No you may not go into labor. People can be as many as 4 cm for a week or longer. Stripping you membranes will help speed things along though.

I dont know what 'strip my membrane' is, but with my 3rd child, I was 3cm dilated on Monday and gave birth Friday afternoon. Hope this help and good luck!

they never stripped my membranes...the doctor ended up having me induced because my blood pressure was way too high...I had my son 5 days early. He is 13 months now and we are due with number 2 around December 8th...hopefully everything will take a natural course this time and I won't have to be induced...good luck

When I saw my ob when I was 39 weeks I was already 2cm and she striped my membranes (if it is going to work it will work in 24 to 48 hours my ob told me). 3 days later my water broke and then the 4th day I went to the hospital and I was 5 cm. If the strep swab comes back positive make sure you go once your water breaks!!!

i was dialated 4 cent . for a month and a half and i still had to have my water broken but that was my first pregnancy

[deleted account]

no one really knows... even the doctor can only guess at this point. You can be dilated for weeks before actually going into labor. Stripping the membranes won't neccessarily do anything either my sis-in-law had hers stripped and ended up with a scheduled c-section 3 weeks later (c-section because twins) I wasn't dilated at all day before my son was born but the next afternoon my water broke you just never know. good luck

You can be dilated to one for weeks. I was for about five and then I went in one day and was four and in labor. My ob stripped my membranes, it hurts a little, but its bearable and it just causes some spotting and is supposed to hurry up the labor process. Although it didn't really with mine because about 12 hours later my little girl was born!

My doctor stripped my membranes after I lost my mucas plug, and I went into labor the next day. It helps release those labor hormones. Besides you could be one cent dialated about a month before you have your child. But it is exciting!

I heard once that you can be dialated at one or two your entire pregnancy if it isn't your first.

especially with your second or + baby , you can be dialated to 1 or 2 for a few weeks. and it doesnt always mean impending labor

I spent over a week dialated at 3 and didn't make any real progress until I reached four and had my water broke. Stripping membranes didn't work for me. What did work was spicy food, lots of walking, sex, and fifteen minutes in a really hot bath (this was a suggestion by a nurse in the birthing center). If you do take a bath, don't spend more than fifteen minutes in there.

Ashley - im 35 weeks and 3 days. they want to strip them to help induce labour without all the use of drugs. i have a c-section schedualed however i want to try for a v-bac. but we have that schedualed just to be safe because i had an emergency c-section with my son. Some days i think that she will come early and some days shes just chilling out. i dont get her LOL shes awesome though i love her

With my first daughter I was 4-5cm dilated and at least 50% effaced for the last few weeks just walking around. I ended up having to be induced at 40 weeks 5 days. With my second daughter I was hardly 1cm and maybe 50% effaced at almost 39 weeks. I thought id never go into labor on my own with her, either. I ended up having what i thought was false labor all day at work and then my water broke on it's own at 39 weeks. Each pregnancy is different and your baby will come when she is ready! Good luck!

i want 3 cm & 75% effaced my entire last month...so being dilated doesn't necessarily mean u will go soon. It really just means ur body is getting ready for delivery...i did not have my membranes stripped with my daughter so i don't know about that part. How far along r u? Do u know y they want to strip ur membranes?

When I went for my weekly check up at about 39 weeks, I was 2cm dilated and he swept my membranes. Almost instantly I started having pains, and they kept getting worse. 3 hours later, I was in the hospital in active labor! It is different for everyone, you could be 1cm dilated for weeks or you could go tomorrow, just depends on when your little baby decides to come out! Good luck! :)

I went on for 6 weeks with the cervix 1cm dilated when I was expecting my twin daughters and 1 week at 3cm so I don't think it means anything.

i am hoping to have a natural birth if i get pregnant again. my first pregnancy was a nightmare and ended in a emergency c-section a month early. good luck to you and best wishes, i hope the stripping does help.

You can be 1 cm dialated for a long time and have nothing happen, but my ob told me that usually if they do a good job of stripping your membranes you will usually go into labor within 48 hours, and that is how it happened with me with my last one.

I was dilated at 3cms for 5 weeks!! I went through pre-labor and a ton of false labor contractions and 3 days before the doctor was gonna strip my membranes i went into full labor and delivered my daughter. I technically had contractions for 3 full days that were consistent and timeable and on the 4th day is when i had my daughter and they were 2 mins apart when i finally decided to go into the hospital!! My daughter came when I had finally stopped trying to have her early! Good luck :)

With my second child I was 1 cm since 29 weeks, I didn't go into labor until 39 weeks.....I have seen woman 3-4 cms and was like that for 2-3 weeks....so it all depends on the baby there is no expected time for a baby to come. They come when they want too LOL

I think it best not to rush things if you don't have to. As most of you have said being dilated at this point in the game , doesn't mean that now or a week from now is best. I went into labour the day I was due and I would have much perfered the nurse have waited till I was further dilated before she broke my water. Before she did that my contractions were a breeze I was walking around with them 3 minutes apart and all it felt like was someone really pressing on my belly. I have the feeling that I could have happily went to 6 cm without interference, but they broke my water at 3cm, because the caught Jacob right at his transition point. His heart rate had slowed to lessen the stress of birth and in so doing, scared the nurse into thinking he had a prolapsed cord. No such drama befell us :)

Not to discourage you but sometimes being dilated isn't the best indication of how soon labor will come. Stripping your membranes should help the whole situation move along more quickly. But it still might be a waiting game. Good luck, your baby will be here before you know it!

