What medical intervention did you receive during labour?

As this is the age where our bodies should be doing the best to give birth I am very curious about what kind of medical interventions other received while labouring. Induction? waters broken by Dr.? forceps or vaccuum? c-section (scheduled or emergency)? pain medication (morphine, epidural)? or if you did it naturally what was your method? And if you want to tell the reasons behind it great! Thanks everyone this has been on my mind for months!

i was 16 when i had my first baby. my contractions were irregular from 9am when i woke up that morning until i gave birth at 11pm that night. i wasn't told to go to the hospital till around 9pm b/c the doctors didn't believe i was in real labor b/c my contractions were so irregularly spaced even though they were growing more intense. i had a completely natural birth b/c when i got into the hospital at 10 pm i was already 9cm dilated and there was no time for any medical intervention.they also had to break my water when i got into the hospital b/c it never broke on its own. to get through the pain and contractions i just held/aqueezed my boyfriends hand and breathed through them; i just kept telling myself that it was going to get worse. well in the end she was a 7lb 2oz baby and although the pain was bad it just never got as worse as i had set me self up for. I am now due in may to have our second baby and i am planning on another medication free child birth as long as everything goes well and healthy. my advise for any women preparing for labor is keep in mind that women have been doing this forever and just set your self up for the worst; if it gets that bad then you were prepared, if it doesn't get that bad then it wont seem so painful. the pain is long but only temporary.

I went into labour naturally, but had my waters broken by the doctor when my blood pressure started to rise and my babies heart beat fluctuated. I didn't receive any pain medication and my little man was born naturally. Turns out he had had a meconium poop while inside so after he came out the doctors had to suction his lungs. He was fine and so was I. I still maintain that labour was beautiful and not as bad as I thought it would be. (shrug)

I was induced with pitocen 2 weeks early,my doctor had to break my water (no epidural, thank you!) that was painful, needless to say. I received an epidural and 1 hour after they broke my water I started pushing, and had my baby. she was 8 lbs 0.5 oz and had shoulder distortia and respiratory trouble. thank god for an epidural because I had a 3 degree laceration episomity to get her out!! I don't regret at all about getting the epi because it saved me from alot of pain. =)

My waters had to be broken for me when I was in labour with Amy. She was back-to-back so I ended up having an assisted delivery and, after trying all sorts of pain relief, had to have the epidural. Amy started getting distressed whilst I was pushing so I had an episiotomy and she was delivered by ventouse (vaccuum).

I was induced and my water was broke. I wanted my husband to be there, i couldn't picture him not being there with me for that. I also had an epidural, they said it would be best since i was induced and i had a single artery umbillical cord. But it was all goo in the end, but my body still hasn't fully recovered.

let's see, my water broke around 8pm on June 9th and went to the hospital. There was meconium in the fluid so thwy had to monitor my son the entire time which meant that I was stuck in bed unless I had to use the bathroom. They gave me pitonin (or whatever it's called) to stimulate contractions. Once those started and i couldn't walk around to help the pain I got nuvane (or however it's spelled). once that wore off I was dialated enough to get an epidural. Oh and sometime before that they had to break my water some more because one of the bags didn't break. Around 4pm I was fully dialated and started pushing. I couldn't get him out on my own after 3 1/2 hours of pushing so they tried using a vacumme and episiotomy. When that didn't work I was wheeled in for an emergency c-section

I was put in the hospital at 31 weeks, 4 days because of high blood pressure (we're talking stroke/seizure range levels) for monitoring. I was given 2 different types of blood pressure medications, plus pain medication to help manage the migraines my BP was giving me.

At 32 weeks, 5 days, the doctors decided that I needed to have my daughter for both of our safety and a c-section was going to be the safest method of delivery. I was given a spinal, but since they screwed that up, once they had taken her, the anesthesiologist pushed 2 doses of morphine.

I had planned a natural birth with no drugs of any kind, but that's not obviously how it turned out. I don't regret allowing them to take her when they did though, because I have a beautiful, healthy, baby girl who's growing and thriving. I did spend a lot of time while she was in the NICU asking the what-if's though.

I hope that no one has to go through what I did, as it is a terrible mental battle when it happens.

