My little girl is just about 6 months old and I am looking for a guide on starting to feed her baby food and all that jazz. We have been doing cereal for about a month and a half now, but am very unsure about what to do with all the other stuff! Help!!!!

Quoting Michelle:

I live in Canada, but my doctor told us that they now want people to start with meats, then veggies followed by fruits. The reason they say to start with meats is because to many babies are having issues with low iron. Just what I was told. We started our daughter with meats at 6 months and now at 11 months she is eating EVERYTHING we eat!! There's not much she won't eat:o) Good luck and enjoy this new messier stage:o)

I don't know about that I tried meat and my son HATED it so if ya do try that don't get to much of it at a time because your little one may not want to eat it, mine certainly didn't not until he was about 8 monthes or more anyway and by then he had teeth and ate little bites of real meat.

I say start slow with things that are kinda neutral flavors, like banana(but not to much it gave my little one the runs or it could work the other way too). And like they always say one thing every few days to a week make sure there are no allergies. Carefull of strawberry and Tomato I hear a lot of kids have trouble with those, mine does. my experience apples and pears may be a problem too, sometimes they upset little tummies and make for more spitting up.

You can start with any stage 1 food and infant cereal. I wondered Wal-mart and city market for ideas and options. I would only try one new food a week to see how your baby does with it and if there is any reaction to the new food. Kids usually love the sweeter food so I mixed the fruits with plain cereal once they have tried it. Only do what you are comfortable with. Just remember that when doing fruit and veggies some of them have side effects when it comes to them going potty i.e. banana's can constapate them.

babycenter.com! It's a website with great resources if you haven't checked it out. Just search the site for "solid food" and it should pull up a guide to if you child is ready, how to start, what to feed month by month.....hope this helps!
Oh, and onceamonthmom.com/baby-food/ is a great site for baby food recipes if you're looking to make your own!

There are lots of sites about what they should be eating and in what order. My doctor said to start fruits first, because even though people say they wont like their veggies, it really helps their digestive system to do the fruits first. They can have pooping problems otherwise. Also, I make my own baby food and I use this great book call..The Basic Babyfood Cookbook. Its only like $10 and it helps with how to make everything and advice on what they should eat and meal planning and everything. Just a thought.

My doctor said to start my son off with vegetables and then fruits (after starting the cereal). Make sure you only try one at a time and leave a three day span before trying something new, in case they have any allergies you will be able to pin point it.

Also, always try the new foods again maybe a few days later, even if your daughter doesn't like it the first time. She may not have been in the mood the first try.

Just make sure that when you give her a new food, make sure that is the ONLY new food you try for a few days. Because if you give her more than one new food at a time, and she ends up having an allergic reaction, you won't know which food she had the reaction to. You can always mix it up AFTER you know which foods you 100 % know she isn't allergic to.

I would start with the veggies first. I started my boy on bananas.. He loved them but is not so hot when it comes to the veggies. If you start with the veggies maybe she will be partial to them like Cole (my almost 8 month old) is to his fruits. Have fun with it.

meat should not be introduced until 7-8 months of age. I have 2 kids and my daughter is almost 5 months and i forget a lot of this stage adn i just read up yesterday actually and the guid was in the book saying when to start what. Its a great book. I would recommend you get it too:) What to expect the first year.

Start with veggies. If you start with fruit she will less likely want to eat veggies after. Start with carrotts, sweet potatoes, peas, then add in one or 2 fruit after she has been on these for a while. Add a bite or 2 after meal for a special treat kind of thing. Make sure when you introduce a new food you wait 3-5 days before introducing a new one to make sure there are no allergies. If she shows sings of allergy stop that food and wait a day or 2 before starting a new one.

Good luck!

I wouldn't give my kids gravy, especially at that age, it's nothing but grease and flour and you don't want to start them on bad habits. . .I also did the making my own baby food and putting in ice trays and once it was frozed I put it in storage bags so it wouldn't get the freezer burn on it. . . yeah there are lots of websites that will help you with portions and all that
here is another one:
http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/
and when you start her on a food, try it one day and then wait a day or two to see how she reacts (uspest stomach, any problems with bowl movements, rashes) and then try it again and then wait and then after about a week maybe a week and a half try a different food. . .
oh and when you feed her the orange type foods, be careful not to feed to much or at least mix it up with the other colors.. .I turned my baby orange lol she had an orange yellowish glow (and it wasn't jaundice) I took her to her check up and the doc asked if she liked her carrots and I said " oh yes, and squash, and sweet potatoes" and she said " I can tell" lol
and remember just because you may not like a certain food doesn't mean she wont
I had to remember that everytime I went shopping, I would always get the basic veggies and not realizing all the others he might (and did) enjoy, like avocado, it is so great for baby and I never thought to give it to him
oh also you don't really need a food processer unless you want or already have one,
I used a blender and it worked just as well
I know I wrote a lot lol and I have a whole lot more of ideas and recipes if you would like them. . you are more than welcome to message me for them =)
one more thing. . if she doesn't like it at first doesn't mean she will. .you should try a food at leat 15-20 times. . try it and if it doesn't go well, wait a week and try again, still if there is no luck try in a few mroe days etc. . .

oh honey if i would have waited that long for my lil boy he would have starved to death you are stronger than me! Just do what makes up comfortable start with the one foods and see wat she likes they dont like everything! but make sure you which out the veg. and the fruits or they will just want the fruit and you can mix them to make the veg. taste better! just try once a day until she gets hungrier and she will!! then work your way up! I'm not the smartest and i only have 1 but dont let ppl push you to do something your not comfy with and they love gravey!
