check out the super nanny... she has a method called the controlled crying technique... it is a bit gentler than the ferber method... her books are wonderfull by the way!

What I've done with my daughter is staying with her either until she sleeps, and then slowly taking myself out of the room when she's half asleep half awake now. If she starts crying though we don't pick her up out of bed, we reassure her that we're still close by (either from inside or outside of the room, depending the situation). And same with during the night.

I find reassuring them and staying sometimes until they're sleeping helps. At first I did used to pick her up out of bed in the middle of the night, but slowly back off. And in the end, if she still woke up, all I had to do was give her her soother again and she would fall right back asleep.

Have you ever heard of the "Ferber" method? It's a type of 'crying it out' method that really worked for us. It was tough for a few nights, but it ended up paying off. That said, my daughter has been waking up again for the past week or so. But I think that's due to her teething and her reaching different milestones. I'm definitely more lenient when I know that something could be causing it, as opposed to us not being consistent. Good luck!
