My daughter is 9 months old and we recently starting using signs for certain words. Our basics so far are eat, cat, chicken (from grandpa's farm) thank you and beautiful. Has anyone else used signs? I could use suggestion for simple everyday things to use with signs and simple motions to go with them. Also, how long before they start to pick up on the signs, either understanding them or using them? Thanks for all your help!!!

We do Milk, More, and All Done. My daughter is 7 months and she has not done milk yet to tell me she wants a botlle but while she is drinking she will sign "milk" it's so cute! Oh and she has not done more or all done on her own but I'm sure in a couple months she will have it down.

I use signs with my kids starting about that age, and the first ones were pertinent to our daily activities, needs, and wants. For instance "more," "eat," and "please," were our first ones. It took several weeks of us doing the signs every time we said the words for the kids to start doing them too. Think about what age your child starts reaching for something she wants (that's a sign too!), and you will know when she is actually capable of learning and using other signs. They won't be perfect at first, but enough to get the idea. For instance, until my son was 2, his version of please (supposed to be open palm rubbing in circles on the chest) was to rub both of his palms on his belly. Be sure to praise your daughter's use of signs with big smiles and excited congratulations! Babies are smart, and as long as you're consistent (and don't try to learn too many at once), you'll see results in no time at all!
On a different note, it's important that you still speak the words you are signing even after she knows what they mean (unless your mouth is full and you're trying to get a point across), so that learning signs doesn't become an impediment on her speech development.
Good luck! It will be fun watching her learn and use signs in her everyday life! And very useful, too, especially for situations when your mouth is full and you're trying to get a point across!

If you start them early (I think the suggested age to start is 6 months, but you can do it earlier) they should start to sign back between 9-12 months. Since you just started she will probably sign back around a year. Here's a link with more signs.
