Rolling over emergency!

I wouldn't worry too much. After all, since he's able to roll stomach-to-back, he will be able to turn himself over whenever he needs to. And he may become an early crawler if you encourage the rolling, putting him at an even smaller chance for SIDS.

at this point, he can move himself, so i wouldn't be too worried. he's gonna sleep how he wants now that he can move around. just make the crib as safe as you can.

I had a public health nurse visit my home for the first year of my son's life so she could help me out with these concerns. If you have this kind of program available in your community I'd take advantage of it, they are so helpful! Anyway, she said that once your baby can roll over he can sleep whichever way he wants. The reason they tell you to lay your baby on his back to sleep is so theres more oxygen available... if he was on his tummy, he could still move his head around and possibly squish his face into the mattress, thereby cutting off the oxygen. But if he can already roll from his tummy to his back then its not a problem, because if he's having trouble breathing he'll be able to roll over to get some air.

I also had a monitor that had a mat under the matteres, if baby stoped breathing it would pick it up and alarm would go off!! that aslo gave me reasurance so i didnt have to get up through the night!! Hope this helps..

Ok. I Asked my Daughter and My Sons doctor the same question. She had told me Once they Mastered Rolling over then They can roll over to breath . There really isnt anything you can do Even with the Wedges, They will roll over those too in time. and if you check on them during the night to roll them back over you will just wear yourself out and have no sleep.

My daughter started doing that at 4 months... my dr had REALLY enforced not to let her sleep on her stomach, so I totally panicked when she would fight me to roll onto her tummy when she'd sleep. I called my dr and told her what was going on, and she told me it was absolutly fine. Put her in on her back and if she rolls she rolls. Shes now 10 months old and I still put her in on her back but she INSTANTLY rolls onto her tummy to sleep!

my son sleeps on his stomach and hes 12 weeks old... hes been sleeping onn his stomach since he was 2weeks, he does not like being on his back and as long as nothing is in his way he should be ok, just make sure that he is not face down... if hes on his tummy and hes breathing fine then make sure he has a clear air way check on him every now and then but if hes fine than leave him... i am a first time mom and the doctors get on me all the time for letting my son sleep on his tummy, but A. hes more comfortable that way and B. he used to spit up alot in his sleep and so being on his back would not have been good

he only has to sleep on his back until he can roll over....so as long as he can roll over every time, i wouldnt worry about it

As long as there's nothing in the crib with him, if he rolls over on his own then it's ok. I was worried about the same thing with my daughter, but the doctor assured me that if she is strong enough to roll over, she's was strong enough to move her head so that she didn't suffocate. You can't sit by the bed all night making sure he doesn't roll over, so I would just try to relax and realize that he'll be ok...

Have you checked out www.guardiansleeper.com? My friend and I designed this for our babies as we were frantic at night. It safely covers and positions your baby on his back.
I hope this helps. I had many tormented nights and there was nothing available when my daughter was tiny.

My daughter slept on her stomach from the time I took her home from the hospital. People would try to tell me that my baby would get SIDs, but I reasoned that if that is how she wanted to sleep, that what I would let her do. She is almost two now, and we never ever had any issues with her sleeping position.

My sons both started doing this at about 4 months. Neither of them had any breathing problems. If the baby is unhappy that way they will either roll back over or cry so you can roll them back over. Don't panic, he'll be fine, he's just developing.



When we were babies our mothers were told to put us on our fronts so we didnt swallow sick in our sleep and choke. We all survived!

If he can roll he should be fine, all my kids slept on there bellie from a few months old had no problem just try keep to one blanket and nothing esle in the crib!!!

my 2 month old sleeps on her stomach and im personally ok with that because she can move her head as much as she wants. but as long as he can roll back over i think he should be ok

My daughter always turns over to sleep on her stomach, she has since she was able to turn over. I tried one of the wedges to prevent that but she hated it. I worried about it all the time but she is almost a year and still sleeping on her stomach.

My son did the same thing when he began to roll over. The doctor told me that if he is capable of rolling over he has good enough head control to lift his head when needed. She told me to continue to put him on his back when laying him down, but if he rolls over not to worry.

