What is a good age for a toddler bed?

My 20 month old has been in a toddler bed for about a month now. I have been having a lot of people tell me that he is just to young to be out of the crib. We took him out of the crib when we found him with one leg over the side of the crib. Do you think we are wrong?? What age or time do you think is a good age?

My boyfriend's son is 19 months old and he's been sleeping in a toddler bed for about a month now. He does really well in it. I think if they're ready, they're ready. I'm sure everyone has a different opinion on when a good time is but I'm sure your intuition is right.

I think as long as they can crawl in and out of the bed and actually stay in it during the night i don't see a problem with it.
Plus, why would you keep them in the crib when they try to climb out and might fall and hurt themselves really bad? Both of my kids were around 13-15 months old when their cribs got turned into a toddler bed and it worked out great. They loved the independence and everyone was happy.

I put my daughter in a toddler bed a about 18 months. She was getting her thigh stuck between the bars and we had to break the crib to get it out. She was very smart like your son and trying to climb out of it. I think what you're doing is great. they can't be babies forever

We put our son in a baby bed at 18 months. He wasn't climbing out, he was quite happy in there but we needed it for his new little brother. We like the bed as he has mre freedom, but we are finding that he likes to get out and sleep at the door so he doesn't miss anything. It takes a ot of time and patience, but I find the bed safer. My cousin's little one was crawling out and they switched her to a toddler bed as well as they were orried she would hurt herself.

We did put a safety latch on the door knob as he learned how to turn the knob. We have a gate at the top of the stairs also just in case.

I dont believe that there should be an age limit per say. Every child advances with things on different levels! If your child can walk & run around fine and is climbing over things, like his crib, then it is definitely time for a toddler bed! You did the right thing! Trust your instincts, know one knows your child better than you do! Just take extra precautions as far as baby gates and locks on doors so that if your child does get up while your not around, he will be safe! Good luck momma! :)

its pretty much depends on when u want to put him in a toddler bed, your the parent dont worry about what other people tel you is wrong like that, you know your child. i have a cousin that is 4 now and she was climbing out of her crib about the same time, and after that she was in a toddler bed..so it depends on when u think its right

I know they say around 18 months you can start trying the toddler bed. I really don't think there is a right or wrong age (well of course babies should be in a crib). If your little one is sleeping fine in the bed, then I wouldn't worry about what other people say. Every child is different. For instance, my son is going to be 2 in 2 days and he is still in a crib. He's just not ready for a toddler bed yet. So if it works for you, then keep up the good work mama!

My kids were alot younger. The 1st one didn't have much of a choice, we needed the crib for the next one, so I think he was around a year, we wanted to transition him well before the next one which was 4 months later. With our 2nd one I think he was younger than 20 months, just because the older one was in one already. But we have toddler beds that were handmade, so they have a rail on two sides and then we put them in a corner and they are only maybe 2 feet off the floor. With my third, he is 10 months and we are trying to transition him now, since we have one coming at the end of June. One great thing is that he wasn't sleeping through the night, and now it's been a little over a week and he has been pretty much sleeping through the night, and it has been great!! I think that it doesn't matter what age your child is, as long as your ready and that they are comfortable, trust your instinct, although it is nice to get advice too.

we put our son into a toddler bed when he started climbing out of the crib. you did the right thing. falling out of the crib could cause some serious damage. next time someone tells you that you're wrong and that he's too young... just say, "hey! he's my kid, not yours, and i know what's better for him! there's a reason we made the swich and that's all you need to worry about." ;)

That's around the same age I did my 3 older kids. I think it is appropriate, especially when climbing begins. The importance of using the toddler bed, in my opinion, is teaching the child to stay in it. We used a playpen for when they got out of the toddler bed. It only took a couple times and they got the hang of it.

it all depends on your child is she or he is ready for a big girl / boy bed....my daughter had it at 20 months and she loved it....but it was up to her though at first i had her big girl bed in her room with her crib and i let her chose...i think she enjoyed beying able to pick all by her self :)

I put my daughter in a toddler bed at 10 months old as soon as she could get off and on it by herself. It's so low to the ground so you don't have to worry about safety. She hated the crib!

I did the same thing, People told me my son was to young, but if they are crawling over the side , they could fall out and get hurt, that was my main concern. he was about the same age .

As soon as your little tike can climb up and down couches on his own then it's time for the toddler bed.

It all depends on the child...like most things. Some children need to be in a crib longer than others. Just do what you think is best for your child. If you are afraid of them falling out of the toddler bed and getting hurt, maybe see if your mattress on your crib goes down any more and try the crib again, if not I wouldnt worry about it if they are doing fine in the toddler bed.