All week I had been having back labor. Very intense. On a wednesday I lost the mucus plug. Next day, Thursday around 10am I started having contractions. All throughout the day the increasingly got worse. Midwife checked periodically, and I was only at 1cm! Frustrating. All that night, I was laboring. No medical intervention. I took warm baths. Very nice. I went into the birth center Friday morning around 7am and I was finally at 4cm. After being checked in I labored in a bath tub. 11am she broke my water, and after 29hrs of labor (all natural) and 5min of pushing, my baby girl arrived at 3:44pm :)

All three of my children were induced with pitocin. The last one especially due to having problems with the first 2. My first baby(girl) was *8lbs 13 oz but I pushed for 3 1/2 hours before recieving an episiotomy. The only thing given to me was a pericervical block. My second child I was induced a week early hoping for an easier time....well he was 9lbs 6 oz and delivered faster but he had shoulder displatia? broke is collar bone on the way out ( was stuck and cord was wrapped around his neck) received another episotomy to get him out....ahhhh.and again only had a peracervical block. My third we knew we were having a boy so we planned on inducing early in hopes it would go smoother....it did. I had him 11 days early. This time around I had nothing but the pitocin to get me started and he was 8lbs 10 oz. Yeah it hurt like hell BUT I never even took a asprin and I was out of the hospital the next day. Everyone is different and do what you feel is best for you. I always expected I would do all the drugs (epidural) but im glad I didnt. Our bodies are made for childbearing.

Please no hate mail,

I had both of mine naturally with nothing at all. during or after

I had what they call silent labour with both my kids (im a very lucky girl) in total it took +/- 20 mins per kid,

I was in and out of hospital within 24 hours with both.

I put it down to the insane amount of chilly consumed during my pregnancy's it was the only think i craved and put the hottest i could get my hands on on everything.

Both my toddlers now love anything hot and spicy and just wont eat bland ...

I have birthed 5 wonderful children. 1st baby induced in a hospital when I was 9 days over due date somewhat against my will. Used pitocin for induction (never again), water broken artificially and no pain meds. Crazy painful. She weighed 9 lbs 13 oz. Had a home waterbirth for the 2nd with no interventions, she weighed 9 lbs. 5 oz. The 3rd and 4th (twins) were also at home, no interventions, one in the water, one born breech "on land". 7 lbs 11 oz and 6 lbs 2 oz. 2nd twin (breech babe) heart rate dropped very low 20 minutes after the birth of first because she was laying on her cord. Midwives were able to manage this very calmly by getting me out of the water, into different positions and using their hands to lift and unwrap the cord from her shoulders and neck as she was being born. 5th at home in water, no interventions, 9 lbs 6 oz. ALL "overdue" by 9-14 days. Natural birth IS possible for MOST women given the chance to work on it's own without people trying to speed it up and then managing it to death. The C-section rate in our country is dangerously high and incredibly unhealthy for the mama's and babies of the future. Interventions should remain in their rightful place of being life saving and NOT used the way they currently are. They C-section rate should be below 12% according to the World Heath Organization - ours is hovering at over 30%, much of this is due to induction. Leave the babies alone!!!! They will come when they are ripe and ready! :)

my labour was natural, got contractions by 8mins, got to hospital, water broke down n after 6hrs my daughter was born...no pain relief or anythin else, the doc just had to open me lil bit cuz my daughter had the umbilical cord round her neck so she needed more space to come out... feelin blessed that i could deliver naturally n the nurse n the doc were just observin n makin sure me n my baby r ok... i could say i laboured just with the help of my mom, the doc were active just in the final stretch of pushing when he saw its takin too long, so he checked the head, felt the umbl. cord, opened me bit n voila my daughter was born :-)

Slow laboured for about 6-7days then went in to birth centre on 14th Oct at 2.00am got measured and was 2cm along they decided not to send me home because I was too tired and in too much pain. I tried to sleep till about 7 but it wasn't happening, had a bath & then decided it was too much. Asked to go to Labour ward because I just felt like I was going to die! Lol, had an epidural, felt miles better and could finally get the rest I needed to birth my baby. By 12pm I was a full 10cm so they decided we could start pushing at 1pm. Started pushing and they realised that he was quite a big baby and that he didn't really enjoy the pushing so they intervined with forceps and an epsitomy. Gota be honest I didn't really notice anything I was too focused on getting him out and when he was born I was too busy looking and admiring him than recognising the DR giving me stiches! Lol xx

Hi so my story in short ( shortest i can manage anyway)

I went 2 weeks over with my son, i had a membrane sweep at 41 weeks that did nothing but hurt!! Then at 42 weeks went in for induction, i had the gel apllied twice , nothing,,, i was getting contractions but not dilating. Then after 24 hours , the midwife attempted to break my waters after the second try and a lot of pain, she brought in another midwife that informed her my waters had already gone , apparantly baby s head was was causin a plug so my water had been trickling out over a long period of time. After another 24hrs of this i gave in and had an epidural, after another 5-6 hours i was rushed for c section( as baby heartbeat was slowing) but ended up have a ventouse delivery. When he came out you could tell why , the cord was wrapped around his neck and right arm so he kinda came out hand first, giving a lil wave!! lol

I would never be induced again!!!