They generally say that once a baby is able to roll, the risk of SIDS goes down. Try putting him to sleep with a pacifier (it lowers the risk of SIDS), and remove all bumpers, blankets and toys from his crib. Basically it should be a mattress with a tight-fitting sheet that cannot be pulled off of the mattress. He can wear a blanket sleeper to stay warm.

The sleep positioners can actually cause issues. So I'd avoid wedges and positioners.

A fan in the room is supposed to help.

Having an organic mattress is also supposed to help. One of the suspected causes of SIDS is off-gassing from mattresses. There are also "wraps" that can contain these gasses and keep them away from your child, but I don't know if they're sold in the United States or not.

My daughter has slept on her stomach from day one, she cries if she even rolls onto her back. She will be 4 months old on the 28th. She was in the hospital for the first month and even the nurses were putting her on her stomach. They told me as long as she will move her face away from things and she isnt to hot then she should be fine and it it really bothers you get one of those sleep positioners from walmart that will keep him on his back.

If he is old enough to roll from back to belly than he has enough neck strength to move when he isnt getting enough oxygen. Your baby is ok. SIDS only happens when careless parents leave their children in a cluttered crib, and or leave very small babies who dont have the neck strength to move when they can't breath. When my boys were newborns, and I laid them on their backs, they wouldn't sleep, so I bought one of those pillows that keeps the baby in place and I would put them to sleep sideways. When I would check on them, they had turned over to their tummies, and that was at about 2-3 weeks old. So I'm sure your baby will be ok.

Like many of the other moms, I put my son on his belly to sleep almost from day one, by 6 weeks old he was sleeping thru the nite, about 6 to 8 hours. He slept longer, which meant I got to sleep longer. Once he started rolling over, at about 3 months, I just removed the bumper from the crib and used blanket sleepers so there was nothing for him to smush his face into. My pediatrician told me to let him sleep however he slept the best, because that meant I slept better and needed. My son is now 2 years old and still scares me sometimes, he pulls the blankets over his head while he's sleeping, but I just pull them down and leave him be.

my son has jsut started doing that..i always check him before i go to bed n e put him down to sleep on his back but wen i go to check him hes on his front..i turn him bk over n he stays on his back for the rest of the night x

My doctor told me when my daughter started rolling onto her stomach at night, that if she could roll herself over, she could turn her head so that she didn't suffocate. Even still, I worried, and slept in her room a few nights so that I could hear her breathing, and any odd noises would wake me up instantly. It's easier to pay attention to those things right there rather than through the monitor.

Sure does!  There is some evidence emerging now that babies that are at higest risk for SIDS may have breathing and arousal problems that are mitigated by co sleeping.  The contact with the warm body also lowers cortisol levels in the brain, which may also be something that increases risk for SIDS.  The breathing patterns of the child often follow suit with the adult, and children who have newborn apnea may actually be helped by the parent's breathing.

If he's strong enough to roll back and forth, especially both ways, he is probably strong enough to lift his head if he needs to. The babies at most risk for SIDS are the ones who are not strong enough to move back and forth. At his age, he would probably not do well with a positioner either, especially if he's a bigger boy. There are dozens of theories on it, but as long as he's sleeping with his face turned one side or the other, and you make sure he's on back or side when you put him down, there isn't much else to do. I will add that there are many parents who let their babies sleep on their tummies, I know a couple who could not get their babies to sleep any other way. You might talk to your ped about it, if you are very worried, however.

Yes, my daughter also rolled right over the sleeping wedge to get to her belly. Also, if you are worried about the blanket issue, I was told to use a crocheted or knitted (hand done) blanket if needed because there is breathing room in it. My daughter was arching her back and spinning in circles (with her head in the middle of the bed and her legs at various sides during the night) by three months, so there was no controlling her. I can't blame them, though. I hate sleeping on my back too.

my daughter is now two, but when we brought her home from the hospital i had the double sided wedge in her bassinett and she used to just rll right over it onto her stomach and sleep comfortable all night like that. she was only 1 week old, when i woke up to her on her belly sleeping when she rolled over the wedge. I think that he will be fine. i had talked to her doctor about her rolling onto her tummy and i was worried about the sids, but he told me that if she can roll over she would be fine. and i constantly worry about everything and i still check my daughter 2 or 3 times befor i go to bed myself.

