I just found out today that I have an umbilical hernia, it is a lump slightly above my belly button and it is sensitive to touch. Doc said i would need a surgical consult but if I was planning to have more children I could wait to have the operation on it. Anyone have a similare experience?

I also have umbilical hernia, but it only shows when I am pregnant. I noticed it when I was pregnant with my third child, and it was the size of a marble. I was told, after I had my child, to lose weight and then surgery would be required, there was no mention of waiting to have anymore children. Anyway, before any post pregnancy weight was lost I found myself pregnant again, this time the marble sized lump became more golf ball sized, but I was told it was ok. I have just had baby number 5 and although the lump grew even more, I was told unless it was causing me severe pain they would just leave it. I do sometimes get pain/tenderness in the area but nothing that stops me going about my day to day business. I suppose every person is different, as is every hernia, it will also depend on your G.P. etc as to what they will do about it.

I had twins in Feb of 2001. Shortly after I delivered I realized I had this protrusion, so I consulted my doctor. He told me it was a hernia from the stress the twins had on my body. I consulted with a surgeon, and of course, it needs surgery to repair. I decided to wait because of money and so in January of 2006 I found out that I was pregnant again, and I delivered in September. I still have the hernia, and my personal opinion is that you should have it repaired before you have anymore children. What can happen is, as your belly gets larger so can the hernia. Mine became twice the size after my second pregnancy. Also, the pain can be excruciating. There are days that I can't get it to go back in, and my stomach looks aweful. I wish I had, had it repaired before my second child. I hope this helps your situation, and good luck.

i had surgery to have mine repaired in august 2007 and had my little girl in July 2009 with no problem.My doctor wanted to repair it before i planned to get pregnant as he said the pressure of baby on the hernia could make it much worse. not sure if that helps but i hope i does a little. all the best :)

well, this isn't exactly like what your going thru but.... i was born with a umbilical hernia. i'm okay but my belly button is a little funny. i was fine with my two pregnacys but i also had years to heal. when do you plan to have children? what is the healing time? does it mean you'll never have more kids if you have the surgery or will you just have to wait a while?
doctors are usually pretty vague on what you need info on. at least in my experience. maybe talk to a specialist in that kind of sugery and make a list of every question you need to know and ask them.
i would think if its sensitive already i wouldn't want to imajine the sort of sensitivity it would have when your pregnant.
