I havent started potty training yet. But i spoke to a few friends with kids and some midwives, and they all agree that boys are different to train than girls. Also, usually between 18-20months is when you would start training. Let them tell you when they are ready. It'll make it a lot easier.

Great question! You're in for an adventure, as boys are normally harder to potty train than girls. You'll pick up on little signs here and there though that will show you he's ready. Waking up with dry diapers is always a big sign, that shows they have at least some control over their bladder (even if they dont realize it themselves).
We started by taking our son to the toilet RIGHT after he woke up in the morning. We started that at age 2, but some have started younger/older with much success. Keep in mind each child is different and will progress at his/her own pace. :) Good luck!
