Ok so my son is 16 months old and It is a disaster trying to wash his hair. I use a cup and i try to get him to hold back his head, so that im not pouring water over his head, but he always fights me and I end up getting water in his face . then he looses his breath for a second and then starts screaming, because he is terrified. I have also tried laying him down on his back and putting his hair in the water, but that doesnt work either. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know that he is not gonna drown with a little bit of water in his face, but i dont want him to be terrified and i dont want to have to fight with him to wash his hair. any advice would be appreacited. thanks!

My son is 4 and I had the most difficult time getting him comfortable with rinsing his hair. I tried all sorts of ideas, but the one that worked for me was a washcloth. I would wet it (not soaking wet, just enough to squeeze a little water out) and run my hand away from his face. Took a little extra time, but evenutally he let me put the washcloth over his eyes while I used a small cup with just a little water at a time. Baby steps! Good Luck!

My daughter does the same thing. She started doing it right around a year old and she's 27 months now and still screams blood murder when we wash her hair. I just try to make a game out of it and make up something to look at on the ceiling. I've also found that only filling the cup about half way seems to not freak her out as much, but then I have to rinse her hair like 4 or 5 times (but you have a boy with less hair so you may have better success). She also does a little less screaming if I take her in the shower with me and wash her hair under the shower head. They do make these little bath cups for that, but my friend said they didn't work for her kids so I've never tried.

I was having the same problem with my daughter and ended up changing out the shower head to a movable one. She tilts her head back and I can rinse her hair with the shower head and minimal water in the face. Shower head was relatively cheap like $30 at Walmart. She now loves bath time with no fuss.

kinda funny you ask this...i was at walmart today and saw this nifty cup/pitcher with a rubberized side. it fits against the kid's head so that the water doesnt get in his face! heres a link to babies r us, so you can see what i'm talking about

My 15 month old wiggles and moves when it's time to wash his hair also and we have similar difficulties.

We tried the jug that Kristen mentioned with the rubber part on it, which helps a little. Sometimes he moves too much to get it in place though, and he still gets water in his face. When it works right though, the water goes down the side of his face by his ears. I'm going to try the visor thing with the jug!

My brother hated water on his face as a toddler. Mum had one of the foam visor type things that goes around the head so that the water runs off the visor & not down the face. I have seen them recently in pharmacies, Target & Kmart. I have also seen in Target & Kmart in the babies department a special jug with a soft rubber part at the top which you hold against the hair line & get your child to tip their head back & the water doesn't get on their face. I hope these suggestions work for you.

With my daughter when she was younger I would lay her down on the kitchen counter with her head hanging over the sink and use the sprayer. With my son I would always get him to look up and the I would use the cup to pour water over his head.
