My son is turning 12 months this friday and I was wondering if I should wean him off the formula little by little or cold turkey? He has been eating dairy products like yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese and hasn't had any problems so I was just going to use the rest of the formula that I have and then switch to cow's milk. Any ideas or advice?

Quoting Rebecca:

Thanks that is good advice. I have tried to give him a sippy cup before for water and juice and he never would take it. He has his water out of a cup with a straw but I think that maybe I should try the sippy again. Anymore ideas if he still doesn't take it?

Have you tried different sippy cups? My baby is also turning one very soon and I found she was really fussy with sippy cups... they is only one that she will drink really well out of. I am finding these responses very interesting also because i am in exactly the same situation. My little girl will have milk on her cereal and will eat dairy products etc but she just wont drink full cream milk. I think i am going to just have to go cold turkey on the formula and see how i go. Just go with the flow everything will turn out right he will drink milk eventually :)

My childrens pediatrician said at twelve months go to whole milk.  It actually feeds the childs brain and helps them grow.  The sooner you take him off the bottle the better. It will save his teeth in the long run. The Dr. also said when he gets thirsty he will drink from that sippy cup. He's testing you be strong. Hope this helps.

I would suggest weaning him gradually even though he is already having dairy products although my little boy is now 14 months and I still give him one bottle of formula as well as one beaker of cows milk as I find it works out cheaper!  Definitely worth trying to swap over to a beaker as well. My little one took to his milk in a beaker really well although I do spoil him and still give him a bottle at bedtime!!

i have 2 kids and did each one differently. My oldest didnt like cows milk so i had to do half formula and half milk for a while to get him used to it, however my daughter, took milk right away. If your little one doesnt take to cows milk right away you might want to wait a few weeks beofre you switch to the sippy that way he doesnt feel like everything in his world is changing, but if he likes it, go for it.

I would wean him little by little. With both of my kids I started with half a cup for a few days and so on. Even if he has been eating dairy you don't want to shock his little system. Also another thing I may suggest is to start the milk in a sippy cup not a bottle, I never put milk in a bottle with my kids, so by the time they were switched to milk from formula they were also of fthe bottle with no issue!
