My son is 8 months old and has been crawling for 2 months. for about the past month or so he has been pulling himself up and cruising (holding onto couch, table, etc.) Lately he has been under the impression that he can stand or walk independantly (which is not the case) so he will just let go.. i try to save him but sometimes it happens so fast theres nothing i can do. he gets bumps and bruises on his head to the point that i am honestly concerned. I dont know what to do. I cant carry him all day long but im scared of brain damage or something. is this normal? any advice?

My son was the same way. He is now 2 and some days I wonder if it is his first day walking again :) One day he is running without an issue and the next day it is like he has 2 left feet. His shins and forearms are so bruised up. Then his head is bruised because he is now tall enough where he can't walk under the counters and hits his head trying to get out from under a table or chair. If you make a big deal out of them falling or bumping themselves they will cry more. My son will now laugh and gets right back up and keeps going.

My advice is relax. My son had brain surgery at 7 weeks old and he is now 4 and he still falls over and bangs his head. He has bruises all over his legs cos he's wearing shorts from banging them or being kicked playing soccer etc. We always sy he bounces! The more you worry the more likely he is to react when he falls and you'll have a child that lifts the roof with his cries if he trips over.

What you do is discreetly observe him if he bumps his head. Is he unresponsive. Is he groggy or sleepy that's not usual. Is he vomiting? If that's the case then yes he needs to be checked. If not then a tube of arnica is your best friend. It's a natural part of growing up so relax and enjoy the process.

It'll take a little bit but he'll get the hang of it don't worry. He'll take his time but after so long he'll get tired of beating himself up then he'll just go one day, just try to relax and take it a step at a time.

Just take him in, ask the doctor to make sure there's nothing wrong. My daughter was the same way, it scared me to death but after awhile, I got use to it. Kids are going to hit their heads alot, but if you think there's something wrong, just take him in. No harm in just make sure he's okay.

my daughter was walking at 8 months and constantly had bruised legs and covered in cuts where she would fall over! i wouldnt worry too much but if you do, when he looks like he wants to go cruising put him in a walker, that way no falling over etc etc! or buy a bike helmet, they are cute and even if he wears it roung the house will make u worry less! xx

ok thanks ladies. hes my first and people sometimes make comments about bruises and lumps on his head which makes me super uncomfortable. One man actually implied that he is abused. so really after that comment i kind of started freaking out a little more. Im about to have #2 so at least i know what to expect the second time around.

Oh my, I can't count how many brusies and goose eggs my daughter had when she started doing this! Don't worry, babies are a lot more durable than we give them credit for! A few things, you may want to remove anything dangerous that he could fall on, decorative stuff on the floor or something, buy some corner covers for sharp corners on end tables, coffe tables, they make them for walls too. If you have hardwood floors, maybe think about a rug until he's got the hang of it. Besides that, he's going to fall, he's going to bump his head, get bruises and cry a lot. Totally normal!

Calm down all kids do this, it is how they learn to walk. You cannot keep your son in a bubble for the rest of his life. Bumps, bruises, broken bones, and cuts all happen even under the best of supervision its part of growing up. Just relax my son walked around with what seemed to be a perminent bruise in the middle of his forehead for the better part of a year because at first it was crawling into the table and chairs then it was falling into the table and chairs then it was just banging his head on the floor and walls for fun.