he will be fine if he can get himself there then it's nothing to worry about ( i know easier said then done) when my kids started to roll it was always on to their tummies to sleep. just relax and check on him more when he's asleep. good luck. oh and must of us slept on our bellies as babies

When my son was able to roll over I used the sleep positioner to keep him from rolling over in his sleep...but he soon got too strong for the thing to work...he started rolling over while still in the positioner! So I had to take it away, because he'd roll over and get stuck in the positioner, on his belly. If you are really worried, I'd use one until he gets more daytime rolling over experience. He doesn't have too much longer (another 1 1/2-2 months tops) before the risk of SIDS decreases dramatically, and you won't have to worry about him moving around at night. Hope that helps :)

My son was in the hospital for his first two months and even then the nurses would have him sleep on his stomach from time to time. Based on my experience with that and my son who is now 9 mo I would say to put him to sleep on his back and don't fret if he rolls to his stomach. It's natural for him. Just make sure there isn't anything around him that could suffocate him. My son has been sleeping on his stomach since about 5 mo and use to wedge himself into the corner of his bumpers, so I took his bumpers out until that phase passed.

i reckon it's a stage in development and as he's 4 months he has head control...... you should secure that within 3-4 weeks he'll be rolling back an forth my first week boy done the same then it was his prefered sleeping position :)

My daughter roller from back to belly at 7weeks. and that is when i decided to move her from her bassinet. i talk to my Dr. about this because i thoght it was a little early and he said to go ahead and put her in her crib just leave the plastic on the crib mattress, to help prevent her from breathing in the toxins that could be in her mattress. make sure the crib sheet it nice and snug and wont be easily moved if she rolls over and i should not have to worry bout sids. just told me if it made me feel better to get up and check on her every 2-3 hrs. and she is just fine.



i did have a prob with some of my crib sheets not fitting snuggly so i took a needle and thread to them and hemed them up a little bit so they would fit sung!

He is rolling over now so he will be fine. If you sill find yourself worried over it just go in and check on him threw out the night. eventually your fear will subside. he will be just fine!

Since my daughter has learned to roll over I can put her to sleep on her back or side propped up all around and she still ends up on her belly and she won't sleep any other way.

Once they can roll over you can let the sleep how they want to. Most books and pediatricians actually say that wedges and positioners and crib bumpers actually increase sids risk, because it gives them something to suffocate on. Just put him to bed on his back, and if he rolls over it's ok.

All of my kids preferred to sleep on their bellies, and if I put them on their backs, they'd roll over. I haven't had a problem with any of them yet. Don't worry about it.

I read that if they are capable of rolling over on their own you should have no problems. He'll figure out how he's comfortable and sleep that way, just like us. He'll be just fine. Now try to stop worrying and get some good sleep yourself. :o)

My pediatrician told me to PUT my daughter to sleep on her back.... but if she rolls over, just leave her. Otherwise I will not get any sleep. Hope that helps.

I was told that if a child can roll from front to back and back to front that the chance of suffication is GREATLY reduced. My son could do the same at four months and as much as I tried I couldnt get him not to sleep on his tummy. My doctor said as long as he can roll bavk it was ok.



The problem with those wedges is if you dont put them in right a child can suffocate because of those things. I personally would not use them, large foam things near my infants head does not appeal to me.

if there rolling over on there own then they can turn there head to where they can get to air they need ... my son was 1 month and a 1/2 year at birth and when he started rolling over i was scared silly but then i just layed him on the patlet on the floor and watched him and when he rolled over he turned his head to the side then i flet better because i could see him ....

Dont keep anything in the crib with him, pilllows, blankets, stuff toys, now that he can roll dont panic. The main concern is fresh air so you could always have a gentle fan on that will circulate clean air around him.



The risk of SIDS drops a lot once they can roll. If you are completely terrified there are special mats that can be placed into the crib underneath him that if he stops moving or breathing it will sound an alarm, the only thing is im not sure if it will totally fit the whole crib so you may end up with a false alarm if he ends up rolling off the mat but it can help you relax knowing that if he stops breathing it will alert you.

I love it when you go in the morning to get your kids and they are on the opposite end of the bed. :) I almost had a heart attack the first time my daughter did it because she had her head at the bottom of the bed, but she had covered herself back up so I couldn't see her. Now I think it's cute, but not when I went in and couldn't find my daughter lol.
