My son loves his stuffed monkey. He is very aware and big for his age but I'm not sure how to tell if he's ready? or just wait until he tells me he wants to sleep with it?

I think it depends on how your child sleep and how well they roll over just like Jenni said. I know they say sleep with nothing but my daughter got her monkey (long skinny arms and legs with a 5 inch body) at 6 months and wouldnt sleep without it, my other daughter got a blankie (Afghan about 10 x10) at about 6 months and my son got his bear blanket (Same type as Jenni was talking about) and hasnt let go of it since he was born. now my oldest (4) sleeps with about a doz. stuffed animals which drives me nuts but cuddles only her monkey, my other daughter (2) sleeps with blankie and nigh night doggy. My son (9 months) sleeps with his bear blanket.

How old is he? How mobile is he?
If you do let him sleep with it you have to be sure there is nothing he can rip off and choke on. Like detachable eyes, buttons, bows, ribbon, google eyes, beads etc.
I prefer using animal blankies. They're about 10 inch square blankets with an animal head attatched. They're specifically made for infants and have sewn eyes and noses. Nothing they can choke on. They're small enough that smothering is not a risk.
Both of my children are attatched to them. My 3 year old still doesn't sleep without his! He strokes the silk lining around the edges while he drifts off to sleep. My 16 month old will take substitutes on the other hand (she has a few of these) but her favourite is her pink hippo one.
They're really a godsend and have made sleep time easy for my kids.