I have got 3 kids 2 boys n a girl. My eldest sons birth was ok, i had an epidural then had the midwife beside me giving me instructions when too push as couldn't feel anything. The birth went fine but delivering the placenta not soo well as it didn't come away from the wall as it's meant too so i had too go to theatre and have it properly removed which wasn't very pleasant at all. With my daughters birth i had false labour with her for a week so eventually when it really was time i ignored it and before i knew it i was actually 8cm dialated when i felt the pain was too intense to handle n rang the ambo to go to hospital, She was born 10mins after they dropped me off.She was a good birth though and all natural no pain relief nothing. As for my 2nd son i had a long labour with him was given an epidural as requested but they over did it n i couldn't feel anything in the end not even the contractions. I fell asleep n was wokin by a nurse to push as his head was crowning. My waters came out with a contraction in 1 piece then the next contraction was my son then the next was the placenta but his was birth was the best although after his birth i developed post natal depression a couple days later n had too get my partners mum too come look after him as i couldn't handle being around him but after having her help for a week i was soon back too my old self and was fine after that. All my kids are growing well now and to fast lol.

Wish I had stuck to my plan on giving natural birth, but it hard when you are in that much pain and the nurse is rubbing the ephidural in your face every two mintues (are sure you don't want it? you're in a lot of pain and it's only gonna get worse!) I received no medication however my water would not break even when i had the urge to push, so the nurses had to break it a few minutes before my son was born. It was kind of cool because the nurses really did not think i could do it, im 20 years old and my son was 10lbs 5oz when he came out, but he was so alert, it was great.

I had to have an emergency c-sec. My contractions was pushing her head over my pelvis, and I had only dilated 1cm in over 15hrs, her head had not descended properly into my pelvis to offer support with the labor. An epidural was given to me, which was a very thick needle, you can see down the hole of the needle! But its fine, coz you don't feel a thing, they give you a first injection - to num the pain of the the epidural needle, and its that needle that sends a sharp pain up and down your spine. In any C-sec they use forceps to pull the head out, and no worries, it shouldn't hurt the baby. There's not as much pressure applied to the head with the forceps in a c-sec apposed to when the try pull the head out with a natural birth.

After a slip and fall I started labour two weeks before my due date. However I was not dialating. After two weeks of non-stop contractions (3 minutes apart) and the doctor insisting that tonight was the night, every night, he induced me. He gave me an iv of oxytocin at 10am. He broke my water by 2pm. I was offered (and accepted) an epidural by dinner. My daugher was born just after 9pm. The lactation consultant was in by 10pm. And I was walking around by midnight.

I am glad I had the epidural. The doctor made a lot of sense when he said, why go through all the pain when there are safe methods to help? He said he never understood the female version of a pissing contest when you need your focus and determination on delivery. He said that it often ends up that women who don't take the drugs end up pushing too soon and end up pushing longer and tire out sooner because of it. And then because they are too tired, end up not being receptive to the lactation nurse. Because I was able to relax and let my contractions do the work, I was only pushing for less than ten minutes. I have no regrets :)

My son decided to come into this world 8 days late. On day 7 of being late they did a ultrasound, and apparently my water had been leaking for awhile. They think thight might have occurred while going to the restroom a little each time. With my fluid level low, they decided to induce me that day with patocin (sp?). I had a mid wife the whole time which was wonderful. I had a water bith plan, I wanted everything natural. I stayed in labor with my son for 22 hours. I took no meds at all expect for the patocin to start my contractions. I walked, my spouse rubbed my back and legs, we listened to music, and I got into warm water from time to time. We also had lots of meaningful conversation with one another, which was perfect. In the 22nd hour, my son's heart rate sky rocketed to 220's and they rushed us into the OR, for an emergency c-section. My midwife stood back at that point and took lots of pictures for us. So we do have pictures of him coming out of my belly, being wiped off, etc. Plus daddy still got to cut his unbilical cord, like I had in my orginial birth plan. I still would go the natural route all over again. Also, we did not allow any family/ friends there intill after my son was born. We wanted the labor and delivery to be as peaceful as possible. The two of us created our son, so we wanted the two of us to be there when he came into the world.I did however have one great friend who worked at the hospital, and who was working at the time who did come to check on me though out the night.