[deleted account]

it doesnt mean anything. Just that you are dialated 1 cm. Stripping your cervix should help you to dialate more but it might not. I was 1 cm for 3 weeks before I actually went into labor. and event then I had to be induced. Every woman is different, ever pregnancy is different, every baby is different. No two women have exactly the same experience when it comes to child birth. Just be ready to have a baby and be ready to wait. Could come tomorrow, could come in a few weeks! Good luck. I know the last few weeks are the longest waiting for that little one to come.

It doesn't necessarily mean you will go into labor soon. When I got my strep swab with my daughter I was 36w and at 1cm. She was born at 41w 6d. A week before I delivered, I was still at 1cm and 2 days before I was at 2cm. It all just depends on your baby. Stripping your membranes will get things going (everybody I know that got it went into labor with in 2 days) so if you don't go into labor before that, you will go not too soon after getting stripped. I went into labor naturally with my daughter and ended up with an emergency c-section so my doctor also plans on stripping my membranes. I hope everything goes good for you. Good luck!

i found the stripping of my membrane really got things going. it was nice. except how much the contractions hurt. only problem was is that i had to have an emergency c-section. i want to try and avoid that with my daughter but have one schedualed just to be safe. maybe i will get lucky and go into labour when i have my membrane stripped on possibly the 25th as that will put me at 37 weeks who knows!

I was 1cm dilated from 36-40 1/2 weeks... although you're a bit dilated it doesn't mean your going to go into labor right away. i'm not sure about the whole membrane thing... because I didnt have that done

You can be 1cm dialetd and never go into labor. Stipping your membranes is a great way to get the labor going. It worksoften. As for me with both my kids they set me to be induced and luckly the both came the day before. I hear induction makes the contractions harder. With my second I was 1 cm dialted for about 2 weeks. My dr. set me to be induced on a Monday evening and early Sunday morning I went to the hospital having slight irregular contractions. Found out I was already 7 cm dialated! What a surprise it was. Good Luck!

With my first pregnancy i had my twins at 33 weeks 6 days. Everything happened all at once, and they were born six weeks early on June 8th, 2008.

With my last pregnancy I had my son at 38 weeks 6 days. At my last dr apt I wasn't dialated at all, and had my scheduled c-section set for July 13th. I woke up in the middle of the night on July 12th at 1 am. By the time I got to the hospital ( we had to find someone to watch the twins) and they checked me at 3 am I was already 4 cm dialated. I had my son at 6:25 that morning.

My son tried coming early! I was dilated to a 2 and 60% effaced at 32 weeks and stayed at 2cm for the next 5wks but at every visit I continued to thin out. Because I wasn't expected to last until 40 weeks and my husband was leaving town for a month I managed to convince my doctor to strip my membranes on a Thursday and I went into labor the following Monday and I had my son Tuesday morning. He was ready though, my water broke about 10 minutes after I got to the hospital right as I was trying to give them a urine sample...that was fun. Good luck!

Just because you're a centimeter dialated doesn't mean anything I was 1 to 2 centimeters with my first daughter for about three weeks before I went into labor with her. It just means the baby is getting ready but when who knows. If they do strip your membrane you will feel a little pressure and you will see a bloody show. Even that doesn't mean you will go into labor right away. With my second daughter they did that on thursday and she was born on Saturday night. Good Luck!

with my first son they stripped my membranes twice during the last couple weeks and he was still 8 days overdue and with my second son they didnt strip the membrane but I was 3cm for almost 4 weeks!! and he was 8 days overdue. lol. have you lost your mucous plug? I think babies tend to come within a week after that happens, but I'm sure you've heard that every pregnancy, labor, and delivery are different. lol. Good Luck!!

no mention of how effaced i was. she didnt strip the membrane but knowing my luck my darling daughter might try and show up early LOL! i go back and see her again on the 18th so i can find out for sure then. let her know that i suspect that i may go. i also feel as if my baby has dropped so that makes me ponder as well.

thank you for all the well wishes but please i love reading about what you think. it does help!

Not always with my 3rd I was dialated to 2 at 33 weeks and my son came one day before his due date. Did he say how effaced you were. I think that a better tell tell sign of oncoming labor if the cervix and started to soften and thin out you could sooner than later.

I went in for my 38 week visit and the dr. stripped my membranes, doesn't really hurt that bad, and was 1 centimeter dilated... I had braxton hicks contraction for the last trimester..... When I was 41 weeks and three days the dr. finally induced me...

[deleted account]

I walked around for the last four weeks at 2 cm dilated and 80% effaced. My daughter didn't come until her due date. Like Shannon said it's different for everyone. Try not to worry about it and relax before your new baby comes :)

[deleted account]

i had my 36 week OB checkup on a friday and i was 2 cm dilated, but she told me not to worry, that it didnt mean i would go into labour early. a week and a half later (on a wednesday) i went into labour, and i was 3 cm when i got to the hospital, and they gave me a shot of morphine and were going to send me home but i asked them to check me again and the nurse did and i was 8 cm (not even 5 mins later), and my water broke all over the nurses hand! i delivered my daughter half an hour later...
my sister-in-law had her 39 week checkup the same day i had mine (on a friday) and she was 1 cm dilated. the OB stripped her membrane and she ended up going into labour that sunday night and delivering her daughter monday morning.

so i guess you never know... but good luck with the delivery and new baby! :)
