i really dont feel like plastics are a cause of diabetes..that would be poor diet and no exercise mixed in with genetic predispostions. though i do feel like we should be careful with plastics, people are living longer than ever so i think we are mostly ok. Autism is on the rise because its now a scale and people who were just "odd" before are now being diagnosed with being on the Autism spectrum...plus poor diet and crappy chemicals in the food. there are chemical in everything and as long as you take some precautions, most people will be ok. 99.9% of people are NOT going to "all of a sudden" have an allergy. they dont work like that.

Yes Katie, I have been diagnosed by a doctor. The way this particular issue is tested for is through bloodwork because 'skin testing' could be deadly to those of us extremely sensitive to latex/rubber/plastics.

Getting rid of all plastics does sound extreme. However, you could choose to do it slowly. For example don't buy any more plastics with "recycle symbols" on them. Dishes, toys, indoor-outdoor carpeting, etc. NEVER use plastic in the microwave and if you feel you need to drink from a plastic bottle, NEVER refill the bottles. Buy cotton or wool rather than polyester clothing and bedding. If you are concerned about not having flame-retardent chemicals on/in your beds, use a layer of wool under your mattress pad as wool is a natural flame retardent. If you choose to clean/wash carpet use white vinegar instead of commercial cleaners. I buy only white vinegar in glass bottles. I make my own clothes washing detergent and it is not only cheaper, it cleans better. I would like to point out that diabetes type II (normally found in 'older' people) and autism is on the rise in our children and research is pointing the finger at plastics.

Have you actually being officially diagnosed by a doctor about this sudden "allergy" to plastics? Getting rid of everything that could contain plastic seems a little extreme to me...

I understand Jodi. I also have yo be cautious because the Plastics Industry is "huge" and "powerful"! I feel that it is my responsibility to share what I have learned. The GOOD NEWS is that Los Angeles is banning plastic shopping bags by 2013 and Toronto (the largest city in Canada) is also banning plastic bags by 2013!

Thank you for sharing Wendy. My smoke and mirrors comment was because we get so used to people using similar language to solicit business here, you'd be amazed, so I was a little concerned. But sharing your story is totally worthwhile, so thank you.

No smoke and mirrors Jodi. A LOT of people simply don't want the inconvenience of getting rid of their precious plastics and I don't have the spare time to try to help those not interested. Since you responded I will tell you that any plastics with a "recycle code" on them are poisonous. The "recycle code" looks like a triangle with arrows rounding the corners and a number in the middle. CLEAR plastics are probably the worst because they also contain Phthalates. This includes such things as storage containers and baby bottles.

Until 3 months ago I was blissfully unaware of how plastics are absolutely everywhere! Then, in the middle of one night, I woke up trying to get a breath but I could not. I was suddenly VERY allergic to my memory foam mattress. I immediately got rid of the mattress but then found that I am also allergic to plastics. My allergies are NOT contact allergies, they are resperatory. Since those 3 months ago I have been researching and working frantically to find all the sources of plastic and protect myself and my grandchildren (I am raising 3 boys) from the plastic vapors. I promptly got rid of (in the trash) all laundry products, all bath products, all cleaning products, all throw rugs and indoor-outdoor rugs, all non-glass dishes, cups etc. These all have plastic in them. Some of the things I couldn't bear to just throw away I put in a metal garbage can with a lid to contain any vapors until I could get a grip on what I was or was not allergic to. These things included Rx bottles, make up, small plastic containers that were so handy and plastic bags from the grocery store. Ultimately I had to throw all of these things in the trash.

Some of the things/places I cannot avoid are: My car, a grocery store, a drugstore and a doctor's office. When I have to be near/in these places I wear a mask (don't buy a mask, they have plastic in them) made from 100% cotton and a 'good' carbon filter.

I know this task sound daunting but if it's done a little at a time it's not sooo bad. I make my laundry soap and store it in glass jars. I'm in the process of finding a recipe for body lotion that I like and it will NOT be stored in plastic!

There are good sites on FB and online about going green. Thanks for asking, Jodi:)

Well, if you're not selling anything and this isn't a solicitation, why the smoke and mirrors? Just come out with it here.