My first pregnancy was a singleton and I tried so hard to have her completely natural but got SO scared that I wasn't going to be able to push her out because I became so exhausted that I got the epidural. Good thing too! I had been stuck at 3 for about 7 or 8 hours and as soon as I got the epidural she was out in less than an hour! I think it was enough to let me relax, but it did NOT take all the pain away, just to let ya know!

My second pregnancy we had twins and Twin A (our boy) was breech so I HAD to have a c-section and it was scheduled. My personal opinion is DEFINTIELY natural over c-seciton!!! You have about a week of recovery pain with a vaginal delivery, but with a c-section the recovery period is MUCH longer! You can't even drive for 2-3 weeks afterwards, and I have had two (my third pregnancy was triplets and I ended up having an emergency c-section) and my stomach STILL hurts sometimes! Plus you lose feeling in your belly and are at a MUCH higher risk for post-pardum depression. As for pain medication during the c-sections, both were spinal blocks, I believe. It's just like an epidural escept it does not last as long.

Hope this info was helpul to you and good luck with everything! Let us all know how it goes and God bless! : )

My water broke on it's own around 5am. I had a natural childbirth. The only added thing was pitocin to make sure the contractions didn't stop. I had been reading up and practicing the Bradley Method but once in labor all i had read and learned flew out the window! I just did what i had to do to be as comfortable as possible.

I never regretted having natural childbirth and i will do my best to do it again with any future child. I went in with the mindset that's what i wanted to do but also i understood situations change and i was open to whatever my labor brought.

I suggest doing some research and talking to your doctor to help answer your questions and no matter what don't let anyone talk you into doing something you don't want to do (unless it threatens your life or your babies). good luck and follow your heart!

With my daughter i was induced cuz i had preclamsia so the dr. broke my water...i later had a epidural,,,never felt it being put in i just remember my leg got numb... which did not work for my contractions...the plus of it was when i got my legs up i felt nothing...not even the contractions they had to tell me when to push...strange huh...

with my son i was leaking so i went to the hospital my dr. never really came out and told me if my water broke i wasnt haven't contractions all he said was lets get her on some pitocin....well about being dilated to a 5 for about 2 to 3 hours he decides to break my water....then to another epidural which i seriously REGRET! It took a hour to get it in i was in more pain from the trying to get it in then i was from my contractions...i was dilating so slowly...i was in pain the whole time i was in labor the epidural didnt even touch me! When i was dilated to a 7 my dr. stopped my pitocin cuz he had a emergency c-section to do on another women...so i completely stopped contracting...which was weird i got about 20 minutes of sleep and the nurse came in to the the pitocin back up and then here came the pain again just all at once...i was dilated to a 8 and my dad was coming up to see me as soon as he walked in the door i was yelling i had to push i had my mother in law telling me i was hallucinating cuz i shouldn't be hurting cuz i had a epidural...well guess what it dont work for everyone! my husband and mother in law was standing there tell me not to push when i couldn't help it when its time its time....while they were standing there telling me not to...not going to get the nurse or dr. i yelled at my dad who was going out the door cuz he dont like to see his daughter in pain to get the nurse. Well i wasnt going crazy cuz when the nurse finally which seemed like forever came in i was a 10...let just say...i should have never got the epi. cuz i pretty much had naturally child birth anyways cuz i felt everything!!! BUT IT WAS WORTH IT AND I WOULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!

I used demoral. The only problem I had incurred was you shouldn't have your child within so many hours of being administered it and my daughter was born only 3.5 hours later and she had a retracting chest. they took her to the nursery and gave her a little bit of oxygen and within 3 minutes they were back saying she was fine. But I only had the demoral, worked great, actually it put me to sleep between contractions. I slept so well when she woke me up to tell me it was time to get ready i asked if i had to and if i could sleep some more :-D

With my eldest, i was induced at just over 39 weeks, it was horrible, i was in labour for 2 days and the midwife broke my waters on the last day finally. i only had a shot of pethadine with her, but it was the worst experience of my life, nothing was natural about it, the hospital staff were cruel, however with my 2nd, i had a 100% natural birth, no drugs, in the water at a birth centre, with NO doctors, only the same midwife i had with my first. the labour lasted about 12 hours, only 4 of which was established, i had a wonderful experience, the water was wonderful, helped more than the pethadine did with the first. I am a total advocate for waterbirths now. i support intervention if absolutely necessary , and doctors are there for that, but i believe you should listyen to your body, it's built for this. GOOD LUCK