OMG no! Dont listen to those people! It depends on the child. My son is 15 months and has been in a toddler bed since 13 months! He was just ready. Some people are saying that about my son getting introduced potty training. He comes to me and tells me Caca and trys to pull the diaper off so what else do you but introduce. There is nothing wrong with him in toddler bed. Plus obviously hes fine hes been in it for a month!

I do not think he is too young! Boys are a lot different than girls! My son did the same thing... I put him down for nap one day and the next thing I know, he is knocking on the door for me to let him out!! He crawled out of his crib!!! That very night my husband put his toddler bed up and he has been sleeping in it since. We did have a few issues in the beginning with him not staying in bed but we continued to put him back in the bed everytime he would get out. This took about three days of continously putting him back in the bed. Now he goes to bed and goes right to sleep without getting up at all.

Wrong? Not at all. If you were wrong then we must be horrible parents because we gave our son his toddler bed on his 1st birthday and he's been using it ever since. He is our 1st child so we didn't have experience with when things "should" happen. We just figured he's one so he's old enough for a real bed, no more bottles & no more pacifiers. He didn't have any problems adjusting so I figured we did it well.

I put my twins in there own toddler beds when they turned 2. My doc told me that after they turn a year old you can put them in their own beds but we had a hard time seprating them so we waited until they were 2 and they sleep good by themselves.

A week after my son turned a yr a old, we put him in his car toddler bed and he did great. He is 13 1/2 months now and still loves it. He sleeps in it all night. Yes he can get in and out on his own but at sleep time he knows he is suppose to stay in it. And we were told by everyone that he was too young but we did it anyways and I dont have any regret. If he loves it and sleeps there why make him go back to a baby bed? The toddler beds have either the rails or the thick sides(depending which you have )so they cant fall off so I think you little boy would be just fine.

I think he will be just fine. As long as he is not having any problems with the transfer, go for it! My daughter was out of her crib between 12 & 14 months. She was climbing over the side of the crib as well and shortly after her 2nd birthday she had "upgraded" to a twin bed. Only you know when your child is ready. =)

My son was moved into a toddler bed right before he turned 18 months. We have another one due in March so he had no choice and we had NO issues. Completely up to each parent but it has been the best thing for us!

We put our son in a toddler bed at 18mths old as he was constantly waking up in his cot and crying, he really didnt like it in there and was like that from birth, as soon as we tried him in a bed he has been a lot more settled and stays there throughout the night without a flicker. He is 3yrs old now.

I put my son in a bed at 15 months, he too was doing the monkey on the crib... my daughter on the other hand asked for it around 22 months, so I would say, your the expert on that one, cause every kids are ready at a different age. If you feel your kid is ready, then he probably was. especially with all that climbing :)

My son is 14 months and he already has a toddler bed. Its the best thing you can due. I asked His doctor and she said toddlers can start using a toddler bed once they have learned how to walk alone. She tells me that keeping them in a crib doesn't help them at all they walk slower they cry more, in a toddler bed they feel they can due anything they have more space and they start to understand that they are getting big and that we expect more from them. That is the study that she showed me. Its been doing great for my son he listens more he stays in his room more and plays and watches cartoons all alone with out no one having to be their and we only got him the toddle bed a week ago. Also he doesn't even fall off it he has been doing great. I don't think it's a bad a idea I think it is a great idea.

I did not put my son into a toddler bed until he was able to climb out of his crib which was reall y early, like 12 months. So any age is fine. You just want to make sure he/she isnt able to wonder the house! lol

My son is just over a year and he'll be switching to a toddler bed in about a month because he's so tall. He can just about lean over the side of the crib and fall out. You've got to do what's the safest for your child. My mom (who raised five kids) just told me when they start trying to escape put them in their own bed instead of a crib. What you did was just fine.

We put our Daughter in a regular twin size bed when she was 2 and our Son in one when he was 16 months. Every child is different. If he was about to climb out of his crib I would think he was ready for a toddler bed. I would of done the same thing, don't listen to to much of what everyone else has to say, follow your insinct, it's usualy right. Good luck.

I put my daughter in one at about 14 months when she learned to crawl out of her crib and fall on to the ground. I think that if his room is child proof then he should be fine. I would rather risk him playing with toys while he's supposed to be asleep than risk him breaking his neck because he jumps out of crib. You do what you think is right for your child. But I personally think you are doing a fine job.

When you child start climbing out or attempts to climb out its time for a toddler bed. its not just cause the childs age its for his/her safety as well.

i don't really think there is an actual age for a toddler bed they will show you on their own when they are ready for a big bed.i knew my child was when she climbed out of the crib and came into the front room to visit me for something to eat so to be honest every child is different so i hope that helps.

lol if he had 1 leg over the side of his crib you were wright. it's less of a fall from over the rails than vs. a toddler bed... My son has been in a full size bed since he was about 11 months old. he's very tall and a bed hog... he had a toddler bed from 8-11 months... hope this helps! :)
