it's thickness. So I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.

Mine did it after my first pregnancy and it is doing it again during my second pregnancy. Postpartum alopecia is so frustrating.

YES this is happening to me!! i actually looked up 'reasons for hair loss' online and found that 3-4 months after having a baby, postpartum alopecia can be common. it started a couple weeks ago and i leave balls of hair sometimes and it freaks out my 2 year old daughter. haha. i don't have any tips, and i also have longish hair...i'm hoping it will stop soon, it's not very pleasant.

Mine is like that too. And don't worry, you are not going to go bald. It will slow down within a couple months and be done usually by the time baby is a year old. When you are pregnant, your hormones change and you actually have more hairs on your head than you did before you got pregnant. A few months after you have the baby, that extra hair starts to fall out because your hormones have regulated and you are no longer able to support that amount of hair growth. This hair will fall out no matter what you do so don't go and cut off your hair just for that reason. And if you find your hair following you around all day on everything you touch, I find it helps to massage your scalp in the shower to get all the loose ones out so it's not falling out all day everywhere you go.