I was scheduled to be induced on a Friday, but the hospital didn't have any beds available when I called in on Thursday night. I wasn't able to get in until Saturday afternoon. Had cervidil Saturday night, Pitocin on Sunday with no progression. I couldn't feel contractions at all. So we did the cervidil again Sunday night and Pitocin on Monday at a stonger dose. All the while still at maybe 1 cm. It took 3 doctors to try and break my water. After progressing to only 3 cm, we decided to get baby out by c-section Monday night. I didn't want to go through a third day of pitocin. I didn't want any drugs during labor, but it didn't happen that way. I am thankful for a healthy baby boy.

I was induced 3 times! Cervidil didn't work the first time, went in the next morning and had it re-inserted. Started to work that night, by morning I was 5cm, got a walking epidural and a pitocin drip. By 1pm I was dialated then dr. told me to let my body do most of the work, started pushing at 2:45, ds was born at 3:20 with the help of a vacuum. His hand was right next to his head, so I couldn't push him out on my own.

I had a longish start of labour, and wasn't progressing very fast. I was having a hard time dealing with the pain so I had a the gas, which was ok, more just gave me something to focus on. Then I had a very small amount of morphine and a short time later my water broke. Then it was time to push and I had my daughter a little while later. Although I was hoping not to use any medial intervention, I believe having that tiniest amount of morphine helped to get things to the next stage. Of course every Mom wants the best situation for her baby but we also have to make sure that we can get to the next step. I didn't want to be too tired to push and the gas and morphine helped with that. The hospital was so good at offering non-medical pain relief before discussion other options. I did try a bath in the begining but that only helped for a little while. The one thing I am so glad about is that I could feel my daughter coming out, that was the most amazing experience. The pain wasn't even that bad. And what a joy to have a beautiful daughter as a result!

I had my membranes swept at 38 weeks 3 days, because I had been three cm dilated for three weeks. My water broke at 1:00 on Tuesday morning, went to the hospital and was sent home. Contractions started at 3:00, went to the hospital again and was given a shot of morphine (morphine doesn't help!) Back to the hospital at 8:00, Otto was trying to make his way out as I walked across the parking lot. I had gone from 3cm to 10cm in 5 hours. Nurse checked me and touched the babies head. They rushed me to a room, no time for any pain meds and the morphine had worn off. No time to check the babies position either, so they didn't realize that he was posterior until his head was out to his eyes and he was staring at his dad. It took 2 hours of pushing to get past his head. Dr had the tools for an episiotomy in her hand because Ottos heart rate was way down. She said I had one more push to get him out or they would have to start cutting :( Needless to say, he came out on the next push. I am so happy to have done it more or less drug free...But I had a pretty short labour, Had I been doing the back labour thing for a few more hours I am sure I would have been begging for drugs!

i have a low pain tolerance, so i had had an epidural with both my kids & everything went amazingly. its nice to actually enjoy your labor and birth, i dont think i could had watched them coming out as i was pushing while screaming my head off, lol. i was also induced with my second child & had my water broken due to issues with my placenta. i was terrified because of all the horror stories i had heard about being induced with pitocin, but that labor actually was LESS painful than going into labor naturally.

I guess before this thread gets locked I should actually respond!

With my daughter I went into labour after christmas dinner! (must have been the turkey) I was 5 days late. I had always planned on having a intervention free, drug free labour. With-in one hour of contractions starting (midnight) they were 2 minuites apart, lasting one minuite. It was pretty intense! Got to the hospital and admitted at 1:30. (4cm). Laboured in the bath, on birthball, bent over bed. My partner, doula, and mom all working at massaging me and keeping me sane. By 3 my contractions were ontop of eachother and I was not getting breaks. At 5 am they were still on top of eachother and I was 8cm. Transitioning, but baby was posterior! My doula helped me turn the baby while on all fours. worst thing ever is not being able to push -- as you all might know! 7:30 was aloud to push despite being 9.5 cm. 7:45 my water broke while pushing. 8:15 things were slow so decided to squat and push. LOL well thank god for gravity! 8:19 my beautiful Laura Olivia was born!

All natural! Even with contractions ontop of eachother for 5 hours straight!
